And corded is not going to be less powerful than corded. While comparing the two, consider the fact most corded drills are geared lower than their 120 VAC counterparts. Subsequently, corded drills are better suited for drilling holes in wood, including when using a pocket hole jig.
@ashutoshsrivastava3032 күн бұрын
True. Corded usually are more powerful but drill or Brad nailer or jigsaw, i like to be cordless. It's just more versatile for those use case.

@@ashutoshsrivastava303, others of us stay with corded and air for the reliability. If I still worked site jobs where, occasionally, there was no power, then I'd have a battery or charge driven nailer or two. Maybe a jig saw. I use my cordless drills and impacts religiously. Even in my shop, but I wont be replacing all my impact drills, mud stirrors and other drills anytime soon. I have about ten cordless tools. The two new ones replacing the soon to be donated Panasonics aside, I note the never ending fading of run times. I have the corded DeWalt version of that track saw, and I 99% agree with your comments about it. I was new to woodworking, and I wasn't ready for a table saw when I started my first project so I got a track saw instead. I went with DeWalt as all of my other tools are DeWalt and I knew it was a solidly built performer. BUT.... I didn't know about the OTHER stuff (that you rightly pointed out) at that time. In hindsight I'd have gone with something else for that price point... probably would've just paid the extra and went with Ze Germans! BUT thanks to you I found out about the Blue Metal version of the square guide and that has made life so much better with it!! BUT... I do disagree on one aspect, which is the plunging mechanism. I LOVE this one compared to the standard single point hinge mechanisms (once I understood the reasoning and how it works). It's because it's designed so you just push forward and it keeps the mechanism lowered. On the single point hinges you have to push down and forward during the cut or you risk having the mechanism unhinging and the blade coming back up. This comes into play the most as you extend your arm and reach to finish a long cut across a piece if you're not able to relocate your body during the cut. With the single point hinge as your arm extends to it's maximum reach it will naturally begin unhinging the single point hinge mechanisms. With the DeWalt you just keep pushing forward and it stays down the whole time. This isn't to say it's not awkward to get used, it is if you're used to ALL the other saws on the market. But once "getting it" I've found it to be nicer. Of course to each their own :)

Speaking of confessions, here a beauty. I purchased a Ridgid track saw to build a new pantry for my wife using Baltic Birch plywood. Very nice stuff to work with btw. I also purchased a 6 1/2 inch 60 tooth Diablo blade to cut up the plywood panels for the best finish possible. First time using the saw I was not happy with the cut or speed of cut. Saw kept jamming and leaving burn marks in the edges. I continued on finishing the project and sanded out almost all the burn marks etc. It was several weeks later I wanted to cut up some rough lumber and decided to put the stock Ridgid blade back on when I realized I has mounted the Diablo blade on backwards. " You idiot I cried loudly". I had no idea there were specialized track saw blades and just mounted the Diablo with the pretty writing and pictures facing out like it should be. I re-mounted the Diablo blade on the proper way (pretty writing and pictures not showing) and did a test cut on some leftover Baltic birch plywood and it was like butter. I was very close to returning the saw but now its a 10 out of 10. Live and learn.
@wittworks2 күн бұрын
Haha. That's the one thing with those diablo blades. If you notice on my ryobi test I initially did the same thing and put it on backwards with the label facing out (naturally.) I caught it off camera and change directions)

It was after failing to accurately trim a countertop miter with a carefully constructed diy saw track on a kitchen job, that i decided I couldn't avoid a track saw any longer. I did a ton of research and then tried to order a cordless Festool only to find out that none were available to be shipped for at least 3 months. Covid! My second choice was the 36v Makita even though my batteries were mostly yellow and some red. Love the saw, especially the 110" track. Hate that the depth adjustment doesn't account for the track. Cordless is a big thing even with an attached vac hose because of power requirements. You need 2 seperate circuits which is a big deal in a reno where power availability is at a premium. Love your video. I'm saddened that i didn't realize there was a red tracksaw.

I have the Makita XGT track saw since a couple of months. I had the 2x18v but swapped it out since that was one of the only tools I had left in LXT. It’s a beast of a saw. It has kickback control though. The saw stops instantly when it kicks back. The only gripes I have with it are the flimsy depth stop and the lack of a riving knife. They should have definitely added that on the XGT version. They basically released the same saw with three different motors. I got a free 4ah tabless battery with it though. Can’t complain much after getting the saw, container, two tracks and a battery for €500. This thing is built to last. Don’t see myself buying anything new for the next 10+ years. Thanks for the video. I love the comparisons, even though I’m already out of the market. Always love to see what other brands came up with.

I'll probably never wear it out... and as values go, that is hard to beat. I'll never need to replace it just because a battery platform changed. And with a hose connected to the vac, and the saw powered through the vac, working at a fixed MFT style table in a workshop...batteries just don't make sense.

