Not all types of mange are contagious. The "sarcoptic" type of mange IS very contagious, but the more common "demodectic" mange generally isn't -- and when an animal has it, it's because they're unhealthy in some other way. I once rescued a very mangy dog from a park, and with a couple of months of good feeding he had an AMAZINGLY thick and beautiful coat -- and he didn't infect either of my two dobes. Nice to see the "stick through hoop" method working well!
@mavali5296 жыл бұрын
GetMeThere1 when I saw the first release video I thought of it that they should use the stick through hoop lol and I know watched dit and it works much better then the last few

Its not uncommon for wolves to actually recover from mange, its often a death sentence for foxes and smaller animals but wolves have a really great immune system and reacts alot better to the parasites than other species and can often fight it off and regrow hair in the bald spots. Good on you for letting it go and letting nature have its course.

When they get mange, are they able to help themselves get rid of it. If not, why let it loose if it such a danger to the rest of the pack? Not that I want the wolf to die but killing one now, might save a whole pack later , or am I mistaken? Not criticizing here, just curious. Thanks Men, and by the way , liked and subscribed.

Don't mind all the naysayers, most people don't even know of the situation you guys are in, and even then most who comment in such ways are normally overtaken by their emotions rather than their reason. From what I can see and hear from your videos you guys sound compassionate and sincere, not blood lusting hunters who poach for only personal gain. Still, it is sad to see the wolf in such condition(mange). Such handsome creature, what a shame.

Late reply, but I can answer this as a biologist. Nature must take its course. The disease won't kill them all. A lot of them, but not all. Mange and other parasitic and blood borne diseases inflict packs and herds with higher than normal populations. It's the great equalizer. It doesn't allow the wolf pack to get so large that they kill all of the wildlife that keeps the trees and meadows clear, and it doesn't allow the herds of deer (et al) to grow so large that they run out of food and starve. Humans are not the great savior of species. We must allow life and death to cycle as it normally would. You can't save them all, nor should you.

@dannygarden4646 жыл бұрын
I left a comment on another video about the release, why don't you use a plywood or any kind of sheild ? Faster and less stress to the animal and people, I been using this for years now and it's so easy, you only have to free the animal, plus it's a good protection if it want to turn arround, mine is about 3X3 with 2 handles so I can use any hand.

Thank you for releasing this Wolf, even though she had mange. It always breaks my heard to read comments like "should have shot the wolf. or shot more than one" simply because some hunters, farmers, disagree with the wolf returning. It boggles my mind that people can not live in harmony with nature without immediately going "nope we have to kill it" once their own property gets a visit by these animals. regarding the mange. how does it cross over from one pack to another and infect others? or does the infection just stay within this one pack? i only know mange cases with neglected dogs so the connection to mange and "over population" isn't something i can understand...mainly because wolfs aren't really overpopulated (contrary to humans with their 7.8 billion people) i could imagine that a prey of theirs is infected and as they're hunting and killing it, it spreads the infection to them.
@DMTrojan8 жыл бұрын
+KaySan666 IT's even odder because being a good hunter/predator/trapper is all about only killing what you need to live and keep the ecosystem balanced. The sorry thing is up here in Wisconsin and Canada things are a bit buggered out of balance after the overhunting of caribou and culling of a lot of wolves (who the overhunting had been blamed on) a few decades ago. Things still ain't balanced out yet.

Joey Unfortunately there are no cooperative programs established to allow for treatment of wild animals for a natural condition such as mange. This is a mite which causes hair loss and is attributed to over population of certain canines, kind of nature's way of culling the herd. Great question and thank you for that!
@TheXaimaca4 жыл бұрын
I would like to observe that the wolf does not normally pose a danger to people, since it carefully avoids us.The massacres in the flocks are caused by hybrids and they can be a danger to us. And the hybrids are the consequence of our unhealthy behaviors. Therefore, we all must protect and defend the purity of that wonderful animal that is the wolf. Greetings

Isn't there a way to get rid of it's mange, like get a vet to put it to sleep obviously first, and an injection. Then wait for her to wake up THEN release her?
@walterroberts15359 жыл бұрын
+Sir To You There are many things that could be done to help keep our animals healthy, but it is illegal to have a live animal in a vehicle or to transport even a dead animal without proper licenses or permits. Getting a veterinarian into the field would be very costly and because it is a wild animal there would be a great deal of red tape to go through just to allow for any treatment. In a few words; it is just not practical nor would it be very popular as we would get ridiculed by some for even touching the animal even if it means to save its life, kind of like the posts you see on here, lol! Thank you for watching and for your question!

Whether it spreads depends on the type of mange. Demodectic (which is common among domestic dogs and blooms due to lowered immune system) and sarcoptic (which, in another name, is scabies and can be contracted by humans, cats, and all manner of animals). Sarcoptic mange prefers areas with less hair - ears, belly, elbows. Demodectic mange is far more common and does not spread from animal to animal, and appears on larger parts of the body - back, shoulders, head. Odds are, this wolf is young and unhealthy. She looks fairly thin in the video. If it's suspected to be highly contagious sarcoptic mange, perhaps a Game Warden, or Parks and Wildlife ought to be contacted.
