I recall a similar incident a few years back when Take Two sent hired goons to a KZbinr's house for accidentally leaking Borderlands 3 footage. Newer MTG product is sent out in brown boxes with almost no indicator of what's inside, and to make it worse both the regular and aftermath sets have almost similar packaging, so even if you open it up, unless you're up to date on MTG products, you wouldn't know what you had.

If the distributor conducted a transaction where they took payment for the cards, how is that any different than any other vendor delivering an order? And how does that undermine the original point to begin with? I buy and sell these cardboard rectangles as a primary source of income, I've been watching this like a hawk since the day it happened and I've been waiting to see if a suit gets filed, because all of the customer facing information from WotC would suggest that it's all legit.... until they hired the fucking pinkertons to shake the guy down.

Not entirely true. It was the retailer and distributor that provided the wrong product. Wizards had nothing to do with it. That being said, there are better ways Wizards could have handled this but "their mistake?" It was not their mistake. It was distribution.

They actually don't know what happened, thus the private investigation. Some random guy had unreleased product 2 weeks early. Some store might have sold it to him early or on accident (though I don't think stores even get them that early for this exact reason ), or he got them from someone who stole them from manufacturing /distribution point. Store accidently selling the product early is super sus as well cause you know... Product codes and what not. Game stores track all that stuff like crazy.
