I had no issue with UB cards until I realized they were going to be new, playable (ie: not silver or gold bordered), mechanically unique cards and not IP specific art for existing cards.

Yeah, I aboslutely loved the Godzilla cards, but I've hated how they've done UB cards since. Making them reskins is totally cool, I encourage it even. It's no different to a Masterpiece card in my opinion. Part of what angers me about the answers that we are always given about why they are continuing to do this, typically saying "we want to make a product that anyone can enjoy", is that if that were truly the case then they never would have gotten rid of the Godzilla Ikoria style of UB cards. Instead they've decided to keep the FOMO style they have now, which basically makes each new set a Reserve List set. They are hypocrites.

UB hater here. I genuinely don't have a problem with the Reskin method used with the Godzilla cards, with the crucial detail that the card being reskinned is also within the same set (looking at you Zilortha). I'll also admit I'm a hypocrite because I adore the Godzilla set. But thats probably because of a mix of nostalgia and the Reskin method.

I missed grabbing Doric when she came out. Instead of waiting forever for a reprint, I proxied it. Cost less than $1.50 in total. I'll use this method for most cards from now on. In my 12+ years of playing, I've never once played a sponsored event, never tried to pass my proxies as "the real thing," and never once had an issue with an LGS for my proxy play. I still contribute to my LGS in packs (occasional gambling) and singles (again-on occasion).

This isn't an acceptable design for "reskins". New players are not going to know that they are "reskins", Events and other players are going to see a lot of headaches with players using both forms. Having the true names under the "reskins" name is definitive for identification and for deck building accuracy.

I do not hate universe beyond cards. I really don't. I just hate how often they are done and when the property is not even close to the mtg setting and theme by any measure. Like witcher, dnd, lord of the rings and one could make the argument dr.who as well can fit but street fighter, transformers and spongebob................no. As for how often they should be once a year and no less. Focus on the game and mtg. Make new interesting planes and so on instead of shoving a random ip in the game.

@ i am being a little sarcastic, talking about the time wotc did that to someone, i more meaning how some of the people who hate UB are unreasonably angry about it. I hear people act like its the Hindenburg crash destroying Magic and that they will never pay a single cent to wotc ever again and just go 100% proxy uncaring that it would kill the game. I even met one person who threatened to just reach across the table to rip up people’s UB cards if he had to play against them, now most arent that crazy but still. I dont like having half the sets be UB but honestly they are becoming the only lore Magic has now. Sets have a short video with maybe five of the dozens of named cards from the set in it and a maybe twenty minute short story about the set.

Paused at 4:06 so unsure if you say this but here is my sentiment on it as someone who is excited for UB sets to hopefully help convince my friends to finally give this amazing game a shot. I think they already came up with the solution to this, and its mentioned in this video; the Godzilla cards. In the UB sets, have a guaranteed slot for a universes within reprint of one of the major cards for the collector packs, and a small chance to hit it in the play boosters. If you don't want to take away from the flavor of the universes beyond, reprint it in the next standard set with the new art and the name of the OG card underneath it.

I think what they could do but never would is offer something like the proxy shops offer. Give the option of print to order for a sheet. You chose the cards, max of one for each name, and no special treatments. So, one 11x11 sheet at a fixed cost and they are official cards.

I honestly believe that people don't hate UB, they just hate how poorly they implemented it and how pushed it is. If there was a UB set once or twice a year and they weren't full sets (like the AC set) and weren't standard legal they'd be perfectly fine

Yup, they did it right the first time around with the Godzilla cards in Ikoria. Just make it a reskin of an existing card, mention the OG card name on the new card, and boom, a perfect way to include new IP's to bring in new players. But they won't stop, especially after the LotR set.

Why not making an entire set called Universes within with all the reprints and they treat it as a MASTERS set? and they include reprints of the ones tthey already did plus the ones from Dr Who, LOTR, Fallout, Assassins Creed, ETC ETC but just with the new cards of each sets, For instances, the commanders, the one ring, the doctors... But why would you do something so silly as to put anything on a card that lets you determine what distinct gamepiece it is, after all the cardname is just an extra location for flavor text with todays cramped textboxes. I've already started selling my collection the last time, afaik at least, that they had someones kneecaps smashed for the crime of accidentally rrcieving a product early and everything I keep hearing from mtg is affirming me that it was the right descision.

Some people actually love Universes Beyond. It’s gotten many people into the game, to the point where now I regularly play against players at the LGS who are just running Universes Beyond Precons because they like the IPs. Are you willing to let your hate lock out players that would otherwise be in the game? What ever happened to this community calling for it being more open to new players, with good reprints and things to make it more affordable? This works in the same way.

It feels awful to sit across from someone playing a Street fighter deck with a Transformer player next to them when everyone before got into the game because of the unique characters and storylines. If having the game turn into Fortnite means new players, I'd rather the game die off.

And here we go, magic doesnt know what is Ub, we dont know what is UB but were still gonna blindly complain cause FF/DW bad but gluck gluck dnd so good. Expecting UW for everything is mindless and dumb else your complaints about it really boil down to magics multiple planes in general. For example the one ring. You can play it now. It's literally just a golden circle. Saying that youre waiting for UW reprint is like saying you're waiting for an innistrad reprint of ghalta so you can play it in your innistrad deck. Or a new phyrexia reprint of avacyn. What if i want realistic and natural looking dinosaurs and dont want to use zacama. What am i gonna do? Wait for a scientifically accurate reprint? No im gonna use the Jurassic Park secret lair. Or ravenous tyrannosaurus. Like a functioning human being who doesnt live in a magic goon circle jerk jar. Actor face complains are even worse. What if i dont want furry in magic. What if i want mable to be human? What if i dont like tefari. What if i think hed look better designed after rdj or Samuel Jackson? What if i dont want sorins stupid face on a card? Its like complaining that you dont want any star wars actors face in the films cause it breaks your immersion and instead they should be played by the actors of the clone wars. Tbh i hope we get a grand tour, ford mustang or Jeremy Clarkson secret lair and it continues to force people who think like this out. Would make the whole game a far more welcoming and less cum mouthed place.

I know I’m in the minority but I don’t care about UW, I prefer UB. Maybe it’s cause I remember the first sets and the fact that they didn’t have any lore behind them so when they added lore it felt strange and convoluted. UB typically has better conceived character and story to me, since they were stories and characters before cards and not the other way around.

@@spec-opsteve756 it’s very interesting hearing an OG player’s opinion on this. Honestly I think we (those who like Universes Beyond) are actually the silent majority. You don’t see it much on this channel because he’s pretty well driving a lot of us away with how he talks about it, but I see people playing with Universes Beyond all the time at my LGS and no one cares. It’s actually popular, and that’s echoed by WotC saying these are some of their best selling sets of all time, beyond just the madness over LOTR from the One Ring.

@ This vid is in no way doomsday crying. He was reporting and sharing his opinion on something about the game he is passionate about that he doesn't agree with. All he was saying was that it took to long to get the universe within cards and how they are doing it is shit. Wizards saw the commander base wanted these cards so chose to give them away in a very limited way, via LGS for ltd events. While LGS love is great (he even said so) It forces players to go to an event for a format they might not even like to get hold of these cards. They would be more available via a SL drop. All its done is create fake FMO for profit.

That is an interesting point I hadn’t thought of. Cards like pithing needle are going to only get more and more confusing as time goes on.
