No better place to watch this cult movie in its remote location : Sleddale hall near Shap (Crow crag in the film). July 2018

It's great, I've been twice. The morning after I felt like a pig had shat in my head though.

Why is this film so special to so many people? I've thought so much about it and have a few ideas but can never full satisfy my enquiry. It's as if people actually feel part of the film; the darkness and the tragedy and the hilarity, despite it all. My wife and I made the pilgrimage to Monty's a couple of years ago one freezing February day and it was magical. We then went to the ancient church of St Andrews nearby and renewed our vows. I'll never forget it.

Having a script where every single line is quotable is a key factor. And there's Richard E Grants acting. There is also the tragic universal and relatable truth in the film that is at some point in our lives we all go through hell - some of us make it through, some of us don't. The music is poignant too. Especially the clownish and sad end theme.

I am going to challenge myself to answer your question whilst lazily stirring the honey into my boring Weetabix. In my opinion, Withnail & I is the greatest film about friendship ever made, perhaps because I have never had such a friendship... This film has a depth of meaning that I cannot express in mere words.... I am however content to let it remain just a feeling, a wonderful feeling, purely because it is one that I like, a cinematic comfort-blanket...an all embracing glow rather like that kid in the Ready Brek advert. Yet also a sense of what if, and that is where it is, hope, I find this film a ray of hope. Out with the old and in with the new yet how important to remember the Vim under the sink and the five bars on. This film is a pool of both joy and sadness, one that I cannot resist dipping a toe in at least once a year, and if nobody is looking... perhaps up to my knee. Because we are after all still here, we are still players in the game, so let us not look back other than to remind ourselves that despite being weighed by our baggage we have actually come quite a distance. Best wishes

I'm Australian, and was driving through that area last July - oh, had I known! I deliberately (not by mistake) went and had a look at Penrith because of that movie. I'll be back, I'm coming back there...

Its the Shakespeare, alcohol, great retro soundtrack and locations that make this film. Crow Crag didn't have power and a similar cottage on Dartmoor was real shit in the winter with constant niggling about every amp like Apollo 13. But the film makes rain seem poetic. I reckon the last scene was the concept and script panned out from that.

Looks perfect, and looks like you got lucky with the weather. Certainly better than the weather when Withnail and Marwell arrived there! :-)

Did you know quotes from the film have even made their way into House Music. There’s a dance music track by Halo Varga called Future that samples when he says “making an enemy of our own future.” Check for yourself, Halo Varga - Future, it’s uploaded here on KZbin.
