The integration with sports betting and journalism is eventually going to become a disaster for pro sports. Players are already suspicious of refereeing, and I don't doubt that there is, in fact, some fishy stuff going on.

Refereeing was suspicious long before gambling was legal. The NBA quite literally had a ref who was a part of the mob calling fouls to guarantee outcomes That was in the late '90s. Sports are corrupt regardless of League they all referee things in ways to get the league's favorite teams to win

He openly admitted that he and Woj feed parties private information which effect contract negotiations and trade deals in an NY Magazine piece last year. They are emboldened and brazen. The reason Woj got so salty about nepotism accusations against Bronny is precisely because that shady, quid-pro-quo back-scratching behavior is the exact type of nefarious relationship that lubricates his entire enterprise. It pays his bills. No wonder he got annoyed at the idea certain parties shouldn't have preferences based on their relationships.

shams and woj for a fact have the ability to shift odds and i know this because a relatively small compared to woj and shams football manager youtuber named Zealand did an experiment where he tweeted out a fake transfer rumor but formatted it like an actual report tweet and it got picked up by fans accounts of both clubs and even major websites like transfermarkt (kinda a soccer basketball reference but puts more focus on the buying and selling value part as well as having stats) used it as a source for a transfer rumor and the odds of the transfer went from around 16/1 to 4/1. this was all kinda hijacked a few hours into it when amazingly the transfer started to like genuinely get into motion from like reputable sources but still the point stands that if they really wanted they could tweet out "curry request trade" and the odds for everything around the league would change

It's a well known tactic in European football where teams leak stuff online or to clickbait hungry media.Bigger teams try to bully smaller teams by leaking undervalued low ball bids and weaker teams sometimes add a 2nd rival club to a player they might sell or they find out the transfer budget for a club and say that they're bidding exactly that in the Media. For Example Manchester United Bids 35million for Jared Brainthwaite(he's worth 69-85million) At the same time there were 4-5 clubs in Portugal and spain saying United bid exactly 50 million for their player(which just so happens to be their exact transfer budget this summer)

I find both of their roles in the media landscape to be detestable. From Woj going on tv recently to insist nepotism can't be criticized because it's ubiquitous, to Shams tweeting information that significantly alters betting odds when he himself is an employee of FanDuel; it's time to bin these dolts and any of their acolytes.

love this inside baseball (inside basketball), Kof! kudos. and agreed on your take, absolutely. their employment/ties to sportsbooks are completely unfucking unethical. it would happen anyway even if they didn't have direct ties, and some part of me knows that if anything, it's likely better that the tie is openly known. but yes, your general "putting your hands up and saying, uh, this isn't exactly kosher" vibe is 100% on point.

The thing I don’t like about the two of them is that people just think *that* is sports reporting now. Basically just getting a press release like 20 minutes before everyone else sees the team tweet. They’re not changing the outcomes, they’re not even revealing information that wouldn’t be available otherwise or holding people to account. They are at this point mouthpieces of agents/FOs/players. I’m not even trying to hate I get why they are so popular and they both are total pros, I’m just kinda wondering what they get out of tweeting draft picks 2 minutes before they’re announced besides clout and maybe an ego boost.

In my mind Sham’s and Woj importance is less in the actual breaking of news which as you mentioned will be blasted everywhere in minutes anyway and more about how they feed into the nba hypothetical’s of where will X go? Will Y request a trade? It’s undeniable that the speculation drives almost as much interest as the actual games. On the betting side of things I understand it’s a slippery slope but I really don’t think either one of those guys has as much impact on the lines as people seem to think, even though they cut their teeth by getting things right they get lied to/ used to push a narrative by a team or agent just as often as they have real news to break and the betting companies are just as tied to inside information as they are just not publicly so at best they have a small leg up on market.

Just 2 PR tools players just to leverage their power dynamic with owners and executives on teams. Also how nobody is calling how many times this journalism put out reports that turn out to be fake?. The accuracy of this "journalism" is debatable, but nobody ever talk about it They are just mouth pieces for the agency who pay them money. I wish TV Networks stop having shows around them. They are journalism why are we making such a big show around them reading tweets?. This people by signing sponsorship deal and being linked to TV networks also throw the integrity out of the window with Woj pushing narratives ESPN wants, Shams being associated to betting houses. Where's the intergrity?. This people got so much power and control FOR NO REASON AT ALL.

It has always bothered me that Woj and Shams are represented by the same agency representing a large portion of the league. Like Shams is under Klutch, it just feels like such a conflict of interest. Like do you really think Shams isn't spinning things towards his agency and Woj isn't doing the same for people under CAA like him? It feels less like they are writers and more just a device for agents, teams, players and more to put their thoughts, agendas and narratives out through two of the most followed people in sports media. Yeah, the sports betting with both of them literally working together with major players, agents, coaches and more just feels slimy and like it is just destined for some type of insider trading scandal.
