Imo gi to no gi standing the biggest difference is how fast someone can get in on your legs, you almost have to anticipate shots instead of reacting. Ground between gi and no gi is very very different, the multitude of open guards is way pared down, basically butterfly and some deep leg entanglement are still viable but things like Lasso, spider, de la riva and others are either impossible or only useful transitionally

Well, you can always grab/clawing the opponent/assailant skin, especially on flabby person who have extra skin and perhaps grab/clawing some biceps muscles too. Ears and hair can also be pulled down. it deals more damage to incapacitate the opponent...in self-defense perspective of course.

Excatly the only difference is just the grips that's all, no gi is alot easier to pull of throws and setups especially in street altercations
@guest0046

While the kuzushi is a little modified and the tsukuri and kake is more or less the same in gi and no gi the whole dynamic is different. You were standing very upright as if you were doing judo. This is not very good when you fight against a wrestler who will easily shoot in on you. You can afford to stand more up right cause you can stuff the shots with your grip on the gi more easily. The setups from outside range to inside range is very much totally different. Also the stances you need to have. I would say its a bigger difference with takedowns from gi and nogi standup grappling than it is from kickboxing to thai boxing. When you are clinched up, its more or less the same, but the whole game before that is very different and you will lose almost every time if you dont adjust. Its more like BJJ sports vs BJJ with strikes, like MMA

@yohannschroo5644
@yohannschroo5644 6 ай бұрын

As an aikidoka, when practicing without a gi, tshirts frequently ripped and people got really slippery with sweat quickly. Perfectly doable, but solid grips required more joint locks where the hold fit into the bones rather than the looser holds that are safer for a hypermobile person like me. My dojo let people train in exercise clothes if needed, so I have trained with people not in a gi.

Obviously a wreslter gonna have an advantage in No Gi scenarios, because they train for that!! But you see, as a Brazilian Judoka I've had the opportunity to travel to a few countries in Asia and Europe (especially the East), and that was my first contact with Wrestling; in Brazil wrestling is a homosexual sport LOL so you don't find a gym to learn. But the thing is, even though they also attack the legs, they can and in fact do much more than that, and not only that they also appreciate the sharing between grappling disciplines (especially in ex-soviet republics). Whilst in the US I was caught off guard when I got on the mat, everyone in such a low stance that it actually got me thinking if they were trying to kiss their knees. Well, to my not so much surprise, due to the stance, I was only attacked by sequences of low movements, which worked great; until it didn't. Low attacks are great, but in my honest opnion americans, brazilians and westerners in general are relying too much on them to the point that it gets predictable. I cannot complain, I've perfected my leg attacks in America; thanks I guess. Another thing, from my limited experience in american wreslting, I haven't saw people drilling throws with so much intent as they do they single, high c, double, ankle pick drills... Is that the norm?? Is the reason related to Folkstyle rules??

principles may be the same but application are very different, the wrist grip to pull as if it were the sleeve rarely works beyond beginners, most wrestlers I've seen/spar push the opponent to get a foward reaction to make an arm/hip throw (as we do in judo but they are more subtle) and rely more on the "tsurite" hand to make up for not having any fabric to pull from, and fully wrap the "hikite" arm to make up for the slippery of having no gi
@irsh2786
@irsh2786 6 ай бұрын
It's not compulsory to catch and keep the wrist. If you have one underhook then you can work to get a bodylock and then from here you are free to do one uchi mata or else, by example. No Gi Judo can be done at high level, especially foot sweeps and some hip techniques. We saw that several times in MMA as well.

Depends what you are trying to prove. if it's that Judo works No Gi it can, if it's that Judo + wrestling is better than just wrestling it has for some athletes... It's Sambo. The biggest thing you have to remember though is MMA to most people you mean UFC which is not the same thing. UFC is an American production and has no end of highly skilled athletes ending their 10 year run of academia training with nowhere to go with their wrestling. Opposed to Judo which has much better adult participation and barely exists in America at the same level and intensity. If you looked at Japanese MMA in sure you would see a lot more fighters with Judo on their fight card.
