Remember, this is a song. It's a poetic interpretation of how things may have felt for those tank crews on the Eastern Front in World War 2.
No matter the side these soldiers were on... the war was not theirs but was that of petty pompous politicians who sent poor souls off to die in their stead. War is not good, violence is not good. Those young Russian & German soldiers... they had no malice toward each other, they were there, fighting for their lives because some prick in a fancy uniform thousands of miles from the action wanted to play god. We need to stop fighting and squabbling over things that mean nothing.
Life is precious and far too many people have suffered and are still suffering at the whim of an elitist few who pull at the strings of mankind for their own pleasure or greed.