Great review, thanks! Regarding Makita's lack of anti-kickback they do sell a "Kickback Reduction Stopper" (part no. 1913J9-2). Probably not as effective as a riving knife or electronic system. And as for Festool not having anti-tipping, I heard the reason is anti tipping mechanisms have play on them so proper technique to ensure accuracy is to always have a hand pushing down on the base, and if users are doing that, then what's the purpose of the anti-tip? One could argue that it's for when the saw is not in use and just sitting on the track, but from my experience then the saw just tips the track over too (at least with 1400mm Makita tracks and corless saws). As for my favourite. Also TS 60. Have had all 3 Makitas (last one being the 40V) and moved to the corded TS 60 as most of my work is in a shop. And luckily I live in one of those countries that gets the 240V plug-it cord version of the TS 60 so I just have a plug-it cord permanently attached to my Festool dust extractor hose. It's almost like being cordless, haha

Since I will *ALWAYS* be using dust collection with a track saw, I simply can't see any reason to not get the less expensive corded version. Simply use a woven "cord organizer" used to organize the rat's nest of cords under your desk to make a single package out of the dust extraction hose and the track saw cord and you get something that has exactly the same ergonomics of a cordless saw still anchored to a dust extractor by a hose.

build a deck, patio, gazebo, dock, etc and see if you change your mind. Track saw precision anywhere you can carry it is worth its weight in gold. 99% of the time I agree 100% with you. That 1% is worth every penny especially when buying the same brand saw as everything else you already own.
@CraigularjJoeWoodworks3 күн бұрын
No sir, smh… the ts60 that Drew mentions has an integrated cord that isn’t detachable. So the cord wrap you are referring to won’t work. It would leave 13 feet of cord exposed which makes the problem worse not better
@papparocket2 күн бұрын
@@spsully2582 You are probably right. But I already had a 60V DeWalt circular saw prior to get a track saw (Makita corded as per a previous review here) and several pieces of aluminum extrusion that I can join together to get a 13 feet of straight edge (2 5' for breaking down plywood sheets and a 3' for cross-cutting up to 24"). I have two "story blocks" that are exactly the distance from the edge of the shoe to the inside of the blade that I use to speed alignment of the track. Just line the block up on the cut line on the far end of the piece to be cut, butt the extrusion up to the block, and clamp in place. Repeat on the near end and cut. I get very nearly as good an accuracy as my track saw that way at the cost of an extra minute of setup and a lot of saw dust. But if I had purchased my track saw before my cordless circular saw, I probably would have still gone with the corded track saw and just accepted working with an extension cord on the relatively few times I would need to make exact cuts outside of my shop.
@bsoneill3Күн бұрын
For me, I also think corded versus cordless impacts life/replacement of the tool. Especially drills and drivers. The manufactures make those tools so inexpensive that in 5 years time when the battery needs to be replaced, it's cheaper to buy a new tool. So I'm often asking myself if I think the tool will be sufficiently worn out by the time the battery might be obsolete- if not, I may buy corded version even if it means some inconvenience. Keep in mind, I'm DIY/hobbyist so I am not putting the wear and tear on a tool or saving a huge amount of time with cordless that a trade would be.

@@wittworksthe main reason for battery overheating is an amp load too high for the batteries. Higher quality batteries will use cells that have a 15+ amp hour continuous draw rating with the best being 30 amp hour continuous draw. Staying at 75% or less of the continuous draw rate will dramatically improve battery life. The Hercules batteries from harbor freight (especially the 8/12 amp hour) demonstrate this when using a tool that states “5 amp hour or higher battery required “. Having a battery with multiple stacks of cells inside reduces the draw per cell, and thus generates less heat. If you ever redo the test, use something that has a double or triple stack of cells- even if they only have 18650 cells inside. 21700 cells in a double or triple stack give orders of magnitude difference

I haven't had any issues with my M18 track saw, so I cant say yet if it is the same way. FWIW the other half of my power tools are Black and Yellow black and decker. So I do have a cheap Harbor Freight table saw and radial arm saw. When I need to cut up sheets of plywood, I use a piece of flat 1/8" aluminum bar and two little clamps for either end with my little Ryobi 18 volt circular saw. It requires a tape measure to get the bar placed correctly, but it makes perfect cuts every time. My total cost? Nothing because I already had the aluminum left over from another project, and a drawer full of clamps.

Thanks Drew....I know this doesn't make any sense, but I recently installed butcher block counter tops at my daughter's. I bought the 24 tooth blade from makita to make the rips cuts, but honestly, the 64 tooth blade winded up giving me a much cleaner cut on the rips. Idk, I'm just saying. I've got the makita. Would really like to get the festool 60 when mine dies. Unfortunately, as little as I really use it, I doubt that'll ever happen.

