To complete the third part of this series would be a guaranteed success. Woke politics won't allow it because it is too late to cast a black lesbian as Thomas Cromwell. It wasn't the actors. @@philjamieson5572 Well, you are most certainly entitled to your opinion. It is not a fast-paced, action-packed miniseries. And while there are beheadings and court intrigue, the "real" interest of the series (and the books) centers on the personalities of the principal actors, especially Cromwell. And if you aren't drawn in by that, then it stands to reason that you will find it dull. Separation of Church and State is not a gripping theme for most. I hear "The Tudors" (2007-2010) appealed to a great many people. Cheers!

To each her own, I guess ---I think Mark Rylance as Cromwell is absolutely gorgeous. Rylance with mustache off screen not the same aura, but Cromwell, his intense brow, his powerful stare, his face of strength yet sensuous. Statuesque, his long garb. I cannot breathe!! Young Henry, not my cup of tea, lol.
@Trenacker
@Trenacker 5 жыл бұрын
I see a lot of emotion. What I love about Cromwell is that he is always in control. He is a self-made man of supreme skill and clearly intense passions--his love for his wife, the Cardinal, and the idea of the English monarchy are major themes throughout the story. You can also detect his regret at Moore's fate--which is a novel take on the character. Cromwell is usually presented as a villain.
@Retrostar619
@Retrostar619 5 жыл бұрын
What you see is the character's intelligence, the expression of the inner life of Cromwell's mind and the flickers of his soul. Which, of course, requires an actor of soul and intelligence to portray. That's what Rylance does so well. The source of his power as a performer is that he works in quiet, reflective moments to show you what the character is thinking. It's all in the eyes, the subtle micro-expressions of his face and the small changes in voice tone. Most actors paint their emotions in simple, easy to read colours. Rylance is able to convey a wide variety of emotions at the same time by hardly doing anything at all. This is because he understands the psychology of the person he is playing. Listen to a couple of interviews with him about Wolf Hall and you'll get the idea.

I thoroughly enjoyed this drama, I loved the pace and the language. Damian Lewis to me is as how I imagine Henry VIII to have been. I know drama is based on the novel, but my complaint was that it made Cromwell somewhat of a hero. The reality is when one reads of his leading role in the monstrous injustice of the dissolution of the monasteries, how he fabricated and spun evidence to condemn many innocent men, such as Richard Whiting, who had done great service in their lives, the reality is that this man was a monster.

@@si4632 I grew up Catholic, and now I'm about as anti-Catholic (the religion, not the believers) as they come. Particularly at the time in history portrayed in this series, the Pope, and the Church in general, had little at all to do with god and spiritual matters, and instead was entirely concerned with temporal wealth, power and politics. So basically, Cromwell *was* a monster, as the original poster stated (which the series does not show him honestly as, really), but the Catholic Church really didn't get slandered in this production--they were portrayed pretty accurately.

You need to watch the whole series (or the last Episode at least), it does not depict Cromwell as 'innocent' in the matter of Anne Boleyn's fall.
