I was watching someone else's playthrough of "God of War: Ragnarok" a few years ago, and it was (most of the time) quite interesting...until it reached Angrbøda and her, umm, auntie. The disingenuous nature of the race-swapping was so obviously against the grain of the narrative and world-building that it was an almost physical shock: it jarred me out of the story so completely that I found myself spending the remaining 50%+ of the playthrough watching for other out-of-place inserts, to where I simply had no real interest in the game anymore. That whole episode could have (and should have) been cut from the game, and nothing important would have been lost. Indeed, the integrity of the narrative would have been much healthier overall. It's things like that which have caused us to revolt against these "narrative consultant" companies. They add nothing, and most of the time what they accomplish in a game is the equivalent of dropping a manual transmission into reverse while going 80mph down the highway: it causes the whole engine of imagination to self-destruct.

I’ve met a number of 40k fans who came from all walks of life. One was dressed in an scantily anime cosplay at a convention, other where PoC, and even the LGBT community had fans of 40k. The Warhammer Community is one of the kindest, friendliest, and most welcoming and acceptable communities out there. All that’s needed to join is to be a fan and keep politics away unless it’s in reference to in lore satire. Fun fact, their is LGBT and “woke” representation in Warhammer. The difference is that these characters, like Yarrick who’s gay, *happen* to be xyz, rather than xyz characters. And in lore, these things aren’t paid any notoriety because it’s part of life, and universally accepted. As long as it’s Human on Human, and non-chaos, the Imperium *doesn’t care* and never will.

Top that off with the incredibly delicate relationship that Terra and Ministorum have with the Mechanicus due to the Treaty of Mars and of course the sheer expanse of the Imperium and you have an amazingly convoluted political structure. That much variety and expanse with so little grounded history is a recipe for socio-political insanity. building on a feudal structure coupled with religious zealotry would be about all that could actually keep that sinking ship afloat.

I suppose when many studios are bending the knee and agreeing to push thier politic, it actually is a political statement, but it shouldnt be asking game studios too much to simply be neutral or stay out of real world politics altogether. I am a conservative game dev that often has to just pretend I am a left leaning moron. The idea that you can be conservative and not be discriminated against is completely false. I believe while liberals dominate the space, we are growing in number. At one place I worked at, we had a conservative club that we would let people in once we got a sense that someone was a little more conservative than they let on.
