kessang dikkila I’m a Japanese but I’ve never heard of that. As far as I know, we generally can select one martial art like judo, kendo etc when we are junior high or high school student and period of curriculum is limited. Of course, some people starts to learn it since they are little kid not as school curriculums.

Of course both teams were excellent: balanced, strong, exact and both had really good bunkai. It would have been difficult to judge, except the Japanese team was so exact in its bunkai and control. Those kicks came so close it was amazing. Japan did choose Unsu, which is less-known to many viewers than Gangaku (Chinto), and that may have also given them an edge.

why don't both teams do the same kata? that way the playing field would be leveled and the judging would be fairer. how could you judge squarely first and second if both teams did completely different things?? they would only be assessed on their own merit, not against each other.

You wouldn't say that two artists must paint the same painting, or two singers sing they same song, so that you could make a judgement about which is better. In the final analysis, Karate is the winner.
@HesteBremse

On this level in-depth understanding of the art is part of it - So interpretations, creative solutions, variations are what makes one group/school stand out over another. Naturally, all the basics are expected to be top notch. When you see other sports/arts with synchronized movement that is also a matter of how advanced a team can go while maintaining their synchronicity - even for single performances there is always some choices - go double, or go triple and risk failing etc. But @Keiran already explained it very nicely.

You can see the difference during the first part. The Japanese team has been perfect meanwhile Italians made some mistakes but.. During the second part none of the two parts has done better than the other. My idea is that the Italian coach had the feeling that Japan team was preparing 'fire works' for the final and so chose a very different kata and combat. I personally liked much more the combat part executed by the Italians. It was so realistic. My opinion.

I have no idea regarding Karate, but I can feel that Italy team aren't no joke, but the Japanese team is something else, power, commitment and spirit are like a different level @_@

Japan revenged the final match in 2010. Japan had different team and final kata for 2012, while Italy kept same team and same kata in both 2010 and 2012.

Bruce Levine Actually i'm first place in SKF World Championship - cadets. And i won with Gankaku over Unsu. Unsu is not better than Gankaku they are on the same level. The only place in Unsu to lose balance is at the jump. While in Gankaku you can lose balance in a lot of moves. You need much more concentration and balance for Gankaku. Btw the Japan team was better no doubt.

The first thing I saw is that the patch on the belt was on the opposite side to the guy in the center. Great performance.
