They also fought for the freedom of religion. King Billy believed in freedom of religion.

@RobertK1993 wow thats a lot wrong 1. King William did believe in freedom of religion and religious tolerance as shown in HIS treaty of Limerick ( that was ignored by English parliament) and his own Dutch Republic. 2. King James didnt really, he was wishy washy, he tried to overthrow Presbyterian church as the national Church of scotland and make the Anglican Church the national Church. King James at first did, but changed overtime and attempted to impose what could be considered Lite-Penal laws before he fled his throne. Remember he was a dictator and could change his mind at any minute. Basically when he realised he wouldn't get unquestioning loyalty he was all religious tolerance.

I'll never forget l was up in Derry busking on August 12th 1999 with my guitar and amp,l had come from Dublin, being completely ignorant of the actual Marching Season dates for Derry (thinking Marching was always 12th July Province wide) Anyway l played under a stone bridge near the Foyle centre l believe, loud, rock guitar but l was'nt singing, the Problem was that the 12th of AUGUST is when Derry marches So Town was completely Orange that day! These two gorgeous Protestant girls passed by me covered in orange boas and not much else but with two massive Orange Bodybuilder guys and demanded " the Sash" on the spot. I actually knew it very well as l am an amateur historian and devour anything on the Siege ( l can even name all 13 Apprentice Boys off by heart) l knew they knew l was a Catholic even though l said as little as l could and if they heard my Dublin accent l was probably in for a serious beating or even Death by stabbing ( this was 1999!) but l began to play a Slow, Sorrowful heartfelt version of the "Sash" getting faster and faster til the two girls were dancing, more Protestants gathered and l even played " Men of Harlech" for a Welsh guy that was there. The stabbing never came but the money flowed! not even a beating, even got some five pound notes off them! played the " Sash" three times in a row,it was probably the closest l have ever come to Death but l turned it to my advantage, l have to say they were really good People in the end.

On the 12th of august the orangemen come over the bridge, they do a few laps of the walls , wave their flags and then scurry back over to the waterside. Seeing as the city side of the Foyle is overwhelming Catholic and nationalist, they don’t hang about for too long. So I’m pretty sure you were safe enough.
