Millimeter wave communication is coming to a wireless network near you. Because of the small antenna size and the need for array gain, array processing is important in millimeter wave communication systems. Join WNCG Prof. Robert Heath for his September 2014 student seminar.
This presentation provides an overview of millimeter wave communication systems. Particular attention is paid to the ways that MIMO communication has played a role in the past and how it may play a role in the future.

Great presentation!!! You cover a wide range of developments. You touched on the interaction of mmWave MIMO and connection diversity. When you consider the success of WiFi, asking why such a conflicted contention-based method has captured 11 billion connected device applications, 3 billion per year and then seek out the factors that influence that that may be transposed as an overall design consideration that shapes the direction of best optimization of technologies, then that greatly impacts the impact that mmWave is likely to have IMO.

What if user and 'first mile' network node devices communicated as a network interconnect layer while the most common user interface used lower tier bands? The issue of LOS blocking largely disapears while the serving network layers grows more diverse, robust and higher capacity. mmWave band connection could be used for 'named content' transfer, most-likely cache to local nodes and UEs. The road bumps are orchestrating regulations, standards and commercial designs so that mmWave proliferates similar to the organic way that WiFi has proliferated. What is being considered is a large increase in access to spectra that could be used IF the common adoption emerges. WiFi did not have a mobile market to adopt it as the cause of its success. It did not have a 'killer app' like automotive apps are dreamed of providing. However, it had the dynamics of user adoption. That seems to be diminished as a proliferation model because the mobile business has much greater mass of sales. However, the most commonly used band and technology is lowly WiFi.. what was once the 'microwave oven' throw-away band for mobile consideration as a consensus of design considerations. WiFi is the model that most applies to how mmWave can be best utilized because it is the most open to innovation in both modes of adoption and evolution of the technologies. Engineering disciplines should recognize the role of do-use of chips and modes of operation going forward. Future wireless will be multi-modulation, multi-access. The should inform the field of design because it provides the wisdom that informs regulators and other government authorities, and commercial efforts IMO.
