I met Mr Colley in 1986 when he was a gemstone cutter. He did several pieces for me over the next couple of years. It's a shame they couldn't talk about his other achievements such as inventing de-icers for airplane wings and the riv-nut, both still in use today. He also invented the fingertip lights in John Glenn's gloves that he used to see his instrument panel. He held over 50 patents for BF Goodrich.

Bennetts first line of questioning and his flummoxed look at the final "no" on whether it has to do with hair had me in stitches..LOL

This was two years before Alan Shepard's suborbital flight, and about four years before John Glenn's orbital flight aboard Freedom 7. Ms. Frances isn't even sure how to pronounce "astronaut." This clip appears quaint to us today, but in 1959 it was science fiction come to life, and a "stumper" simply because it was so outside normal thinking for the time.

I love seeing Arlene trying to find the word that "suits" to identify this line! I love this clip and the other great ones that you have posted!

"...little, baby men..." lol I never seem to get over how completely ravishing Arlene looks! Martin may not appreciate his physical appearance, but he certainly married a looker who does. Her laugh at 7:00, after realizing that all of that guesswork wasn't even the final answer, is priceless. Her question at 7:24 is the topper. I love Arlene and all of these clips!

5:11 Cerf: "Would it be a particularly well dressed man that would wear it?" Contestant: "For his occupation, yes" Great answer by the contestant.

Never realized the design went back to the mid-30's... Obviously started with pressure suits for high-altitude flying.

It's amazing how much of the early space program was centered around Akron, yet they have nothing to show for it now...

They should have explained when the questioning, specifically by Bennett Cerf, got off track: When he asked if it was worn above the waist, of course the answer was yes. He assumed that meant it excluded below the waist (and then eventually below the eyes), which wasn't true, so it completely threw him and the other panelist's off the right path.

exactly, that was my thought throughout the clip

normally the panel will ask if it is also worn below the waist- whether or not it is the person who first asked the question. This is usually ferreted out, but in this case they all went with it without question. It really was their mistake.

Love that Arlene was so forward thinking with the idea of female astronauts. Crazy now to think the thought was crazy then.
