Italy might actually win with this song, and with Francesco. (Especially if Loreen loses Melfest). It's a great song, and the staging will get many votes. Place your bets now! And I'd LOVE to see y'all in Italy in 2018!! Now, pick a city... Sanremo, Milano, Roma, Venezia, Verona, Bologna, Torino, Genova (the city, not Poli) etc. :)

I agree. He is extremely charming and super cute. His voice is very good and interesting. The song is uplifting and happy and simple! People can relate to it even though they don't speak Italian. I have my doubts about the gorilla though. I believe Italy has a lot of chances winning the show this year (especially if more ballads keep coming), especially televoting. Sweden missing the victory in 2011 but they won in 2012. Denmark came close in 2010 and 2011 (almost) but won in 2013. Same for Russia (2006, 2007 but won in 2008). I believe Italy will win either this year or very soon. RAI better get ready and stop the crap.

When I watched Sanremo I thought this deserved to win. I'm not sure I love it like I usually love Italy's entries, but I cannot dislike it because it's just sooo catchy and fun! I even think the gorilla works in weird kind of way, lol :) It will be in the top for sure. There are still many songs we haven't heard but I think it is safe to say this one will reach top 5 if it's competing in the second half of the final. So yeah, a good choice for Italy and a very entertaining performance! They absolutely deserve to win because they should have won already in 2013, 2015 and 2016, at least in my opinion... ^^

I'm following Francesco Gabbani since last year's Sanremo when he won Newcomer's section. Out of blue he was announced as participant. I was extremely excited and he grew up on me totally. He was my fav and actually won. Only he and Tako were my favs who won their NFs. He and his song have everything. He's my 1st and who knows maybe he'll even win Eurovision. He's 3rd in the odds right now. Festivale di Sanremo brought us variety and high level, it was amazing. Btw.William I'm going wet too under there, he's extremely charming and so joyful ;P

I was so much into the Ermal Meta's song "Vietato Morire" and I almost start crying when they read his name on third place. I love him so much and I must said I was really really disapointed when Francesco won. I felt like this song is a joke, but now when the emotions has gone I kinda accept it :) Not loving it and I would prefer Ermal but it is okay :) And I would love to say that it is so heartwarming to see how Christian talks about his country and Francesco. This gave me joy after the spanish eurodrama :)

I think at the moment it's a tie between Italy and Finland, with Italy perhaps edging it out because of its difference from the other entries. They're the separate sides of the same coin because Finland is the serious side and Italy shows the up-tempo side, it's just the stylistic pop differences that works on Italy's side. Also, I'd love a translated version, but perforrmed on the night in Eurovision, it can certainly be performed as is, definitely. :)

