Wow. 1 in 20 people had syphilis then? No wonder they started testing for it when applying for a marriage license.

How wonderful that in 1944 penicillin nearly wiped out syphilis and gonorrhea. Too bad it didn't go all the way.

I want to know how many people died because of syphilis from the beginning (around 1490) to now

amazing that this avoids any mention of the ways syphilis can be spread or contracted. "Close personal contact" can mean lots of things n the refusal to talk about sex must have confused plenty of people.

Well but syphilis can be transmited even through kissing or direct contact with a chancre anywhere it is, so probably close personal contact referred to that.

They ought to make it clear that kissing can transmit it (I didn't even know that), and the words 'sexual intercourse' should have been perfectly acceptable in the narration. The military films of the 1940's were far more frank and well done even by today's standards (except that mention of homosexual sex was omitted for obvious reasons). In any case, syphilis is serious if untreated. I'd appreciate any film that informs people that this disease can blind you, turn your brain into mush, or deform your unborn child.

Many people were still alive. Syphilis doesn't often develope into tertiary syphilis. It's like tuberculosis , most people with tuberculosis don't develope active tuberculosis. I am dermatologist/venereologist. primary and latent syphilis show negative result.( RPR and VDRL). before developing tertiary syphilis , you need to develop secondary syphilis, many people with syphilis don't develope secondary syphilis that's why they often show negative result. some people with late latent sypgilis show negative result with treponemal tests.that's why we also need to know the history of the patient and the symptoms the patient experienced to confirm the diagnosis..

Syphilis peak was 1955. Returning military had spread so much it was epidemic. We had good public health then so contact teaching fixed this.

It is amazing that in 1939 Men / Men Sex was not a transmitter of Syphilis. Surely they were not that naïve?

Why does this sound a lot like the older cartoons? That part when it sounds like the record is worn?? Knowing info is safest. It’s how these doctors figured all this out. a bit confusing I’m thinking 🤔 kills more than fire+war+omg !!!
