The same people who enthusiastically signed up their children knowing there was no school prayer now demanding school prayer. Did you say something like this "everyone has bigotry inside and some opportunity can bring it out". This example is a strong argument for that. Glad you did this interview. I didn't understand the exact reason for all the controversy around her school.

Amazing woman. Amazing achievements every day. It would be great if Labour could get behind her instead of building hurdles and spreading poison. Instead of hammering Private Schools they should be trying to replicate this public education model of education across the country, but alas, they see achievement as elitist. Keep going Katherine!!!!!!

I would love to have had this woman as my head teacher. My head teacher was hands off overly tolerant of misbehaviour and unsupportive of teachers trying to cope with disruptive students. Essentially my head teacher washed her hands of responsibility for behaviour leaving everything to the teacher. It made life very difficult and stressful knowing you were on your own and the management was not on your side.

In any society, however enlightened it considers itself, there are always taboos and always a group you're allowed to kick. How free we are, we think, we've got rid of the old taboo- while a new unrecognized taboo takes it's place. How enlightened we are, we think, we don't kick the people we used to, not noticing the new group we are allowed to kick.

This is going to sound mean but Im glad you went through this and spoke out about it This is exactly what i feel is happening around the world today. My family and i experience this quite often about our beliefs. We are not a religious family but conduct ourselves in a way that benefits us and our direct environment. Its viewed with suspicion. What i cant fathom is people say they want a specific thing...like be kind to one another ...but inherently act against that. You explained this in example, perfectly. Respect, to many people, has changed its definition.
@4my4blessingsАй бұрын
Funny you should say that. I'm a trainee teacher in the UK with a placement in a secular school and at my last mentor meeting, I was informed that I shouldn't use gender based words, and how people of a certain age didn't grow up with this "because we didn't know any better". Um, no. I will not be made to feel evil because something wasn't even a thing. We as a community seem determined to brainwash the young into blaming the past or the people of the past for all the today problems. Instead we should share the stories of people's resilience and honourable behaviours and hold them up as good examples of people taking ownership of their problems and doing something without excuses and blaming. And keep woke crap out of the classroom!
@ishanloomba7883 ай бұрын
Interesting. However, I don’t understand the point being made in the last part about ‘woke’ teachers. How does teaching James Baldwin or W. E. B. Du Bois, or the research of Jennifer Eberhardt or Claude Steele, make students behave worse?? (I list these authors, because their scholarship and insights would like be labeled by the right as ‘woke’.) I don’t understand how teaching about slavery, the Holocaust, and the very strong case being made by researchers in academia (sociologists and historians) about systemic racism, makes students become more disruptive and impolite.

It's about expectations then people expecting more for those expectations for their own agenda. If - in the briefing you are told X - then don't expect Y. As a kid in the 70's I went to a Catholic Grammar School - passed the 11+ and I was Catholic - so that's where I got sent, 11 years old and having to get two buses - took about an hour, that's what used to happen in the day. I then went to the introduction 'thing' that the School had as my eldest son was going (I now lived in the catchment area) it was a High School by then but still adhered to strict rules. In that presentation the Headmaster (a civilian - my lot where Canons and the Very Reverend) stressed and stressed again that this was a CATHOLIC High School. As a bored parent thinking why I'm here, bloody hell it's only School, then I did admit I thought - Catholic School - duhhh yeah? then I noticed there were a lot of people who where obviously not the Catholic types, from their complexion and dress (unless they had flew in from Goa) but were there for the good education that this particular school would ensure the pupils got - whether they liked it or not. Looking back I think the stress on the subset (sub sect) of Christianity was there for a purpose - don't mess with the values, you are going to get that which is painted on the outside of the tin. That was a good school, it taught you how to think - which for organised religions is not a good thing, I might believe in a higher being but I'm damn sure They didn't write out the Catechism or the other rotes of the various Abrahamic religions, so in a way the school failed to indoctrinate me, but I'm sure they didn't give a damn, just pleased to teach me how to question things. Payer time was never an issue - although when I was there we had to go to Benediction once a week - but that meant finishing at 15:00 instead of 16:30, I don't think my lads had that.

Not just WHITE middle class men....it's people of privilege. We seem to conveniently forget that in predominantly black, Indian, Chinese etc society those with privilege take advantage and suppress those without. You think that in black African countries everyone is sitting round the campfire singing kumbayah? It's just that in multicultural societies, those of privilege are more often them not white. Framing the argument in terms of just race instead of economics and privilege misses the point because people with advantage will ALWAYS treat the lesser fortunate poorly