Oh Drew! I wish you could have seen the chaos you caused in my house. I got done eating dinner and asked my teenage children if they wanted to finish watching the ShopNation video we didn’t finish the other night, to which all agreed. I opened the KZbin app and what did I see? A new video from wittworks! I said as much and immediately the pace went from leisurely to mad dash to get the best viewing spots next to me, as my phone isn’t that big of a screen for a family :) Anyhow, great video. We love your dry humor and family friendly content along with great topics. They all say you are their favorite creator and ask me constantly if you have posted again. Their only complaint is your lack of frequency in posting. They think you should become like MORR and do 3 videos a week!!!

I own the corded version of the DeWalt track saw, and it’s a solid saw that eats ANYTHING you put it on. However, my cordless track saw is the Milwaukee for all the reasons listed in this video. I’ll still use both, but I’ll likely buy a second Milwaukee over ever buying the cordless DeWalt. The Festool is fine if you don’t overuse it. I’ve seen production carpenters complain about Festool tools dying due to their overuse of the tools. I like not having headaches. So contractor favored tools catch my eye more often than not.
@wittworks3 күн бұрын
good stuff. That's why I initiatively became a makita guy. All the contractors I knew when I began used makita for everything. I figured if they lasted in their hands it was good enough for me.

I have the Ridgid. You must have 2 4ah batteries for any production. My other complaint is a thin curf blade is too narrow for the riving knife and doesn’t work. Other than that, I like it. I just cut down 13 sheets of plywood and it’s very accurate.

Could you and possibly Travis, design and 3D print an assembly that would mimic the Festool and Milwaukee designs that you could sell. I would buy that in a second. I have the Ryobi, and I'll say it took a lot of tinkering to get it to work well with hardwoods, I even have a jerryrigged piece of wood with tape skirt to help with dust collection, I bought a 2nd set of 55" tracks and realized they don't exactly align with the 1st set, so I had to measure and compensate. It's sure is a PITA and if I was paying full price I'd definitely skip it, but right now as a woodworker starting out I can't complain since I did get it for $130 from direct tools. I definitely agree on the price, and honestly it should cost no more than $150 max.

I've been generally happy with my Wen tracksaw, that is until recently. While making a cabinet I needed to cross cut some panels to an accurate 45* angle. The scale on the side is trash when choosing your angle. I had a hard time getting it right on 45 and had to use some clamps to extend the blade and the used my digital angle gauge to ensure the blade was at 45*.

Home rigid user here, overheating batteries is pretty common and probably my biggest complaint. Impacts drills and even their portable power source, I've had them all shut off from heat. Their tools are capable of pretty good performance especially for the price but their batteries overheat verry easily. It might just be the temperature cutoff (I've have M12 batteries that get verry hot also but keep working) or it might be a design flaw.

I've been using The Festool 75, and two 55' rails for about 22 years. I guess back then they didn't think a riving knife was needed, as it didn't come with one, yet, I've never had any issues because of that, but one time I did because I first set it up, I adjusted the track guides too loose. Once I fixed that, no matter what I cut, it was good. About 3 years ago I bought the Makita 10' and a 36"? rail and I haven't had to re-adjust the rail guides when going between the two brands. If for some reason I ever needed to buy a new saw, and If I decided to go battery, more than likely I'd go with the Makita because I have several other Makita tools, so I would probably buy a bare tool Makita.

I don't have a rip cut blade for my track saw. I will probably look into that. One thing I see with rip blades is that tons of them have an alternating top bevel. They should generally have a 90 degree bevel on the top of the tooth. That makes the cut a lot easier, and it also gives one the option of having smooth bottom cuts on slots one may cut, which is great for certain joinery tasks.

The Ridgid is really designed for a higher amp battery. When they sell it as a kid, it comes with an 8.0 amp battery. That being said, I use mines with a 4.0 battery all the time, because I didn’t feel like opening the 8.0 battery. But I’m just cutting plywood, so it’s no problem

Yeah, I'm thinking either the 4amp battery dropped in voltage and the saw's internal electronics refused to use it, or the battery overheated and a thermal safety mechanism kicked in.

luckily in europe standard tracks are 60" (1500mm) long :) yeay ryobi is shockingly bad, idk what they were thinking. yeah battery was a weak link, standard 4ah is not enough for a powerful circ saw, that is why makita and festool went with two. larger pack like 6 or 8ah with 21700 should be optimal

I do not own a track saw but have multiple battery systems, definitely no Festool, but do have Hilti. The one thing I do experience with Ridgid is poor battery performance, The drills, impact wrenches, are really good tools especially the 3 inch cutting tool. Ryobi batteries I feel out perform Ridgid's. Ryobi has those tools I kind of embarrassed to have people see me use but the Hp series are really good for the money. Milwaukee, Dewalt, and Makita I'll use on bigger projects. Hilti is for showboating. I'm stupid like that.

I dont own a tracksaw but am an engineer. the vacuum problem seems easy to solve. A vacuum should have a microphone in the unit that listens to audio from the vacuum tube. The tube is a waveguide and even basic electronics would be able to reliably determine whether the unit should be turned on and off. Perhaps an opportunity for a third party to devise an accessory that takes care of this for the user, and have the advantage of being manufacturer agnostic.