The entire meaning of Occidentali's Karma of Francesco Gabbani: “Essere o dover essere, il dubbio amletico contemporaneo” (“To be, or have to be, the doubt of the Hamlet of these days”) recalls the famous line in 0Shakespeare’s Hamlet “to be or not to be” but with a change, because in our society the real doubt is to choice between to be, to have substance, or have to be, that is the appearance. “Come l’uomo del neolitico, nella tua gabbia 2×3 mettiti comodo” (“As the man of the Neolithic, make yourself at ease in your cage of 2 × 3 “). This verse seems to compare the prehistoric man [Neolitic is the New Stone age, ca. 10000-2000 BC, transl.], to the modern man. The first lived in a cave, but the second finds himself in increasingly small spaces. The reference to the 2 × 3 meters could refer either to the size of the offices, which are often only cubicles, or to the apartments, where many of us live. Easy answers, unnecessary dilemmas “Intellettuali nei caffè, internettologi… L’intelligenza è démodé risposte facili, dilemmi inutili” (“Intellectuals in cafes, internettologues … The intelligence is out of fashion, easy answers, unnecessary dilemmas”). Here it is stressed that now anyone with an internet connection feels himself like an intellectual and you think you know everything just because you can do a search on google. While true intelligence is overlooked and undervalued in our society, we want quick answers just a click away, but that, in fact, arises only silly questions. This concept is also reflected in the second verse when he says “tutti tuttologi col web, coca dei popoli, oppio dei poveri” (“all ‘we-know-all’s with the web, the people’s cocaine, opium of the poor”). The reference is to the famous Karl Marx’s phrase “religion is the opium of the people” According to the German philosopher, the people, especially the poorer classes, seeking consolation from the misery in which they are in religion and in the promise of a better eternal life in comparison to the earthly one, just as you look for a distraction from reality through drugs. Today this is the consolation in the internet search, where we all are “we-know-all’s” believing to be experienced and knowledgeable enough to be able to have their say on any topic or event. Also in their social profiles, they all show to others a full and happy life trying to erase the pain and suffering in this way. anonymous selfie-addicts Soci onorari del gruppo dei selfisti anonimi“‘ (“Honorary Members of the group of anonymous selfie-addicts”). Westerner addiction of today is not the alcohol, but to take selfies, a sign of our vanity and narcissism; that’s why in this verse, Alcoholics Anonymous are replaced by anonymous selfie-addicts. AAA cercasi storie dal gran finale, sperasi, comunque vada panta rei and singing in the rain” (“WANTED stories from the grand finale, hoping for whatever happens panta rei and singing in the rain” [The three A’s is a habit in Italy to put your announcements as first in the alphabetic list, transl.]). The singer recalls the famous Heraclitus’ “panta rei” phrase meaning “everything flows”, ie that everything is always in progress, everything changes and nothing stays the same. Western man seems looking for a glorious finale, but in any case, everything will go on, without giving yourself too much importance. It also refers to the song “Singing in the Rain” eponymous musical, symbol of carelessness. WANTED virtual humanity The second prechorus says “AAA cercasi umanità virtuale, sex appeal, comunque vada pianta rei and singing in the rain” (“WANTED virtual humanity, sex appeal, whatever happens plant rei and singing in three rain”. It recalls as more and more to us trying to establish relationships and relationships on the internet, with people who we have never even met; you feel the need humanity, but you prefer virtual contact. “Lezioni di Nirvana, c’è il Buddha in fila indiana, per tutti un’ora d’aria, di gloria” (“Lessons of Nirvana, there is the Buddha in a single line, for every hour of air, of glory,” [‘fila Indiana’ refers to a single line, one person wide, to make the queue/ennemy look smaller when you approach your ennemy. ‘Indiana’ refers to the native Americans. transl.]) The refrain, as explained by the same Gabbani, refers to how more and more Westerners are seeking inner peace in Oriental arts and then go to “nirvana school”. In fact nirvana in Buddhism is the ultimate goal in life where you find peace and you are free of pain. The moment of meditation becomes “the hour of air”, literally means the moment when the prisoners in jail can get out of their cells, and then the moment when the West tries to take a break from your busy life, but in reality we can not fully understand these practices because they do not belong to us and, as stated by the singer, we turn out “awkward” and maybe even funny, as the picture of “Buddha in single line.” The naked ape dances “La folla grida un mantra, l’evoluzione inciampa, la scimmia nuda balla. Occidentali’s karma” (“The crowd shouts a mantra, the evolution stumbles, the naked ape dances. Western’s karma”). The mantra is a sacred formula repeated continuously during meditation. In my opinion, this verse may refer to all those situations where we’re continuously repeating a phrase or slogan, as at the disco when we together sing the hit of the moment with our hands into heaven. At that moment, the evolution of the species seems to take a step back and the man dances. In fact, “The Naked Ape” is a book of the zoologist Desmond Morris, where he studied the man, watching him with a scientific approach as an animal, comparing its behavior with those of primates. Karma, which literally translates to “act”, indicates in religions and Eastern philosophies the law for which man is responsible for his actions and each of these corresponds to a result that will have repercussions in future lives, and while a good action produces a result positive, negative action will have negative consequences.

Keep the song as it is (as well as the presentation). The song was a good choice. Italy will do well this year. The best Big 5 entry and for sure top 10, probably top 5 (which includes the chance to win). It's not my personal number 1 (that's still Lindita) but it's my number 2 (3: Finland) and this entry has the best chances to win at the moment. But it's way too early to make any predictions. Many of the "big players" are missing.

