Vasil Milev was born in 1917 in the village of Sinapovo, Yambol region. His had a big family and his father gave him away to become a shepherd. At that time it was a tradition for every shepherd to play an instrument and Vasil chose the whistle. He made one himself from the core of elder (Sambucus Nigra). Very soon he realised that his whistle lacks tonality. Therefore he bought himself a kaval from a fair in the village of Elhovo. He thought himself to play in all the registers and soon the people started listening and enjoying his playing the kaval. His grandfather told him that if he really wants to become a great kaval player he should go and find the famous player Georgi Kehayov. After a long and hard thinking Vasil decided to go and find this player. First he went to the city of Burgas, then to Varna and then back to Burgas since he always seemed to miss him. One day as he was wandering the streets he heard a kaval playing from somewhere. He followed the gentle and enchanting melody to a big restaurant. There, a short man, with black curly hair and short thick eyebrows was playing in front of a crowd of people. Everybody was listening with held breath, not moving and mesmerised by his play. This was Dragan Karapchanski. Vasil went back to his village and started practising the kaval with renewed vigour. In 1944 he moved to live in Plovdiv. This is where his professional career as a kaval player started. In 1949 he was among the founders of the Folk Ensemble in Plovdiv. He played there until it was closed in 1963. The whole orchestra was transferred to the Radio and TV Centre in Plovdiv. Vasil played there until his retirement in 1977. He visited many countries during his career. Characteristic of his play was his “throat” playing. His kaval playing follows the Thracian style. His son Milcho Milev inherited his talent and also became a great kaval master.
