I went to CDs over 40 ago, and I never looked back. I absolutely refuse to pay the high prices for vinyl. It's just plain ridiculous. Not only that, it's what you get for what you pay.
@chrislj2890Ай бұрын
Back in the '60s I paid .30¢ for a gallon of gas, .35¢ for a pack of cigs, .50¢ for a Playboy, .50¢ for a 45rpm record, etc. In the early '70s I was buying LPs for $3.50. Those were back in the days when the U.S. and Europe had massive record plants pouring out millions of records which kept the costs way down. Those days and that industry are gone, and now we pretty much have boutique record pressing companies. Today many of the old recordings have been remastered from the original master tapes and sound much better than the originals ever did, no matter what many purists claim. Now I don't go for the UHQR boxed version that sell for $150, but asking $30 or even $40 isn't extreme when you take inflation into consideration and the manufacturing circumstances. I use to belong to the record clubs like Columbia, RCA, BMG and Musical Heritage Society and accumulated a lot of vinyl and CDs for decent prices, but that is another thing we don't have anymore. Collecting records can either be expensive or fairly economical depending on how you go about it. I also have streaming and in cases where the physical media isn't available I record onto cassettes, as that's another option. I wish I could buy a new car for $3,000 like in the '60s instead of $30,000 on up in today's market, but that ain't happening either.

When you can pick up a new CD from a name artist for less than 15 bucks with the exact same album on vinyl costing over 50, that's getting well into rip-off territory. Grew up with vinyl and still have a few LP's from the old days but no turntable or any of the vinyl paraphernalia anymore. Very happy with CD's.

I agree with you about vinyl, way too expensive! I buy and sell mainly CDs in my eBay store and have a personal collection of about 500 vinyl and 4600+ CDs. I've been done buying vinyl for years. RSD is just an outrageous cash grab by the record labels on top of the already insane prices. I think CDs are the best medium.
@erikmolnar658513 күн бұрын
Yeah, I quit buying records a year or two ago. Prices are stupid and stores dont carry the groups I like. The local owned shops have better laserdisc selections. When they do have something good, its usually some high priced collectable. The bins are filled with what use to be bottom shelf dollar records 30 years ago.
@joelbrandenburg6746Ай бұрын
The way this works is supply vs demand. 10+ years ago there was a lot of supply and not very much demand, thus if you were selling records you were pricing them low. Today, there is more demand and that is why prices are rising. Not to mention the general inflation in this country. It's all cyclical. When you were going into a record store and CDs were costing $20+ dollars, the vinyl prices were super low because no one was buying them. Now it's swapped around. It's much easier to buy a new record player than it is to buy a CD player too.
@rudyondutyАй бұрын
I totally understand why it’s happening. I’m saying is it doesn’t make sense to buy in a market where the demand is so high. It won’t always be and when the demand fades like it always does… that’s where I’m a buyer again. Thanks for the comment! God Bless! 😊🙏

You can add my voice to yours. I have close to 4,000 LPs collected over 55 years. Many were collected at garage sales in the late 80's, 90's and first decade of 2000's. I won't even say what I paid but it was obscene (low). I'm down to about 8 LPs a year now, mostly filling in gaps for bands I love. Yes, I bid on and won a Mobile Fidelity Pressing of "Eat a Peach" by the Allman Brothers Band for $68 and it wasn't even from a record dealer. He said it was MINT and it was. On the other side of the coin, I paid way too much for "Pinkerton" by Weezer, also Mobile Fidelity (it was out of print when I bought it) and then, MoFi goes and rereleases it. I didn't think they did that. "Won't Get Fooled Again"! (On a positive note, I've read they have once again deleted it so if I wait long enough, it will go back up in value LOL).

I agree, new vinyl prices are high. Years ago I shelved all my 200+ vinyl albums and only bought CDs. Now I have about 800or so CDs. About 2 years ago I bought a copy DBPowerAmp and ripped all my CDs to FLAC. I replaced my Marantz CD-63 Mk II with an Eversolo DMP-A6 and all my CD music sits in a memory drive inside the Eversolo. So convenient! That said, during COVID, had plenty of time and found several boxes full of my old vinyl albums. Some from the 60’s which belonged to my dad! Amazingly my Technics SL-3300 turntable with a Shure V15 type II cartridge still works perfectly! I’m 71 and retired. I bought a Groove Washer cleaning kit and have been enjoying cleaning the albums. A slow process but I am enjoying myself getting the albums cleaned. I am pleased with how well the G2 & G3 cleaners work. Regarding high prices, I recently visited a record store. Must have been 20+ years since I visited one. Discovered Josey Records in Dallas and was surprised to find hundreds of albums at $2. Bought sone old Mantovani, Percy Faith, Ferrante & Teicher, and a few more for less than $20, very pleased. Incredibly, they are VG+ and with a little cleaning sound very nice. Only very few albums I’ve found where I can clearly prefer the vinyl version. Prime example is CSNY Deja Vu. I find the original 70’s pressing easily beats the new remastered digital version. Overall, I still prefer the pristine sound of a good digital source. But have to admit, having my turntable working and being able to play a vinyl record when nostalgia calls, priceless!

I've bought more than my share of overpriced vinyl so I suppose I've been part of the problem. But I'm backing off a lot now. I envision a time when the prices will crash, the current situation is not sustainable. A lot of people who bought as an "investment" are likely in for a rude awakening. I was bidding on a rare record and bid an amount that I thought had a reasonable chance of winning, the record ended up selling for 10X what I bid. Crazy.

it doesn't make sense for a vinyl to cost more than a CD in 2024, in terms of sound quality many of the new vinyls sound worse, but enthusiasts care about vinyl for many reasons, I personally don't get it, but just like people who prefer vintage cars, they don't drive better but people love them for whatever reason.

With vinyl, it’s best to prioritize quality over quantity. Impulse purchases will quickly empty your wallet and you’ll have a shelf full of records you don’t listen to. It’s better to have 100 albums you love than 1000 albums you don’t care about. After 40 years of collecting I could stand to thin out my collection. If I could boil it down to 500 favorites, I think that would be ideal. Maybe someday! Regarding shipping, I don’t mind paying for shipping as long as the total purchase price is right. If I stuck to “free shipping” listings only, I would have missed out on many good buys. Besides, most sellers with free shipping have just rolled the shipping price into their asking price. So you’re not really getting it shipped for free.

Unless you collect some very old vinyl from the early 80's and before, and you can not find a remastered digital release in digital format, it is completely pointless to buy new vinyl with music from the 90's and later because all the master recordings were made digitally. Converting an original digital recording to analog vinyl you just introduce less dynamic range, noise, clicks and pops and wow & flutter. It's totally pointless.

It’s not so much the younger generation (I’m 47), if u watch KZbinrs who are around our age every week they are buying 5-10 of the latest releases and u start to feel that these are the people who are buying records just to buy and have on a shelf. They go hunting and stuff and again they buy just to buy. That has an impact on the market. That and the newer releases come at 2 records and a heavier vinyl and that sets a higher price. I’ve always been on the mindset of I’m not gonna buy it unless I’m really gonna enjoy it.

That bundle of records I bought for $50 was an auction with free shipping. The reality is if I saw a smoking deal on vinyl or anything for that matter and somebody was charging me shipping that was reasonable of course I would buy it. But that’s very rare. Best I could tell is 99% of the time I don’t pay shipping. and the times that I do on eBay, I’ll submit an offer that absorbs the price of shipping. So in theory I didn’t pay it. What can I say?
