Hey guys! I've seen a LOT of comments on this video asking for advice to audition for Dorothy, so... as a newly-cast Dorothy, here's my best advice! 1. Judy Garland has a lovely, mature alto/mezzo voice, but that's not what all directors are looking for. Actually, many productions prefer a Dorothy whose voice is sweeter and sounds more innocent. So, if you HAVE that Garland voice, go all out! But if you don't, don't worry about it! Use YOUR natural voice, and it might be exactly what the directors are looking for. 2. In the Wizard of Oz movie, Judy Garland is 16, and she looks it. However, in the book, Dorothy is only 10 or 11. The age of Dorothy in your show will depend on what your directors want. Just keep that in mind when reading, singing, and finding out whether you got the role or not. 3. When reading, put your OWN spin on the lines. If you've seen the movie, odds are all those lines AND the way they were said are burned into your brain. But just because Garland or another actor says something a certain way doesn't mean that's the only way to say it. When I auditioned for The Wizard of Oz, the director said, "One line could earn you your part." This is true. Think about the lines you're reading and express them how YOU think Dorothy would. 4. Remember that Dorothy is a HUGE role. This version of the show is shorter, but in the version I'm doing, Dorothy has over 250 lines. If you're serious about auditioning for Dorothy, make sure you have the time and willpower to commit. GOOD LUCK! I really hope you get the role, but if you don't, I KNOW you'll have fun no matter what part you play!😊
