Great review. Personally, I love how Eddie defeated Blaine. I don't think King wrote himself into a corner. It's one of the rare times he really seemed to have a plan, because it is so clearly foreshadowed throughout book III, and it draws so directly from both Eddie and Blaine's flaws. Both Blaine and Roland take the game too seriously, and the resolution teaches Roland the value of humor. Being one of those people who had to wait years on that cliff, I thought it was a great payoff.

I think King took a really interesting approach to the extended universe thing. It mostly works, because he doesn't make it entirely necessary to read every book it references, but it doesn't really reward you all that much if you have. I read The Stand just because I heard it fit into The Dark Tower, and was very disappointed that it was only such a small mention. However, my consolation prize was that The Stand was incredible and I in no way regret having read it.

I enjoyed this book, it felt like a hazy dream. It was good to go back in time and see some of Roland’s past even if it was a little bit dragged out! I enjoyed the flashback of Eddie, his brother and his brothers friends when they’re talking about who’d they pick to fight for them, but yeah, strange end to Blaine the Mono! 6 years? Damn!! Great review, I’m looking forward to the next one! MY LIKE,… MY LIKE FOR YOOOOUUUU!!!

I actually really liked how they didn't do anything for like 100 pages. Halfway through that i thought to myself "we haven't heard things from Rolands perspective in a looong time" and i think that made it hit even harder when Cuthbert finally smacked some sense into him. Roland was literally lost and even the reader hadn't heard from him in a while. I think it was a good narrative trick.

The beginning (Blaine the mono dying from Eddie's "dad jokes") and the end (weird Wizard of Oz references) were corny, but I enjoyed the entire 600+ page middle - the flashback to Roland's teen years and events that shaped his life. Moving on to the next book in the series hoping for better...

Frikken awesome review, as always. This was an essential glimpse into Roland's past, and I truly found the death of Susan so tragic and so essential to our understanding of Roland the man in the present. I cannot believe the hate for this book, it is a wonderful addition to The Dark Tower series. Not necessarily one of my favorite, but an awesome read!

Really good review as always! This book had in my opinion some of the best villains in The Dark Tower series. Randall Flagg was fun to see in the end (gotta agree with you about the Tick Tock Man tho) and Rhea was a really well written villain. I do think Eldred Jonas however was my favorite villain in this book.

Hey! I'm still on ny journey and around 300 pages into Wolves Of The Calla! Wizard and Glass I did enjoy but you're right in saying prequels tend to suffer as we all knew Roland was going to be okay! Rhea definitely is one of Kings worst villians. She made my skin crawl. Felt the same about the wizard of oz bit and tik tock man! I'll definitely be watching your Wolves Of The Calla review! (hope you've done one) thank you for uploading these videos.. I love your passion and excitement so much! Also Trash Can man is brilliant!

It’s crazy you know, as a long time CR, I read the books in real time as they were released. I almost completely forgot about the series ( after wastelands) and just happened to be browsing books at a flea market with my wife and saw W and G just sitting there! I went home and read it over several days in a feverish delirium almost. It blew my mind!

I understand the wondering of the wizard of oz influence. I would remind you that other pre existing literature has already been used. Such as Shardik and Charlie the Choo Choo type book that foreshadows Blaine.
@PaperbackJourneys
@PaperbackJourneys Жыл бұрын
You know what Lawrence I thought about that! I was thinking... "is this claiming that Wizard of Oz was somehow influenced by this location?" That's a good point. Let me ask you though. Charlie the Choo Choo was not a real children't book right? I just looked it up and I see that it's published now, but I'm sure if was inspired by The Dark Tower and not the other way around?

Charlie the cho cho is Kings invention. But I figure it is just his version of The Little Engine That Could. Its so fun for me to watch someone experience this story the first time. Then I get to remember my awe when I did my first read

This book is like Berserk but in Stiven King's way... Roland have so many tragical events and you can even make a parallel between characters. Casca and Susana Delgado fate and how that affects Roland and Guts/ Roland's previous ka-tet and Gut's friends/ Rhea or Volter and Griffith... That dispair in those two strories....It's actually pretty shocking to me

This book was EXCRUCIATING for me because I did not care about Susan or baby roland. I did not care about their romance or thier baby. I did not care about the old ka-tet. I wanted back the one i watch form in the previoud books. This story BORED me and was hard to get through. I can remember reading it though bc I got a used book that reeked of cigarettes. Roland is trash and everyone in his ka-tet are/were better people than him. But roland doesn't have to be likable to be a good character.

I have a hard time listening to someone rate a SK book 3 out 5 who doesn't seem to understand the entire story, you re read them because there is no way to cover, remember and catch all of the small details he puts in his literature. Just because you do not understand something does not make it bad LOL. In my opinion not a great review at all....

Did you find 'The Gunslinger' tough reading? It took me a few attempts to finish it too. Id really recommend 'Kingslingers' podcast, it takes a first time reader through it and helps get to grips with the hazy way it's written. I use it to help me pick up things I miss as I'm not a close reader.😂 Oh and I wouldnt start here as it picks up instantly from Book3 and won't make any sense!

I'm not sure if I'd start with this book. I mean chronologically it's a prequel to The Gunslinger. I find it difficult to suggest the reading order before I've completed the series. The Gunslinger is my least favourite in the series so far if that helps at all.
