I’m Jackie any other day... but when it comes to buying a car... I’m Preston. My moms had to tell me to chill when I went with her to buy a car. Lol But I would DEFINITELY say take as much power out of the dealers hands as possible. My tips (as if anyone cares... but imma type up my lil 2 cents anyway 😝): 1. KNOW WHAT YOU WANT AND NEED! Do your research and do not let a salesman tell you what you need. Know the make, model, color, options... all of it. 2. If you can, buy slightly used. 10k miles or less. Certified if possible. Cars depreciate as soon as you drive them off the lot. Buying slightly used diminishes the hit you’ll take on depreciation and the car still feels pretty new... 3. If possible, don’t finance with the dealer or manufacturer. This gives the dealer way more negotiation points and ways to work the deal in their favor. Now you’re negotiating Price, Interest rate, down payment, monthly payment, etc. Get pre-approved with a Credit Union. Rates are better and take much less work to achieve. 4. If you do get pre-approved for an auto loan , ALLOW the dealer to think you’re financing with them as long as possible during negotiations. They’ll be more willing to come down on the price of the car if they think you’re financing with them because they think they’ll make up for it on the financing aspect. Then tell them “Oh I have my financing secured already”. 5. Like Preston, be willing to walk away. They will call you back, even if it’s the next day. EDIT 2021: adding number... 6. Y’all PLEASE, if you do go with dealer/manufacture financing PLEASE don’t sign up for these 6,7,8 year finance terms! If you have to go more than 5 years (and that’s THE UTTER max) to get the payment you can afford... please humble yourself and realize you cannot afford that particular car. The interest spread out over that amount of time is a RIDICULOUS amount and is of benefit ONLY to the one providing the financing. And obviously as believers, know that what’s for you is for you. Don’t be afraid to speak up but be ready to walk away and let go. You’ll find another one. 🤷🏾‍♂️

The biggest takeaway for me was that we have to be strong and be ready to fight for the breakthrough. Because imagine if they hadn’t fought for less than 9%? That car that was supposed to be a blessing would’ve have instead been an expensive headache. Hallelujah!! This has a transferable life lesson, amen!!

You're so right. I know every time I've gone to the dealership and purchased a car the first thing they want to know is how much I'm going to put down. And my answer is always 'nothing'. One reason I say nothing is because I already know where I'm going to get my car financed at -- a Credit Union. And I already know that my credit union will go up to a 120%LTV without backend or 140% LTV with backend products. I would also recommend people to do their research on going to their financial institution again preferably a Credit Union and getting pre-approved. That will help you know how much your financial institution is willing to finance a vehicle for you. You won't go over the amount and stay within the amount that they pre-approve you for.

Good tips here! I once bought a BMW and negotiated a great deal because I was frank about what I wasn’t willing to pay. I also had a perfectly good running, newish car and told them I really wasn’t in the market for another car, just curious. I genuinely felt torn between the BMW and a Jeep Wrangler and had a Jeep dealer on the phone while I was looking at the BMW. Long story short, I walked outta there with the keys to a 3 series and a car note that should’ve only qualified me for a Toyota Camry. One other piece of advice: try to purchase towards the end of the summer when dealerships are eager to clear inventory.

Looks like a Telluride. I convinced my guy to get 1 last year. Why? He was talking about a Jeep! I'm like, when we have kids, that jeep isn't going to be comfy for us all. So yeah that Telluride is actually a BANG for your buck SUV🤷🏾‍♀️ + with the services, etc. He had to order the SUV and it came in a week (cuz it was flying off the lots). This was great! Congratulations guys. In the future or for anyone trying to purchase a car. PLEASE PLEASE check your Credit Unions. They offer the best rates for purchasing a vehicle with no money down!!!! This leave room to go to a dealership to negotiate the price of the car. Also if you bought a car you can always refi your loan to a lower rate threw a credit union. Some credit unions are more lenient then others.
