Genuine question, how do you guys decide what to give first listens to vs. pre-listening and deciding to react later? Do you pre-listen to all your first listens to decide whether it's channel worthy or go in blind? I used to love watching this channel for EXO-related reactions but it seems like each new release is being thrown away...

weareoneEXOL Yes, I pre-listen to all albums that I’m not confident that I’ll have a lot to say about in a reaction (Day6 and AKMU being the only artists who I have never had to prelisten to to make sure I have a positive reaction on camera.) My process for deciding what to react to personally is similar to how I decide on what songs to react to on the Classical Musicians React series, except it’s based purely on what /I/ find interesting in music. For EXO’s recent albums I didn’t find too many things interesting that kept my attention for the full length of the songs, so I’ve been passing on doing a first listen to them. (I however did record my Baekhyun Delight album “reaction” but as a behind-the-scenes video for how I listen to music off-camera: www.patreon.com/posts/38249297)

For anyone interested Tra-la's Korean title '불꽃놀이'(bul-kkot-nor-i/bul-kkot-nol-i) means fireworks. 불꽃 (bul-kkot) is already a compound word itself 불 (bul) meaning fire and 꽃 (kkoch/kkot) meaning flower; combined they mean flame (as flames look like a flower made of fire apparently). 놀이 (nol-i/nor-i) means 'game' or 'play'. So a flame-game is fireworks in Korean. Add.: As pointed out nicely in a reply to this comment each word in this compound word is Native Korean and not Sino-Korean as I first stated before changing this comment. (Though in Chinese 火花 - huo3hua1 consisting of the character for fire and the one for flower means something like spark. That is not the same as flame but suggests maybe a common origin.)

As I am learning Japanese (and slowly Chinese) as well, I projected the possibility of writing the Chinese pronounciation and the Native pronounciation with the same Chinese character from Japanese to Korean. Thanks for pointing out that flaw in my explanation.

this album is great; equal parts weird and mainstream, willing to experiment without sacrificing basic pop sensibilities. and yeah, WJSN seems to be content w making summer albums -ballads, which I'm all for (even though they all have amazing voices). last year's for the summer has become an essential Kpop summer album, and I'm sure this project will end up being one of my favorites of the year as well. I've listened to pantomime over ten times and it's still shocking every single time, and to me that's what makes it so great. it's hard to believe it exists on the same album as butterfly and hola, and that's one of the reasons why this album is so interesting

Highlights of Pantomime (imo) 6:11 wth is going on in this intro. it kind of sounds like a flickering streetlight but intensified. love the eerie vibe 6:18 the "ding" and the immediate contrast with Dawon's magical vocals wow 6:33 the syncopated video gamey synth syncing with Exy's rap was great 6:48 minor and Dayoung's vocals o my 6:56 love the way Luda holds and then releases the "teu" sound in sync with the beat drop 7:12 she goes a half step lower on "pant" 7:20 changes the vocal melody by going a half step higher on "pant" 7:28 half time 7:35 Seola's vocals here wow. Love the varying range/rhythms of the vocals. 7:43 pause of the year 8:24 half time and minor this is so hypnotic 8:46 loved this buildup from the really snarly sample and the percussion coming in on the up beat plus electric guitar for a split second low key thought they were going into dreamcatcher rock lol 8:51 THIS KEY CHANGE RIGHT HERE OFFICER. also someone make Umu's expression here into a meme haha love how the bass synth evolves into a more keyboard sounding dance synth and then back to bass during the beat drop 9:29 half time low key afraid they were gonna add some crazy spasm of sound at the end from the subdivisions to the samples to the key changes this song was an absolute rollercoaster and so much respect to the producer

The first sound in Pantomime reminds me of the BRAAAM in Inception. Edit: after reading the lyrics, I'm fully committing to the theory that this song is about Inception! "It's stopped in the castle of tribute and there's no sound I'm trapped inside a fantasy island, leave it like this for a while A new universe unfolding in front of our eyes Pause, two shadows on the stage, Black and white background where only we are the main characters, there will never be our sad epilogue"

AOTY for me personally even if I don't really enjoy Butterfly that much. Hola would have been a way superior summer title track choice imo. Also pantomime is perfect in basically every way, the changes in music compliment to the drama and "pantomime" aspect perfectly. I could imagine whole scenes and visuals just from how crazy that song is.

Pantomime is so freaking amazing .... amazing, mind blowing chords , amazing melody , amazing harmonies , amazing details , amazing everything .....I was shook from the start to the end ... I'm not ujung BUT I think they did the biggest mistake for releasing this as a bside .... I don't mean that it should've been the title instead of butterfly , that song is amazing too ... but I think they should've kept it and released it as a title track later , many people are not going to hear this ... it could've gotten so much attention IF it was a title .. one of those billboard critics would've listened to it and mentioned it at the end of the year ... they could've gotten so many new fans ..... Starship .... I hate you 😂.... anyways , this made me curious since I heared the chorus in the album's preview , it drew me to listen to the whole album , and I ended up discovering a group with an amazing discography .... the whole album is LIT .. ( pantomime is Alice in wonderland for sure ! ) And also , about the beautiful mess before the third chorus , that is the MOST creative key change I've ever heard in my whole life ... the most interesting thing about the song is that the shocking changes are SO smooth and don't feel weird at all ! The song is weird, but in a good way !

I had a feeling that the bridge of pantomime was in C locrian! I'm not sure if the little B natural in there is enough to debunk that theory but the notes being used otherwise, assuming C is the root, are all within the locrian scale, and the idea that any part of a modern pop song would be written in locrian is mindblowing to me. I just love that the song has sections of different modes in it, being natural minor overall with some major hits and the chorus being phrygian all followed by that possibly locrian bridge.

Oh, this was so good!! Since the release of Butterfly MV I've been jamming the album and I still am!! It's so freaking good, Hola is my favorite but Pantomime is a close second, I also wanted Hola to be the title track, but overall the whole album deserves to be listened way more!!
