Star Wars: Thrawn Campaign from the Legends

Wizards and Warriors Channel sci-fi animated documentary lore video series on the Star Wars galaxy will continue with the second episode on the Galactic Civil War, as in the aftermath of the battle of Scarif ( • Battle of Scarif - Gal... ) the rebel alliance got its hand on the Death Star plans uncovering its weakness. After of the destruction of Alderaan, Princess Leia Organa assisted by Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO brought it to the alliance leadership with Darth Vader, Wilhuff Tarkin and the Death Star in pursuit, which led to the famous battle of Yavin ( • Battle of Yavin - Gala... ). The victory at Yavin allowed the Rebels to find new allies in Mon Calamari and their Mercantile fleet helped them create their fleet. However, the empire was still hunting the Rebels, which led to the battles of Vrogas Vas and Mako-to, where the Empire regained ground ( • Rebels Build a Fleet -... ), forcing the rebels into the Mid Rim Retreat which led to the battle of Hoth in 3 ABY ( • Battle of Hoth - How I... ). In the aftermath of Hoth, the rebels were forced to continue their retreat, but various groups like the 61st Mobile Infantry (Twilight Company) continued fighting the Empire, leading to the strategically important battle of Inyusu Tor on the planet Sullust ( • What Happened between ... ). With these minor victories, the Rebels, who learned that the Emperor is building a new Death Star, had a new opening to attack the Empire, which led to the battle of Endor ( • Battle of Endor - Gala... ). Emperor Palpatine died during the battle of Endor, but he had ordered Operation Cinder beforehand. This operation was emperor's revenge, as he wanted to destroy both the rebels, who killed him and the imperials who failed to protect him. Then infamous Shadow Wing was in charge of portions of this operation and was countered by the Republics Alphabet Squadron and the Barma Battle Group under Hera Syndulla. Their confrontation led to the battles of Pandem Nai, Cerberon and Troithe ( • Operation Cinder - Emp... ). The final battle of the Galactic Civil War would be fought near Jakku, as the New Republic finally found a way to end the empire ( • Battle of Jakku - End ... ). But that was not the end of the story. The empire dissolved in many factions and among them, grand admiral Thrawn arrived to the scene, becoming the heir of the empire. Both the New Republic and the Grand Admiral were now looking for the Katana Fleet - two hundred Dreadnaught-class heavy cruisers launched by the Galactic Republic during its final decades of existence, as part of an attempt to restore the Republic Navy to its long-gone glory . Taking the fleet, allowed Thrawn to expand his operations and threaten the New Republic even more, leading to the battle of Qat Chrystac and eventually Bilbringi.

As a kid we called the Thrawn Trilogy the sequels that were never made. Heir to the Empire is as iconic to me as A New Hope. Other people can feel what they feel, but for me the original Thrawn Trilogy is the true sequel. Always will be for me.

@@wargamesmaster his only real mistake. Ruhk had been Thrawn's bodyguard since 9 BBY. He knew something was up with the Noghri but not that they had turned completely on him. He thought knowing his bodyguard for 17ish years meant he could predict him. But the Noghri are always an enigma.

Well if you look at the Essentials Altas Galaxy map, you would see that wayland has the tiniest border strip of the expansion and mid rim between it and the literal main blob of the inner rim underneath it… So W&W map is fine.. Showing the Truly awful border gore in this area would just confuse more people and be a pain to edit.. 😂 These are generalize videos, made to be digestible to new and old fans..

The funniest thing about Legends Thrawn is that had he won, the galaxy wouldve actually known peace. His Empire of the Hand was actually beneficial and Pellaeon's remnant were good guys who actually had the full support of the planets they controlled. And the Yuuzhan Vong wlaked all over the New Republic. Thrawn would have destoryed thrm.

