The shale you are depositing in the woodyard reminds me of a job I worked on. I am a retired land surveyor. The job got shut down after fossils were found while excavating the foundations for a condo project. ( suggestion ) Take a few buckets of shale, Put them under the new roof some place out of the way and JUST TAKE A LOOK!! You can do that while the snow removal equipment is warming up for snow withdrawl.

Up in the Pacific NW we run canvas or heavy guage roll-up walls around our milling sheds. You can drop them all or just the ones you need for shade or windbreaks. This allows for access from all sides as needed for maintenance or reconfiguring of equipment and workflow. I think it is really fantastic that you have added firestarter to your lineup! Special Hello to Hunter!

And your grading it all for perfect water runoff. Yessir, when it's all said and done you're gonna have an awesome facility there. It's so much fun watching it happen, thank you so much for sharing it w us. Adler's Adventures was really good yesterday, thanks for introducing them, what a huge company! Glad you got a buck already. Are you gonna mount him in the gameroom? I do understand and feel for you, spending daylight not working on one of so many projects can get frustrating, but hey buddy, fellow retiree, there's no time cards or punch clocks in your life now, so don't stress. You're a free man now! You and only you call the shots now, so call 'em any way you desire! If you didn't have to pay tax you'd be totally free! Dang, I just ruined everything I just said! Sorry. Anyway maybe you'll get a bigger buck in WV. See ya later!👍🚜❤🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hi Mike. Total fan here. I was thinking, generalizing about the possibilities of enclosing the new building. Mind you, you already have an enclosed building so maybe my reasoning should be skewed with that reality. Okay, onto some of my thoughts. These are rough idea. I respect your methodology and the way you do things. So these are only seeds. 1. The wide open end towards the house could be 3 huge barn sliding doors, enabling you to open up 2/3rds of the opening on either side, or completely close it in. They could ride on tracks above, and rollers below. (Once the concrete is done on these ideas) 2. Put garage uplifting doors on the sides, and in order to do that you would need a good surface about two feet wide, or wide enough to cover the posts and the Y's at the top and that would make a nice mating surface for the doors to ride/sit on. 3. I'm not sure about the need for access to the pile to run the spliting operation. That of course needs to have an open area for the conveyor of the splitter. Considering closing off that end coming in about a quarter of the buildings length. I started my shop in a huge barn that leaked, and what I did was build an inner plastic tent, and used a 320,000 BTU kerosene salamander heater with a thermostat, and it kept it nice and toasty in there. You need to be able to change the air with one of those, but then of course with a barn, and needing to open and close doors that is ideal. A good friend of mine named Mike likes to say, "Slow but sure wins the race, take your time, think it through" :-) I know you are going to ace your design. Can't wait to see how you develop it.

I'm 75 and no longer hunt, but I still enjoy going to the lease. I keep the fire going and the coffee fresh and hot. Deer hunting has really changed. Very serious for our hunters. My son-in-law is hunting one particular deer that has been on the deer cams for most of the summer and is probably the only deer he will attempt to harvest. That's too particular for me so I just listen to the stories and think about when I was a kid hunting with my dad.

“Same feeling I got when I seen Melissa”,,,That was a very nice statement Mike? I remember the time I first laid eyes on my Rosie. It was a little different because she was dancing and it was her back side that I saw first, lol. When she turned around I was done for. She was beyond Beautiful. She was a little hard to get, but I persevered,and a couple years later we were married. I lost my Rosie to pancreatic cancer after 42 years of marriage. It was ten weeks from diagnosis to death. That was sixteen years ago. So Mike,,,,give you’re Melissa a long hug and if she asks what that was for tell her it was for yourself. I’d give anything to be able to hold my Rose once more.

Nothing but sand here in Florida, I do wish we had shale like that. I have so many projects I could use it on. With that said our sand makes for easy digging.
@DensityMatrix12 жыл бұрын
I live close to Mike, the shale is a problem in this area. It’s called Pennsylvania mudstone, it is a very poor substrate material. This urban area has more landslides than any other region of the country. When the shale gets wet, the water penetrates between the shale layers causing them to float apart… Keep in mind this part of PA is very steep and we receive a good amount of rain. We also have two centuries of mining, causing subsidence in lots of areas. I also used to live in Florida, though and the shale is better than having a sinkhole form in your backyard, or having the water table be 2 inches above ground.😮

Good morning! Nice work on the floor and outskirts of the pavilion - it’s always mildly surprising to me to see that shale track in so smoothly packed. All we have on our farm is sandstone, and even your equipment couldn’t make that stuff as smooth as you can get that shale. And my little Ford 3000, even with a loader and bush hog on it, weighs only about 5,000 lbs, barely over 2 Mg. The only stuff I can break up is the leftover stone from the above ground part of the old homestead-era barn that got burned after it collapsed. Those stones are really brittle and sometimes shatter just from dumping out of a raised bucket. Your buck is well bigger than most that came off our farm this year. Our biggest probably compared to yours. Not to say there weren’t bigger bucks seen, but those guys didn’t get seen close during the season. 😉 Good eating, though.

I'm guessing the large majority of people who watch OWTM videos do not come close to living the same way as the Morgans. They don't have the property, equipment, etc. to do the same things as the Morgans. The appeal is that they would like to, or liked to have...past tense, lived a similar life. So they live it vicariously thru the Morgans. I'm that way to an extent but perhaps I'm more attracted to those secluded people who live a subsistence life in the Alaskan wilderness. Lots of TV shows like that. But in lieu of that, I'll continue using my 25 year old Craftsman chainsaw to cut up the odd blow down on my 1-acre of woods, watch the occasional deer that walk thru, and fire up the old lawn tractor to cut the grass. Oh, and I have plenty of Japanese stiltgrass to tame too...just like the Morgans. haha!

Got my bag of the firewood starter last week Mike, have you ever thought of adding another row or two to the firewood pit to give you some more capacity or storage if you run out of crates. Will there be a roof over the the firewood pit ? A hoop building but up against your building you just put up would be great cuz you would have air movement everywhere and everything would stay dry. Didn't you talk about putting a road or drve from the firewood processing area to the main road so you could get semi's in and around without any problems. Do you ever go pheasant hunting Mike we have lots here in Nw Iowa and Se South Dakota, my son lives in Sioux Falls SD and he hunts both states for pheasants when he has a chance because he is a accountant and is very busy especially with year end stuff for farmers.

Just curious as to why you didn't have at least half walls put on that building on the sides, to help protect the equipment better. I know you said you were going to do that later with wood you produce but with the crew there building it, wouldn't it have been easier and a lot faster to have them put those walls up. The things inside won't get as wet as if setting out in the open but they are still going to get wet.
