this young wolf is learning how to interact with brown bears. It is not a threat to the female bear, but a pack of wolves can hunt and kill young cubs if they can separate them from the mother. Mother bears will defend their cubs to the death, and in a fight a wolf has no chance against an adult bear.

The wolf is not a threat to the sow nor her cubs. Merely curious, playful perhaps even lonely. Wolves are also keenly aware bears can be an indicator of a carcass in the area. 🐺

That poor wolf appeared to be very thin and mangy-looking...Depending on the season, it may be shedding. Nonetheless, it had to be desperately hungry to even THINK about grabbing a bear cub. By the way...why aren't Grizzlies as tolerant with humans as they were with this wolf? You don't need to answer...it was a rhetorical question. :)

Wolf with the tail down between its legs is very submissive. Just looking for a meal the bears may leave behind. Even the cubs are too large for for it to attack. Neither party is looking for an encounter.

Probably because the Bears didn't feel a single wolf was enough of a threat to panic over. They were on their guard, but not really threatened enough to put any real effort into to chasing the wolf off. They probably sensed the wolf wasn't dumb enough to attack them alone.

I agree. We will never know for sure but I dont believe for a second that wolf seriously was hunting a cub. This appeared much more like a social animal looking to play even if it is just being chased. He did that, flap out both front paws type th8ng allbcanines do when wanting to pla. He may have gotten a sense of play ftom the cubs who I am surecwould l9ve to play. Momma was not letting any fun going to happen. Party pooper. Some of the most amazing footage has to be the wild polar bears actually playing with sled dogs. Its is just incredible. They are just massive and the dogs play rough yet the heats remain gentle.

An uneasy but not very scary relationship between these two species. Neither can catch the other. Each is aware the other species is not going to attack. They likely each like to eat scraps left over from the other's meals.

Yeah, a lone wolf isn't going to attack a sow and two big cubs. As well, the Bears didn't consider the wolf enough of a threat to put any real effort into chasing it off, so end turns into a relatively calm encounter. If there had been a pack of wolves it would have been a different story. Then it would have been rumble time.

Paul Arthur Not True. The cubs are far too large and could inflict serious damage to the wolf. Not even a remote consideration for mr. Wolf. Mammals come preprogrammed for millions of years not to take excessive risks that threaten their very existence.

Paul Arthur: I don't think so. I think if that wolf was with it's pack, and they were intent on attacking the Bears, they would have all come at once and began an harassing attack tactic. I think this wolf was alone, and probably curious, confused, or trying to distract the Bears away. I can't see the wolf thinking of attacking. One of those cubs alone would have proved to have been more than a challenge for a single wolf.

I think it is a lone wolf and is confused. To me it seems that the wolf may be trying to fit in the group or family of bears. Wolfs are very social. The wolf even appears to nibble at the grasses like the bears were. It looks like its immitating the bears to me and the bears tollerate it for a moment then threaten the wolf by face or body gestures. I've seen a similar video before. Im not an expert but this is what i see out of it

Wolves have been known to take down black and brown bears with ease. Read "The Last of The Wild Wolves" by Ian Mcallister, he writes about witnessing such events occuring.

The wolf is immitating the bears because its a lone wolf and is confused. Wolfs are very social and this is a case in my opinion of a somewhat lame and banished animal. Its group outcasted it and it prob has a hard time eating surviving etc and is trying to find any group. Seen this before. I may be wrong but where's this wolfs pack? Looks like a loner. Why is it eating grass. Likely because its trying to do what the bears are doing.

@lukepevensie She was trying for some of the meat, you can see her snag some of it.Top predators steal each others kills all the time. I saw that on Nova/Nature this week. It was frustrating for the wolves. this BIG Male bear showed up followed them as they hunted then took it. in the same eposide a pack stole a young male had killed an elk had buried it and was guarding it, and a whole back drove him off and then ate his kill. It kinda funny to see them tit for tat each other.

The Wolf is probably just curious or has pups near by. She is more in danger of being killed by the Bears than the other way around, so I tend to doubt she's thinking about lunch. She'd have no chance of killing a Cub with the Mother and other Cub there, and one Cub alone is big enough to kill or seriously injury the wolf.
