You know what you absolutely nailed it with playing to the crowd. I mean look they're amazing - I've seen them a few times now - but my best memories of them are indeed when they interacted with us. And yes it's really painful that there are a lot of bands not doing this

I saw and shot Within Temptation this August at M'era Luna Festival, ehre they were one of the two Headliners. And they deserved the headliner position completely: What a show, what an energy, what a performance. I saw te several times over the years, but this show was by far the best ever for me. Sharon was just incredible.

One of the guitar players is Sharon’s husband, Robert Westerholt. He left the band in 2011 to take care of their 3 children; Luna, Aiden and Logan. Robert still writes music for the band in plays rhythm guitar in the studio. On stage he was replaced by guitarist Stefan Helleblad.

Sharon is super nervous when performing on stage. I think she felt safer when not being distracted in their early days. In more recent shows they interact a lot with each other, including Sharon. The bass player is the most "shy" or "introvert" person in the band. But he's been around for over 20 years now and he's a really nice guy. I love that song and this particular show, they were still so raw and unpolished then but that has its own charm to me.

I saw an interview a couple of years ago where Sharon said that after the pandemic she hasn't been anywhere near as nervous on stage as before. And I think it can be heard - she sounds stronger and more confident and relaxed nowadays.

Your points about their crowd interaction is one of the reasons I will never get tired of seeing Within Temptation live. I love their energy and acknowledgement of the crowd. Just like with Nightwish, I've seen them live multiple times live and never feel like I've seen the same show twice, even if the setlists were similar. I always love Sharon's willingness to talk to the crowd between songs as well. Or even sometimes on the intro of Ice Queen she'll miscount getting the crowd into it as she's busy talking to us in her non-native language and then she'll laugh at herself and comment about how she should know how to count correctly when she's performed that song for 20 years. 😆

This was early in their career, not much budget. If I remember, they were the opening act of the festival, 12:15 pm on a Thursday afternoon, so they may have been forced to take what the festival sound guys gave them. I really like this drummer. Their sound changed after he left, although I don't know if that is causation or merely correlation

Nice review DH. I actually like early Within Temptation better than their new stuff. They sound more commercial now, and Sharon has stopped doing some of her early moves she used to do, like that witchy hand dance she was doing during the show. Also, I really liked the performance as well, the guitar players were on point for this show. 🤘

Despite the pathos and length of the song, it is clearly not among the top 10. Of course, the trick of the video is a live performance of the song, and not it by itself. An interesting performance, but since I have seen all the official DVDs of live performances, it is also not exclusive (only for Within temptation).
