I think Jamaicans should appreciate the Maroons a lot more, I love how they've preserved so much of African Culture all through Generations and Centuries with no help in a strange land while being enslaved. Look they're still speaking some Tribal languages without ever being in Africa.... God IS GOOD 👍 🙌👏

@gailroberts We appreciate them. Nanny of the Maroons is a national heroine. However, the history of the Maroons in Jamaica is also controversial because some of their history during 5lavery is not all positive regarding our en5laved ancestors. In spite of that, we still appreciate and honor their historic courage and success in winning their sovereign land before our ancestors were even emancipated from 5lavery. In fact The Maroons of Jamaica are sovereign, since 1738, while Jamaica still has the British Royal family as the head of our government.

The maroons who actually helped us fight against the english I appreciate. The ones who allied themselves with the english against the rest of us, helping them to keep us enslaved, I don’t appreciate. And any of them today who honor those traitors, I don’t appreciate.

I’m about to say something that most Jamaicans won’t like. I have mixed feelings about the Maroons after finding out that they snitched on other slaves who were not Maroons, and had them returned to their British slave masters. They made a deal with the devil.

In the spirit of educating all of our African siblings, please know that the correct term is Asante (not Ashanti). The British could not or would not pronounce the name correctly. Some people take the Ashanti to be the Anglicized form of the name, but that is incorrect.

There were maroons all over the western hemisphere and none was influenced by jamaican maroon culture. They could be found in most of the islands and south America and were simply africans trying to survive the harsh environment they were placed in in a dignified manner.....haitians reinforced by the hatians maroons destroyed the 3 super powers of the time(spain, France and britain) to gain their freedom. So haitian maroobs were actually a success story compared to jamaican maroons who sold out their own people for" peace"

That's what I thought, and not the Acheampong he was telling them. Maya is doing a great job that our adults should've been doing, a long time ago, but, due to his youth and age, sometimes he gives the wrong information and I cringe and start shouting at the screen. No no no, that's wrong info, but obviously, he can't hear me. He's trying, representing the Ghana/Africa, I just wish he knew more info. People who want to know more about Africa or Ghana, unfortunately/fortunately are relying on him for info, so whatever he tells them, (history, traditions, culture), they take as fact, maybe, he should learn just a tiny bit more about the other cultures in Ghana, just a little bit about each tribe, to give short answers about the group. He even forgets that we have other languages and cultures and traditions in Ghana, and he just doesn't know. We should remember that he grew up in a small village in Secondo/Takoradi, and that was his whole life, with that, his exposure to the country, is limited,,but hes definitely trying for us, and working really hard, doing what 100 elders should be doing for us, around the world. Good job, uncle, u are trying. Just remember that, there are EWEs, GAs, ADANGBEs, NORTHERNERs, making up the country, and besides Akans, we all don't get named after the day we are born, u have to explain that well. It's an Akan thing. I met a Jamaican who kept insisting on knowing my Ghanaian name, I told him, and he said it wasn't true becos it didn't sound like the day I was born, well, I'm GA, so we have our own names, we are not named after the day we are born, but social media has unfortunately misinformed everyone else that, everyone in Ghana is named after the day u are born. Good job though uncle, u dey try!

Please stop repeating what you believe to be true but don't know to be fact because your colonial masters has said it was so. The treaty made with those who were not literate in the language of the treaty. Even today, people sign contracts and don't understand all the details. They find out later clauses that were not in their favor. That's why companies hire contract lawyers to avoid issues. Black people nitpick to find differences instead of commonality and are quick to accept information without critical analysis based on others interpretation of events.

I would like to know why some people try to taint the Blackman's history by saying that they are the ones who gave up their people. The American Revolution and the fight between the native Americans were won because there were betray by some of their own people. It also happened in England and the rest of Europe, Asia. @@slashclean8539 Our ancestors are not just from Ghana. They were from many places including Nigeria, other West African countries, South/Central/North America, the Caribbean, including Jamaica. Plus some of them came from Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Portugal and the UK because those used to be Blakk countries too. The Maroons even include in their history that their community includes descendants of the Moors and Tainos. The Moors were here before Columbus got here.
