The very idea of a film like Wizards made it into theaters is just phenomenal. Love Ralph Bakshi for pushing the boundaries of cinema.
@JayRidders
@JayRidders Жыл бұрын
Yeah, screw those executives who meddled with Cool World for making Bakshi quit film. That’s what happens when artists in animation are taken for granted. Another example being Richard Williams, who worked hard on The Thief and The Cobbler for nearly 3 decades, but near the end of production, he was booted from the project, and it destroyed his career. As an appreciator of the arts with big ambitions, I dream of a world in the industry where artists’ works are seen not as quick money, but as true art, and that executives tamper less with the original vision of the artists, unlike what Calvert and Completion Bond did to Williams’ life’s work. As long as there are still people who view animation as art, these hopes for the future of the industry will live on!

1977 was also the year of "Cinderella", the soft-core musical version starring Cheryl Smith. With a black, gay "fairy godmother" and songs that are actually...great! Has to be seen to be appreciated. It was a different time for sure.
@bassplayer10

It was a different time. My father took me to see “The Lord of the Rings” in the theater. I was 8, then again in ‘81 for “American Pop”, which nurtured the already growing need to rock. Taking me to see The Who in ‘82 (Chicago, 12 y/o) sealed the deal. He’s still unable to connect the dots and likes to criticize my pursuit of something other than money. What was i saying? Ralph Bakski. Brilliant.

You got to admit, the animation is limited but the concept is what I love the most of this film, nuclear war destroys humanity and the magical creatures that have been force to live underground regain the earth once again. Then an evil wizard rediscovers human technology and the nazi party (which he probably doesn't even know what they were) to battle against creatures that live in a new medieval world.

If I remember correctly, Wendy Pini worked on this film(and was probably inspired by it), and then went on to create Elfquest.

I remember seeing this movie as a small child, and thinking it was a fever dream. i flipped the fuck out when i saw a clip of it on youtube. like "HOLY SHIT THE MEMORY WAS REAL!?". Had to rewatch it immediately. What a great film, though the message is a bit heavy handed, and muddled by the hero arguably killing his brother in cold blood. But hey, its from the 70s, that decade ain't known for subtlety.

Heh. I must've been 5 when I saw it. I still have memories of bits and pieces floating around. Star Wars was a lot more memorable though.

In San Antonio Texas a local theater back in the day used to do a sci-fi film festival. They would always play this and "The Lord of the Rings." I remember people would get stoned between films. Those were the good old days.

The experimental nature of the animation is the same in most of Bakshis work... I love it! Nice mix of rotoscope and collage but definitely a culture shock seeing so many meshing styles
