In the first film she showed just how much she cared about her friendship as she told Harry before he went to face Professor Querrel and when she got saved by Harry and Ron from the troll she got really glad when Ron said they were friends as she cried the entire day before that when Ron made fun of her as she wasn’t part of the friend circle of Ron and Harry she only made her presence known by butting in. She was an outcast because she was a know it all but she care for her friends deeply.

I understand why Ron doesn't move or hug him - but we can see a tear rolling down his face. He knows Harry better than anyone, better than even Hermione. And as much as Ron would want Harry to stay, and doesn't want to lose him, he knows that Harry is a selfless person, and nothing he could do or say would convince him to stay. Ron knows that as hard as it is, Harry is doing the right thing for everyone, like always. It would be selfish of Ron to try to make him stay. And Ron is never selfish with Harry. He's a true friend and a good person.

This trio is true friendship in a way that may not even exist in real life. We know without a doubt in this scene that both Ron and Hermione would have willingly walked with Harry to his death, despite the fact that it would likely mean their own deaths as well, just so he wouldn’t have to face it alone. Also, knowing that they think they are seeing and speaking to each other for the last time after everything they’ve been through together breaks my heart every time. Ron and Hermione were the first people Harry ever knowingly loved.

There wasn’t much time to get attached to his character, not even in OOTP. This was one of the biggest blunders of the series. The compromises of the 4th film made the 5th film’s most important scene not work.

All true, but the real reason Ron couldn’t hug Harry is because he’s still dealing with Fred’s death, which is still fresh in his memory. If Ron had given Harry his goodbye hug, he would’ve never let go. Losing his older brother (Fred) and his best friend (Harry) in such a short timespan would’ve broken Ron’s heart, especially if Ron gave Harry the goodbye hug he knew he couldn’t give, but desperately wanted to.

I don't think Radcliffe got enough credit for how much of a grasp that he had on Harry from the very beginning. Even in the first movie, he seemed to know how to play the part. While Hermione and Ron were more lively and animated, Harry was always more introverted and introspective and that's much more difficult to pull off as an actor, imo. Also, in the first film, unlike Ron and Hermione, Harry didn't have any experience or exposure to magic growing up, so throughout the movie, we saw Harry always amazed whenever someone would do magic. Radcliffe's facial expressions throughout Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone were spot on! lol

I've wondered that too, but honestly I think the look the two boys share is pretty meaningful too. They've hugged it out a lot in eight films, but this seemed deeper or more mature. I got the feeling that they were purposefully trying to keep it together, perhaps for Hermione's sake. I always wanted to add a line, something like, "Take care of each other." Some people are mad about Ron not hugging Harry, but I don’t know if you guys noticed, but a single tear falls down his cheek. Ron was Harry’s best friend from the very first day that he sat next to him on the Hogwarts express when they were eleven. He’s been Harry’s best friend and he knows him better than anyone, even Hermione. Harry knew everything he needed to from the way Ron looked at him. Ron was heartbroken at this scene, but he understand why Harry had to do it more than anyone except maybe Dumbledore. Ron knew there was nothing he could say that could change Harry’s mind. The most amazing thing is that any nonsense that wasn't in the book, people are ready to justify. To come up with a motivation and admire it No. No, no, no. Ron in the books wouldn't let Harry go. The ron in the books wouldn't stand still. The film once again mocks Ron.

aside from the addendums which the films made to slugworth’s character, this scene was my favorite departure from the canon of the books. particularly, this really gives hermione time to shine as a character-that she had deduced (but denied) the connection between harry and voldemort, and upon being confronted by its reality, says simply “I’ll go with you.” she acknowledges what must happen, and she doesn’t try to reason it away, she just doesn’t want harry to be alone, at the end. I think it really harkens back to their conversation in the first movie, about how friendship and loyalty are more important than cleverness. this felt like a full circle for her-i do sincerely wish that ron could have had more to do here, though.

I wish they had stuck to the book, because I don't think either of them would have let him go alone. But if they were going to do it this way, then it makes much more sense for Ron to be the one hugging him and asking to come with him, while Hermione is tearful but understanding. Canonically Ron was always the unswervingly loyal one who stuck by Harry well into his own life being in danger (especially in Prisoner and Order), while Hermione was better at remaining in sight of a larger goal. But their screenwriter stans Hermione and ships HH so, whatever, I guess. All three of them acted the hell out of this scene regardless.

Um, it was Hermione who was “unswervingly loyal.” Ron isn’t loyal - he’s insecure and abandoned Harry twice. Ron probably just stuck around so he could hang out with Hermione.