Unfortunately that's not accurate. If Thrawn had 'won' he still would have had to face the Imperial Warlords and Reborn Emperor, all of which vastly outgunned him. On top of that, C'baoth had gone fully rogue and if Mara hadn't killed him, he'd have taken Thrawn's entire clone military away from him as he had duped Thrawn into underestimating him. C'baoth could mentally dominate and replace another's mind with copies of his own through the Force and he did this to Thrawn's greatest general in a single day. He could do that to the twenty templates Thrawn used at Wayland and that would allow him to take over all the Clones from there Thrawn had cranked out at will. Plus Thrawn didn't actually do anything to mitigate anti alien discrimination in the main Empire, nor discrimination against women. He was perfectly fine with using terror and oppression to obtain his end goals. If Thrawn won his campaign, Palpatine never would have allowed him to remain in charge of the Empire, nor would the Warlords have tolerated him. It would have been the Imperial Mutiny all over again. Thrawn himself would have perished in the first years after Endor if he hadn't been fortunate enough to be in the Unknown Regions to miss the main parts of the Imperial Civil War.

@grandadmiralzaarin4962 Thrawn had contingencies in place for C'Boath. I'm pretty sure he could have handled him. I also think he would have easily coralled the Imperial Remnant and warlords. His reputation was strong enough they wouldn't have crossed him. What would have happened with Palpatine is another question altogether. It depends on how much Thrawn knew of his planned resurrection and if he could account for it. He didn't hate the Jedi and would have accepted a New Republic surrender. Combine those forces and he would have been well positioned to top even Palpatine's fleet, which let's face it, was led poorly. And he definitely did mitigate alien discrimination. The stormtroopers of the Empire of the Hand allowed aliens to join them. This got overhauled a bit in later media where now the empire always allowed certain species, but originally Thrawn was the only imperial to allow aliens to serve. He'd have been perfectly placed to continue that.

He originally thought the ysalamiri and manipulation would keep him in check and that C'baoth would never be able to meld his raw power with long term concentration. Thrawn was wrong on both counts. C'baoth showed how easily he could kill someone in a ysalamiri bubble if he wanted to on Jomark. He proved he could hijack ships at will and maintain that control, then he learned how to literally create long term copies of his own mind to replace others around him. Thrawn BADLY underestimated C'baoth. Him sending Covell and a group of his best troops to Wayland with C'baoth to take control of a facility with 20,000 Ysalamiri in place WAS Thrawn's contingency plan, and C'baoth took over Covell's mind(probably the troopers too), managed to destroy the ysalimiri and take over the facility all without Thrawn having the slightest clue he could, or would, do that. Thrawn also had no idea what C'baoth had planned for how to take over his entire clone army. You also very much underestimate the Warlords. Each of them wouldn't sit for someone else on the Throne. Palpatine himself had to weaken them significantly with the Imperial Mutiny and years of internecine civil war on top of having his own armada of superweapons just to get them to briefly fall in line. Thrawn's own Coalition was very fragile, Ardus Kaine held back most of his military from Thrawn, same with Delak Krennel's Ciutric Hegemony as did the Moffs and Ruling Council for their own political squabbles and rivalries. Thrawn was meant to be a figurehead for them, they deeply resented his successes as it jeopardized their own personal power. The Warlords as well at this time had a combined might of around twelve Star Dreadnoughts, thousands of warships and near innumerable soldiers. Add to that Thrawn's intent to rule the Empire and his plans to grow more C'baoths for a Force Order raised to serve his Empire on top of the Ysalamiri adn Palpatine flat out saw him as a rival and wanted him sabotaged and dead. Led poorly or not, many of the Superweapons had no viable answer. The World Devastators alone would have been unstoppable, supported by the Eclipse and the armadas of the Warlords and Byss, the New Republic and Thrawn had nothing close to rivaling that. I'm speaking specifically of his actions in the mainline Empire. Not only did Thrawn NOT reverse the existing High HuMAN culture recruiting standards, but he regularly treated other alien races exceptionally poorly, like the Noghri(whom he manipulated, exploited, terrorized and mocked, even laughing at their 'trust' in him) I suggest rereading the Thrawn trilogy again, Thrawn is not a good guy. He regularly breaks his word, he makes war on civilians, he terrorizes his Noghri and he is out for control. Zahn's later attempts to whitewash Thrawn are about as disconnected from how he actually was as the Lost Cause Myth was to the South seceding in the American Civil War.

