At the very least it’s an outrageous decision from the ref. Rui Costa nearly scored in the same minute, was in the German box walking back. The sub gets announced at 74.30 and he gets a second card at 74.55 already outside the pitch… It’s very hard to think this wasn’t deliberate.

At 74:12 Rui Costa is shooting a ball on target (inside the german box), and at 74:39 (less than 30 seconds later) the ref is already pulling the card and calling for him to show him the card. No one will ever convince me this wasn't intentional. It was a counscious intentional decision specifically designed to force Portugal not win the game.

the only time Rui Costa was sent off in his entire career and it was the most bizare sent off ever... the french referee wanted Germany in World Cup of France 98, and if Portugal win this they would not go World Cup... Portugal was a very talented team allready in 97, latter in 2000 they do semi-finals of European Cup, and this generation had 5 or 6 players with really high internacional reputaion, like FIgo, Rui Costa, Paolo Sousa, Conceicao, Couto, and joao pinto who was very underrated during his entire career

Head to head records were only introduced for the European Championships (starting with Euro 96). For this world cup goal difference still came before head to head results. One of the greatest robberies ever, on par with Henry´s handball agains Ireland. I remember this quite well, watchcing it on TV. If Portugal had won the game we would be the one´s to reach the WC finals in 98, instead of Germany, and of course, back then, that would never be permitted.What that miserable corrupt Batta did was revolting! What Rui Costa did was nothing special, I´ve never seen a player on a winning team , running out of the field on a sub, Germans included. How is it possible go get two yellow cards during a sub?. When Rui Costa got the second card he was some 3 meters max from the line!! Batta knew very well what he was doing, and I know German enough to understand the bafflement of the German commentator on this clip. No one understood it, and amids the confusion, the Germans equalized, which was enough to take them to the World cup. I remember the headline in "L´Equipe , the famous French (same nationality as Batta). "Batta puts Portugal out of the World Cup". And so one of the best football generations Portugal´s ever had (far better than our European Champions) missed a golden oportunity. After Rui Costa´s retirement, Batta has recognized his error and tried to personally apologize to Costa. This event was recently remembered as it hit the 20 years mark, and about Batta´s atemptive apology Rui Costa answered: "Before apologizing to me, apolozige to my country". This is also significant since it was the only red card Rui Costa got during his whole career, and since then Portugal has never missed a EC or WC finals. And we are the current European Champions, so fuck you Batta!!!

1994-2001 was the heyday of the golden generation - Between the defeat in Italy in 93 and the US defeat in 2002, believe it or not, Portugal lost only 5 of the 49 regular games the team played. All 5 defeats were by the mininum margin. Portugal in this WC98 qualifying failed in that ridiculous 0-0 in Armenia, even missing a penalty, those 2 pts. were enough to make the play-offs with this 1-1 in Germany.

@@luperamos7307 on the date of the match Ukraine led the group with 17 points, Germany second with 15 points (and one game in hand), and Portugal tied second also with 15 points. Had Germany lost the game, that would mean going into their last two games three points behind Portugal and two behind Ukraine. Did Germany win the last two games? Yes. Did anyone know with 100% certainty that that would be the case? No. Germany simply didn't need special help against Armenia and Albania... Mind you this is for the World Cup where the head organizer (Platini himself) as admitted in 2018 that the group draw was fixed so that France wouldn't face Brazil before the final. So the ref of this game being french... it's easy to imagine that Mr. Platini also told them to make sure that Germany wouldn't lose.

I hope someone investigates this case following what happened recently in FIFA and the revelations made by John Delaney, head of Irish Federation, of a payment of 5 million euros made by FIFA to the Irish federation in order to buy its silence after what happened in the World CUP 2010 qualifying game between France and Ireland in which France was qualified with a goal scored with the hand. If Germany or France are not present in a World Cup it means less profit for FIFA and mafia connected with FIFA. It is also strange that the referee is now an oficial observer for UEFA.

The slow walk off when having a useful result is another one of those cheeky tricks invented by southern European countries like diving.
