This is WEP case looks like: Persons have been required to deposit money into a housing contractor's accounts for years to save enough for the contractor to build a house for them. The contractor every year shows his customers the draft of the house designs and money accumulated in each account of his customers. When time is come, the contractor starts to build the houses for his customers. However, he completes only half job done of each house for his customers in contrary to his promise. The customers are upset and want to take legal actions. But the contractor told them that they can't do anything because it is the law of the land passed in 1983. So the customers shocked and awful... Now the customers hope that the law is repealed and forcing the contractor to finish the other half of the house...

This report did not do a deep dive into the legislation. It effects only those who in addition to having a type job where social security was not withheld and also have at least 10 years (40 quarters) working at another job where they paid into social security. Under this scenario their SS benefits as well as their surviving spouse benefits have been cut by up to 66%. With WEP and GPO repealed full SS benefits commensurate with what they paid in to SS will be restored. It is expected to cost 190 billion for ten years shortening the timeframe that social security is expected to be broke by 6 months. Its a big deal for a small group of people who have been cheated out of their retirement benefits by the federal government.

WEP reduces over half of my legally and lawfully supported Social Security benefits. I contributed to Social Security working 20 years in private education, and I contributed to a teachers’ pension working 24 years in public education. WEP eliminates over half of the SS from the 20 years of teaching. The GPO eliminates all spousal benefits, so if my spouse predeceases me, the GPO negates any benefits that others would receive. The newscasters, unfortunately, did not explain the HR 82 accurately, hinting that folks who did not pay into SS would not receive it. That is inaccurate.

A lot of police, firefighters and teachers had to work additional jobs just to stay in their profession. I am a retired teacher who paid in to Social Security well over the 40 quarter minimum requirement in addition to my teacher pension. I have been retired 8 years and have been penalized approximately 66% of my earned Social Security benefit during this period of time. Meanwhile my teacher retirement does not do yearly COLA’s. So I have a lot less purchasing power today than I had when I retired. The expert they interviewed on this video was very accurate. However, the anchors made numerous mistakes as listed in other comments.

I would say that most of us had other full-time jobs before we got the jobs that did pay Social Security the point is we paid our Social Security and WEP took 2/3 of it. No one is gonna get money that was taken from WEP if they didn’t pay Social Security I paid in enough to earn $1000 a month of Social Security, but the WEP took 600 a month of that I also paid into Medicare my whole life so there is nobody that’s gonna get the wEP money who is getting money they didn’t earn in fact I’m happy they’re gonna give me a year of backpay, but that won’t make up for the five years of Social Security money. I will never get back that I paid Into and you’re talking about never getting it maybe for you while there are people who lived and died and it was never fixed in their lifetimeso you should know more about this before you talk about it on the news

No. I worked 25 years full-time paying INTO SS and my deceased husband worked full-time 43 years paying into SS. Later in life I worked in a school and earned a small pension. So, being a widow I lose ALL of the SS I paid for 25 long years. Then SS deducts 2/3 of my pension from my late husband's who died at 59 and never got to collect. So, I have lost all my SS and most of his due to GPO, so yeah, I will now get the SS my husband earned and never collected. SS IS now going to be FAIR.
@Po1itica11yNcorrect9 сағат бұрын
@CAT-pi1he That's my point. Get rid of the Government Pension Offset. As far as repealing the WEP, doing so punishes those of us who paid Substantial Earnings into Social Security and were close to the 30 years needed to not have the WEP nagstively affect us. Now, after all those years, REPEALING the WEP punishes those like me. Because I worked two jobs (70-80 hours a week for decades), made more money because of it, and will make less in SS as soon as they tweak the SSFA before 2033, and I'll get less than the 80% I was going to get under the WEP formula.
