Greetings Mark, just finally catching up! Another excellent ....and humorous interview...thanks so much for the effort, that we may be there as well! I had no idea that many had their hands involved into making a meerschaum pipe...a new perspective. A few great looking pipes in the bunch...and I'm with you...prefer the classical shapes. Thanks for sharing this...take care my friend....we'll talk soon! Corey

The artisan pipe market has always been tough mainly because those guys that sell "artisan" pipes have to charge a retail price that usually will only encompass about 5 per cent of the available pipe smoking buyers. There was a study done recently that still holds true which is that about 75 percent of pipe smokers will not spend over about 25 dollars for a pipe, another10 percent will spend between 25 and 50 dollars, another 10 percent will be willing to spend 50 to about 90 dollars and that leaves a possible market for anything over 90 dollars to only about 5 percent of available clientele. I can tell you from personal experience in the business often time a customer will bring in a pipe collection that has been left behind after the pipe smoker has died, the vast majority of the pipes in those accumulations are very low end pipes, often there will be one or two pipes in a batch of 40 estate pipes which are high grade and those invariably were bought as a gift to the pipe smoker on a special occasion like a birthday or Christmas. Ironically because the recipient was so accustomed to buying and smoking inexpensive pipes the high grades in the group rarely show signs of having been smoked regularly. Such is the world of pipe retail. We cater to tiny nitch in an already tiny market.

First of all I'd like to thank you for taking the precious time to making this absolutely wonderful content. As a fan of history and the pipe hobby I would have to say your channel is the perfect blending of both of those things. My wife, son, and I have been under the weather and isolated in our house for many days now and I have dedicated much of my YTPC video consumption to taking in your entertaining and educational content. This channel has quickly become one of my absolute favorites and I am very much looking forward to the next ones to come. I know that finding time to make this content is not easy and for your efforts I would just like to say thank you. The other night I had fallen asleep watching one of your videos and I had a dream that you and I were in a clearing in the woods and we were having a struggle for possession of a tall bar stool. I don't really try to find meaning in my crazy dreams but I found this one in particular to be very humorous. Just thought I'd pass that along to you. Anyway, sorry for the long winded message. You are appreciated here in South Dakota USA. Cheers!

It has got to be tricky to manage all those individual personalities, all of whom are working on just one feature of the finished piece. There is an old American saying that "too many cooks spoil the broth" so congrats on Black Meerschaum who turn out outstanding pipes while juggling all those personalities.

I've got to say, I've been looking to add to my meerschaum collection for a while. I have a few, but nothing completely smooth, so I pulled the trigger and bought one of these pretty much right after seeing this video. It arrived 2 days ago and, good Lord, it's amazing! The quality is more than what I expected, and the service has been excellent! These pipes really are made for smoking. Oh, and the case that it comes with - thick leather with more than enough space to carry two pipes if you wish. It also has a pocket that would carry a pouch of tobacco and another that holds a lighter and pipe tool comfortably. One more thing: Two smokes in and there's colour showing up on the shank already. I'd definitely recommend them and want to thank Mark for bringing Blackmeerchaum to my attention.

Mark, a pipe question if you please - I’m a fairly new pipe smoker and subscriber - At what point do you spill out the burnt ash from the pipe? I haven’t heard anyone on any forum discuss this. I notice when I’m half way down my smoke starts to taste ashy - I tamp it down usually, but shouldn’t I be spilling out the burnt ash? I’ve never seen anyone actually do this … do you? Perhaps a neophyte question, but there it is …. Thanks you are a great teacher.
@bremenpipesmoker65712 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and kind words, my friend! Much appreciated! Well... you should use the tamper, if the bowl starts getting to hot or toregulate the draft... the ashes stays in the bowl... it won't affect the taste... these harsh notes normally indicate, that you're going too hot on tobacco... just take your time, regulate the draft with the tamper and relight carefully if necessary... Hope, that may be of some help.... Take care and be well! Mark
@ssnoc2 жыл бұрын
@@bremenpipesmoker6571 - Thank you for your advice - do you sell your tampers? If not, you should they are beautiful, especially the black ones. Maybe you can discuss nicotine content in different tobacco’s - for example, does Latakia have a higher nicotine content than Virginia? I’m a Latakia smoker …. Cheers 🍻

I love your videos! I've been watching them for a while. I love that you're a historian and a pipe smoker. I can't help but notice that you only seem to wear black clothes and are often surrounded by gargoyles and the like. I'd describe your aesthetic as gothic academic--gothademic, if you will. Do you identify as gothic or identify with the subculture? Is that something you aim for? I tend to wear mostly black and tend to have a kind of gothic business casual look at work: e.g., black jeans, black dress shirt, neon green and black tie, etc.

Great vid! Istanbul is great for tobacco shops. Loads of different rolling tobaccos and cigars. A few pipes around. Didnt see many pipe tobaccos. Just in the airport. Bubble pipe (sheesha/hookah) tobaccos yes. Noto bene: The Turkish chose the USD as a strong currency to hold during their currency crisis BTW. Now everyone there thinks the USD is strong. It's going to crash ofcourse. Invest in EUR or GBP.