Great song with a fun message! I love Italian language and I think the humor in the song is admirable. Francesco is not overdoing things. My only worry is about the new cut out version which sounds like a half-song, not a complete one. Much of the message is lost. Besides, the lyrics in general is a bit scattered and unfinished. TBH, the translation into English showed all it's flaws. Some of the words and phrases simply don't make ANY sense. Good for him he's not gonna sing in English because it's a recipe for lower ranking. On the other hand, Italian language is also an obstacle for English speakers - we obviously have a gagreel going on on stage but what's the point behind it? Why do we need a gorilla? What does it symbolise? If we don't know the meaning of the song, the performance will seem more like a bad parody than like a classy humourous act. So, I love the song but I don't believe it's going to win. I think it'll be this year's Sergey Lazarev - fan favourite but second, third or lower with the juries.

I'm just not seeing what everyone else sees in this one. Clever lyrics, I'll need to run them through Google translate to find out. Good choreography. He waves his arms from side to side, and lifts alternate legs. I suppose it's good in that anyone can do it. I've seen Italy do better than this sorry. I'm wondering if Italy are in it to win it or do they just wnt to do well.

Well, about the last sentence, ESC has not been very popular or at least known in Italy until recently. Instead, the Sanremo italian song contest is a popular event and a part of our colture since the end of WW2. We vote for a song so that it wins Sanremo in the first place, which means there’s no actual goal to win ESC too behind the choice. Since 2015 it's now a rule that the Sanremo winner has a right of first refusal when it comes to participate in ESC. I understand if europeans find the song’s choice debatable but this is it :) :)

Hi, I think you are sort of agreeing. Sanremo is a wonderful festival. It's the contest that the Eurovision Song Contest was originally based on. It's a contest in it's own right and the people who enter it see winning as an end in itself, and that's the problem. It's not Italy's national final for The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). When Italy didn't enter ESC from the late 1990's to the early 2000's Sanremo still went ahead. Compare it to Eesti Laul Estonia's national final. That exists to find an ESC entry for Estonia and no other reason. Song writers and singers enter because they want to represent Estonia in the ESC, and that's their only reason. This means they enter songs that the think may win the ESC.

I would like a chorus in English, to make the cleverness the middle guy talks about clear. As delightful as it is, if you don't know what the song is saying the gorilla just seems random rather than meaningful. If Francesca did it, why not Francesco?

Showing a so cheap vision of Italian music is really sad. Of course, this year at Sanremo was a bit weak, because there weren't masterpieces like "Il diluvio universale" (Annalisa) and "Ora o mai più" (Dolcenera) but Bianca Atzei or Alessio Bernabei would have been far better winners.

Cedric L are you saying that grande amore wasnt a clichéd italian song just like most of our entries? I mean it was not just clichéd, it was entirely based on italian stereotypes. three men singing opera-style about love: it was the stereotypical italian song taken to the extreme, at least in my opinion, and that's also why foreigners liked it better than italians did. You may not like Occidentali's Karma, which I personally consider an innovation in the italian escstory, and some other italian entries but from that to saying that il volo was the only "original" italian entry...

I don't really get the hype over it I mean yes it was the best one of the final 3 but the song...it's good but not great. Also I have to disagree, it's not really top 10 potential at all

Not a fan. I don't know what it is, but I find Gabbani kind of annoying. Also, the lyrics seem really disjointed to me, like he's just throwing words together. But I also have a more serious question about the song, as part of it's message is about how we appropriate elements of religions like Buddhism and Hinduism, which could fall under the category of "religious content," which EBU rules do prohibit.

Aisha in 2009 performed "What for?" and there was GOD in her lyrics, I don't see why Buddha should be a problem for Francesco Gabbani.

Actually the song isn't about Buddhism and Hinduism. The song is about western society, the video and the word "namaste" are used just for "fun" and to rapresent a contrast of society. It's a little bit difficult to explain to someone who can't understand the lyrics. But belive in me, the video and the lyrics aren't offensive to anyone.
