The fact that Merik was only in one chapter of this book is a literal crime

I took notes! So there are the Exalted Ones and the Old Ones (also called the Six) and they are all paladins. The exalted ones can possess people once their well gets repaired, except for Portia who just found a way to possess people (such as Corlant) for centuries. Kahina, Stix, Kullen, Owl, and Leopold are all modern reincarnation of the Six. Hope this helps!

My understanding was that the Exalted Ones and the Old Ones are the same people, “old ones” because their souls were stopped from reincarnated so they haven’t been around for a long time.

Everytime the cast mentioned Merik I was surprised at how quick his presence was forgotten. Confused, even, at how a main character (kinda) was swept aside pretty easily. So at the end when he awoke I squeaked my lungs empty! This book really missed his presence. And I agree. WITCHSHADOW WAS SO CONFUSING. But I think it's also good that we don't know who is on which side, and who betrayed who. And who loved and now loves who. Even at the end, we don't know if the Rook King really betrayed them or not. Kinda nice to finally discover in the last book.

I read Sightwitch right before Witchshadow and I was not confused much, I think re-reading it will help. 💜 loved your review!

Just like you I'm worried about how everything can be wrapped up in one book. It feels like we might need an entire book to explain what is going on with the Paladins and the Exalted Ones. And there is still a war going on between the Empires. And not all the wells have been restored I think? This book answered some questions but also introduced new ones. It feels like too much ground to cover in one book so I fear the end will be rushed 😅 Personally I had reread Sightwitch before this, hoping it would help me clarify stuffs about the Paladins/Exalted Ones. I think it brings some information but I'm mostly still confused. I hope the confusion is intended because otherwise I think I'm going to need to make a chart. That being said I still really love the book. The lesbian love triangle was amazing. Everything between Iseult and possessed Aeduan really worked for me. I'm disapointed that Safy and Iseult were separated AGAIN but I lovedd both of their storylines a lot so I'll shut up and hope they get to spend the last book side by side. Basically I'm just hoping the ending works out alright because this is my favorite YA serie and I love how complex it is. I would hate for the serie to finish on a disapointment because one too many storyline was introduced 😅

I still wonder if I missed a book in this series! I don’t think I’ve ever felt so strongly like this.

I really wish we'd had two books, I think she did an AMAZING job combining the two into one, but would've loved to see Safi and Iseult together for one book, bc I agree there was such a build up to their reunion at the end of Bloodwitch to them then being separated immediately. I love the ambiguity of the Paladins and Exalted Ones stuff, I have no idea who to trust, but am also very very very confused as to who is who, I feel like I need to reread and make notes 😅 I'm so excited for the last book now, it's all (hopefully) going to all become clear. What did you think of the whole 'Safi is the well-chosen ruler of Cartorra' plot twist thing?

Yes, i think we're meant to be confused about who's good and who's bad. And i had to make a chart for who is who. I still loved it though

Everything you said 💯. I was so confused at times but I definitely enjoyed and was able to follow along with basic understanding. I wished we had gotten all these names and who they were possessing earlier in the series instead of the penultimate book.

I also walked away from this one kind of confused which I hope will get better on re-read as well. I also hate that we didn't get much of Aeduan as himself because I missed his interactions with Iseult. I also wanted more of Isuelt and Safi together to I like your idea of it being 2 books instead.

I think that we will come to know and understand who is an exalted one and who is an old one. The old tale about the paladins has a few different iterations. I feel that the gaps will fill in with the last book. Also I would def go back and re read sightwitch now and it might make more sense

I thought the exalted ones and the old ones are all paladins 🤔 but one group went bad and the others are the good ones? 😅 And yes, I'm also still confused lol

Omgg I'm glad I wasn't the only one lost about the paladins I'm hoping the confusion is intentional tho 😭😭

I feel like with Susan's books because they're so worldbuilding heavy & dense, a reread of the last book helps you prepare for the upcoming book I think if I had reread Bloodwitch, I would have better understand Witchshadow. That and I also need a printed copy of the book to help follow along with the audiobook because there is so many characters and plots that seemed to fly out of my head

I really enjoyed it but I did feel like I had to take copious notes to keep track of all the Paladins and who 'matched up' with the current timeline characters. And I did die during that moment between Aeduan and Iseult right at the end but I wanted MORE OF IT. GIVE ME THE KISSES.

Love this discussion! I’ve got two questions/thoughts. I am super confused how Owl got rid off her hell-bard collar and was kind of disappointed how she was separated from Iseult. Also, is Iseult possibly a “re-incarnation” of Sirmayana or the Moon mother?

I just finished this book. I admit it wasn’t my favorite in the series. I was just so CONFUSED. Probably going to do a reread in the future and hopefully it will make more sense.

I reread Bloodwitch and Sightwitch before this one and I was confused! I will reread Witchshadow soon since I read it quickly cause I was so exited. This was a 4 stars for me, where the previous books were 5 stars. I wish this was two books as Susan intended from the beginning. Or at least twice as long, since it was not very long. It would have been so much better. I am really dissapointed. Still love the story though.

Okay, so Sooz said on Instagram in a live that the whole series is written all confusing because she is distracting us with the story buy going to cut the purse with the conclusion. I have tons of notes and what not if you want to collaborate on theories. Lol.

I reread the entire series before reading this and was confused. Honestly this book disappointed me a little. Kinda convoluted and all over the place. And the lack of Merik I can't get over. Ha!
