Kiyoshi Kimura I don't think you know why they were clapping.It had nothing to do with with turbulence all to do with a majority of people onboard that flight returning home to their homeland, perhaps after years of being away! It's a joyous occasion. Whenever a flight landed in Portugal when I was young, the Portuguese immigrants clapped with joy..Oh the good old days!

I remember flying to Cuba one time and we were just flying over the straits of Florida right through a small storm. At one point the left engine briefly gave out sending people flying all over the place and while I was buckled in, I still nearly hit the ceiling. We fell at least 1km before the pilots regained control. Now that was some scary shit.

Alex Penney That's the worst, because when you're landing you just want to get off and go home. Horrible feeling. I've landed at Gibraltar and that was a bit harrowing.
@heatherstub8 жыл бұрын
+importedmusic Sometimes, it's even more dangerous to do that, especially if there's windsheer close to the ground. When you have one column of fast, rising air and another column of rapidly descending cold air, you get windsheer, and this can actually bring a plane down. It's much safer to avoid trying to land at that point. Yeah, it's scary, but the pilot has trained in some of the most horrifying situations and knows what's best for the passengers. Still, I've been through a similar situation, and I had a Guide Dog sitting on the floor, and I had my legs firmly holding her shoulders and her leash clipped to my seatbelt just in case she became airborne.

I traveled from Geneva to Warsaw at the same period of time, on August 16 2015. We went through a region of strong thunderstorms over Germany, there were about 30 minutes of the strongest turbulence I have ever experienced. The plane was shaking terribly, the parts of the plane were squeaking loudly like there were about to break off. Our Embraer made a dozen of very deep and frightening dives in the air before we were able to get out from the clouds.

The only reason they were scared is not the turbulence but the retraction if the ground spoilers, the airbus aircraft make an angle correction when they are deployed and retracted to retain the best profile for flight, the retraction if spoilers at lower speeds causes the nose to go down a bit, which gives a temporary falling feeling, it’s all normal procedure and normal plane behavior, but some people don’t get it, it’s basic on the spot physics... I guess not in the current times
@brycecarlson33955 жыл бұрын
Nothing. Actual heavy turbulence is when you’ll hit the ceiling if you’re not buckled it. Happens from time to time if you rack up a few million miles flown. My dad had a fellow passenger hit the ceiling when his seatbelt wasn’t on from a thunder clap (lightning strikes below the aircraft, heating the air, an expansion process. The air cools and consequently all the air contracts back in, including the patch of air the airplane is traveling though)
