Imagine Thomas playing one of these lullaby versions live, then out of the blue, the tempo rises, the volume doubles, and the rest of the band appears from the darkness behind him just in time to play the chorus. That would make a sweet scene at a live show.

The first time I saw this I thought the shadow with the red particle's was the dead girl, but after a few watches I've realized that it was the photographer. He was haunted by the image of the dead girl, and the inevitability of his own death. He's sick. He doesn't have long. One day he doubles over outside his regular diner, his life flashes before his eyes. He stands at deaths door. But it's not his time. His eyes open and he starts stumbles forward, but his friend catches him before he's hit by the car. They go back to coffee like nothing happened. I fucking love this video

The fat guy with the 'stache was his war buddy. The way I see it, the fact that the main character was yanked out of traffic by his friend from the war served as a reminder that he's not alone. I saw a metaphor in that scene to the song's opening lines - war buddy was certainly there in time.
@Sergei_Ivanovich_Mosin5 жыл бұрын
I just realized something. The photographer bought the camera after coming home from the war, everything up until that point showed a broken man until that moment when he first saw the camera in the shop and just used it to take simple picture, it was something that brought him out of the war and back to enjoying life; yet sometime down the road he became a crime scene photographer, the hobby that took his mind off his days of violence just brought him right back to it.
@Scam_Likely.4 жыл бұрын
And he stepped into traffic to kill himself but his buddy he served with pulled him to safety and was there to talk with him all night at the cafe to make sure he was safe. So much in this video, the premise would make an incredible movie. The importance of friends and community to our mental health, the importance of love and support. This video makes me cry every time
@Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat4 жыл бұрын
@@Scam_Likely. i don't really see war here. I see a girl who died, possibly from a car crash or something, and a photographer who witnessed it, possibly accidentally. I'm not even really sure he witnessed it, it could be that the girl was photographed and then appeared in a newspaper headline or something. Either way, the man clearly doesn't take the reminder of his own mortality well and has a panic attack, eventually finding his way into the street. To me, the art implies that he didn't really intend on going into the street, he just had a panic attack and wasn't paying much attention to his surroundings. Fortunately, a friend or acquaintance of some kind saves him from getting run over. I don't see the photographer as being ill or suffering PTSD from a war or anything, just not able to come to terms with the memento mori of the girl's death. As for the people with fingers extended out around their ears? I'm not entirely sure. Maybe a look at how he envisions the afterlife or people who have accepted death or crowds who aren't listening to him. I don't see a clear answer but they don't appear like soldiers or like ill people or hospital workers or anything, so I don't think they point to war or disease any more than anything else.

@@Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat Did you miss the whole sequence at 4:04 that clearly shows him and his friend as soldiers during what looks like WWI and him return home injured, sitting in bed with a cigarette and several bottle on the table next to him? PTSD is obviously a big thing here.

I don’t know where the sun goes every night, every night Or where the moon goes when it’s light, when it’s light I don’t mind, as long as it’s there in time Oh as long as they’re there in time I won't mind, I won't mind, I won't mind No one knows where the soul goes when we die, when we die Some say to nowhere some will say the sky, to the sky It’s all the same, and surely some will find it strange But I prefer the mystery remains Unexplained, unexplained, unexplained [Chorus] Oh my God I will hold my tongue and I’ll breathe Easily If anyone can say with any sort of certainty That there is something to believe Did you ever think that we’d be three steps from the ledge? Contemplating awful things and thinking about the end Nobody mentioned that the pieces wouldn’t fit You could rearrange them all you want but the puzzle it was rigged We swore we’d never stray Right before we went our separate ways And now we’re looking back, we’re second guessing all the choices that we made And I don't care if the ship sinks, and we drown, we can drown Or if the plane crashes straight into the ground, to the ground As long as I Had a chance to close my eyes Had a moment to realize That it was time, it was time, it was time [Chorus] Oh my God I will hold my tongue and I’ll breathe, easily If anyone can say with any sort of certainty that there is something to believe Did you ever think that we’d be three steps from the ledge? Contemplating awful things and thinking about the end Nobody mentioned that the pieces wouldn’t fit You could rearrange them all you want but the puzzle it was rigged We swore we’d never stray Right before we went our separate ways And now we’re looking back, we’re second guessing all the choices that we made Who would’ve thought, we’d fought so long, we started to see Our enemies turned into friends, our friends to enemies and we sat somewhere in the between But I heard someone say they knew that someday that everything would fall into its place And everything would be fine And I really truly honestly without a doubt want to believe that everything will be alright [Chorus] Oh my God I will, hold my tongue and I’ll breathe easily If anyone can say with any sort of certainty that there is something to believe Did you ever think that we’d be three steps from the ledge? Contemplating awful things and thinking about the end Nobody mentioned that the pieces wouldn’t fit You could rearrange them all you want but the puzzle it was rigged We swore we’d never stray Right before we went our separate ways And now we’re looking back, we’re second guessing all the choices that we made

I used to (and still sometimes) get nightly panic attacks and terrors over thinking of death and mortality. It shakes me so badly I sit up in a horrified sweat.. But this song has helped soothe them lately. The idea that lots of real, honest, thinking and feeling people before me believed in something, who’s to say they can’t be right. I don’t know what comes next, and it scares me to my core, but many others walk calmly with me. With that, I might just find the strength to go on.
