When Ambassador wolf Alawa licks and nibbles Nikai, not only is Alawa keeping her brother's fur clean and free of debris, her grooming efforts are gestures of intimacy that reaffirm the unique emotional bonds that shape the foundation of the family.
Because when it comes to wolves, it's all about family.
Alawa and Nikai are captive-born Canadian/Rocky Mountain gray wolves at the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC), a 501c3 non-profit organization, in South Salem, NY. The siblings are two of the three 'ambassador wolves' at the WCC that help teach the public about wolves and their vital role in the environment.

This might save your dogs life so listen carefully- NOT a joke. This preening is an extremely important aspect of pack life- They don’t have anyone to groom them but each other. They can get DEEP- under matted / impacted fur- and if not remove the entire matt, cut through enough to allow the scratching or rubbing against bark and branches to get them out. Lay next to your dog ESPECIALLY long hair breeds- or especially the snow dogs with undercoat - and use a thumb and forefinger to GENTLY- “pinch” through your best buddy’s coat- especially wear any harnesses collars etc are normally across or under - If you see dark colors patches or what look like “trails” in their fur- like a band of color running across the shoulders to the ribs just example- That’s a sign there might be a matt adjacent to that strip and causing the fur to pull together - literally constricting. Or an area of fur that looks “cottony” or tufted or swirled... Check very carefully between their breastbone under both front legs running up to their center top of shoulders .. Base skull is a big one- Check gently and along the UNDERSIDE of their rear jawline then up into type area behind their ears- If buddy is constantly stopping to scratch behind their ears- it’s likely a deep matt that needs preening out.. you will sense an immediate release of tension in your buddy’s fur - in the immediate area- as if you had wrung a towel together taught- then let go a bit- Imaging that relief behind your ears- or pulling over your eyes - If you feel rough strands- gently pull up on those and likely it is old shed that’s impacted - I don’t know the exact terminology- Bit I’m telling you from first hand experience, brushing and grooming are likely very possibly missing these - Do your buddy a favor of extreme importance- plus it is he most loving time you will EVER spend with them- pure GIVING- of relief. You will see and hear pure joy at the relief they get when you get one these tangles out of their rear legs- or under their ribs or especially their belly Be EXTREMELY GENTLE- go SLOW- some of these are likely old and could be painful or causing nerve impingement so any touch- is amplified and they might snap just out of pure impulse of the pain/ tickle sensation- But I promise you - if your dog as these- it will be the greatest gift you ever give them - And if not- The time you spend on the floor preeningbthem with two fingers- will be the best thing you ever do - For you. It’s amazing the response you will get from them. Your heart will melt.