Orbital bombardment which is something he would use without hesitation if things got too bad. Tell me, would you have rather him drop troops on the ground of coruscant and fight? Which would have led to the deaths of millions? Good idea though maybe a bit obvious. Thrawn would have crushed the NR, either forcing a surrender or negotiating a peace by explaining his real motoves and the threat of the Vong. In either case he would become the leader of a defacto military dictatorship, which would unite as much of the Galaxy as possible, unifying the Empirial Remnant, New Republic, Empire of the Hand and Chiss Ascendency. Consequently Thrawn would optimise supply lines, bureaucratic proceedure and begin arming the Galaxy for the eventual Vong invasion. His old sleeper cells would be reactivated and expanded. If Republican and Empire officials could be convinced of the threat, they'd likely be welcomed into his government and military, including Leia, Ackbar, Palleon, Fel and Antilles. Battle strategies and contengiency plans would be developed and drilled on, with new and improved weapon systems providing the necessary firepower. Populations would be prepared for planetary invasions and massive refugee waves.

One has to wonder if the New Republic could have defeated Thrawn eventually had he not been killed a Bilbringi. My theory is yes, if it was just Thrawn and his forces, especially since his clones were lost and as he took worlds his line stretched, but it wasn't going to be just Thrawn for much longer. The Pentastar Alignment had contributed some ships to Thrawn and after an Imperial victory at Bilbringi, probably would have joined him. They also had an Executor-Class Super Star Destroyer. Imagine what Thrawn could have done with that. I hope Timothy Zahn writes an Alternate Universe where Thrawn dismisses Rukh after losing faith in the Noghri and therfor is not killed by him.

I'm just imagining a possible future in Canon, where the Imperial remnant factions are discussing amongst one another yet again, just like they did in the Mandalorian. And with Pellaeon present as well. Then the question of Thrawn gets brought up again like "And what about Thrawn, Pellaeon? You've so often said his return is imminent and that he will solve all our problems, yet where is he?!?" Only for Pellaeon to slightly smile a bit and step to the side as Thrawn comes fourth, dominating the entire meeting with his immense presence. Silencing everyone only by his visual appearance. And Thrawn just calmly saying: "My apologies, I was a bit delayed. But now that I am here and have gotten a understanding of the state of the galaxy, I think it is high time we tested the New Republic's mettle. We are low on resources, ships and manpower, weaknesses that we'll have to live with for now. Our strength lies in making our enemy believe we are disorganized, sloppy and weak. We'll condition them into viewing my return as a joke and of no danger to them at all. Until we are ready, where we will hit them with so much force so quickly that they won't have time to recuperate. And before they know what hit them, we'll already have created an heir to the Empire."

I'm not that big into Star Wars but when I heard the line about trying to turn Thrawn into a puppet leader, I audibly laughed out loud. Even I know enough about him to know that was a ridiculous idea that was never going to work. What if idea for thrawn. Thrawn gains access to all projects related to replicating m-counts in cloning and upon returning from his exile, due to having aged so much he utilizes the technology and night sister magik to create a force sensitive clone of himself, and have his essence transferred. This thrawn would instantly become a rival to even sidious himself. Because even if he’s not as powerful in the force as sidious, his superior intelligence and strategic mind would be capable of using his new abilities in ways that no Jedi or sith has even thought of before. I don’t think he would even use a lightsaber or force lightning. He would simply use the standard abilities in extremely interesting and sinister ways.

Everyone acts like Thrawn is a unique individual.... meanwhile I see him as a typical us army officer from the period which I served and his death wouldn't have stopped anything and the progress which he achieved would only continue because the leadership style and inclusive nature would make the removal of anyone irrelevant to the accomplishment of the final objective and the way, means and path of getting there.... when no one realized the operations officer was killed because his humvee took an RPG because the staff continued to do everything without him it took until taking Baghdad international airport to realize he was gone and the brigade was being ran (operationally) by a Sargent and a couple of junior enlisted soldiers.....
