Last year, Italy was hit by one of the worst droughts of the past century. With this piece, we tried to address some fundamental questions: what is happening? Is it exceptional? Could it happen more often in the future? What could be the consequences of this event, and what solutions could we adopt to prevent (and react to) future emergencies? We spoke with climatologists, farmers, journalists and politicians to seek answers and give our audience the necessary tools to understand this crisis.
This video blends on-the-ground reporting with in-studio explanatory journalism. The idea was to provide its audience with both an understanding of the current situation in Italy and wider, fundamental concepts about the climate emergency - for example the difference between weather and climate.
By exploring a small water-management conflict between two regions in Italy, Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige, we were able to highlight the potential geopolitical consequences of water scarcity. We highlighted possible solutions - and the political and infrastructural limits that make them hard to implement quickly - as suggested by a broad spectrum of interviewees, such as climatologists, farmers, journalists and politicians. This video was one of the few media pieces in Italy that attempted to deepen the public narration of this crisis.
