The best way to muddy the water , is to make sure the system of governance is so convoluted, layered and complicated, it’s unrecognizable as a standard definition. When was the last time and place the majority of citizens were represented, rather than ruled? I was in a union once, way back in the last century…probably the last time my vote for anything actually counted. 🤔🥴

Chaos. Greedy reichwing billionaires simply use this one word as their goal going forward. "In chaos, one can steal." Old saying. Ray-gun regularly bashed our govt. in his speeches. His goal was to get Americans to stop putting their trust in politicians--never mind Raygun was a staunch Rethuglicon, himself. The belief was that when ppl stop trusting, believing in their govt working for them, they will become apathetic & no longer vote. It worked. Leftwing voters have had problems showing up to vote since. 2024 perfect example of that!! And our midterms elections are the worst voter turnout. No other developed country is as consistently bad in voter turnout as the US. BTW: Low voter turnout always helps the one party that always want to vote--that is, Rs.

Trump's false promises and "hucksterism" is so reminiscent of Hitler's specious bravado that it almost floors me at times. The gleeful acceptance of a majority of American's to his false promises also reminds me of the naiveté and desperation that allowed the German People to succumb to false promises. When I finally learned the origin story of Left and Right as political terms, how they came out of the National Assembly of the French Revolution, the terms Democratic and Authoritarian became more meaningful. Those terms could no longer be used in the same way on me, as rhetoric to mislead. Understanding the meaning and history of these simple terms, which has been obscured in cold war and post cold war America, makes so many "muddy waters" crystal clear. Some people will argue their meanings have changed, but by the "four c's" of defining terms (clarity, consequences, consensus and convenience) the original definitions are far and away the clear winner.

A funny, curious thing about leaders of states of the past that we have labeled authoritarian. Stalin (and, of course all the heads of the USSR) Wanted the world to see their empire as Socialist, while the structure and function of it's economy was clearly modeled on corporations in capitalism and it was governed top down as well. Hitler called his "national socialism", while it was clearly a top down governance hierarchy as well. Labels are, often times, just a way to lie. Look at the actions, and often more importantly, what actions the structures are more suited to serving.

Actually more. We already have 3 parties and nothing changes. A few politicians are Independents, but because the 2 main parties dominate, Independents will still go over to one party or the other instead of staying on their own. If Independents, or another party populated more of DC, they would have enough power to stand on their own and not have to caucus.

As a European, I have the choice between several parties, which generally represent a wide range of opinions. In the US, democratic competition is split between two parties that cannot pay their way without the private sector, so they are very easily subdued. The Superpacs are the epitome of distortion of a democratic process. No European can understand why it is not possible to set up an alternative third party and make it a success. The US, the founding country of modern democracy, is now the most undemocratic country of all. Moreover, there is no publicly funded media, and here too, true democrats would have to create competition with the private sector.

"And once you lose it you won't get it back"

That's not true at all! Throughout my 68 years, many times South American countries have rid themselves of their rogue dictators! Brazil had a Dumpty wannabe with Jair Bolsonaro. Once his term was over, he tried to steal the next election and was immediately put down by Brazilian govt, his supporters were jailed and he was forbidden from running for the next 8 years. Lots of this back and forth from tyrant to democracy has been happening all throughout world history. HITLER, Mussolini, their terms ended and more democratic leaders replaced them. How do you NOT KNOW THIS?? Learn some world history--PLEASE, before you pass on BS.

That's what American politicians are fear of, a strong and healthy Chinese people corporation running China. Democracy is not a bad option but to some extent needs some unrealistic ingredients to make it work. The ingredients include a good culture of patience, mutual respect, accommodation and inclusiveness, a self restraint in exercising personal rights and freedom, and willingness to follow the majority decision which is not made at the expense of sacrificing the interest of the minority. In a real world, these are not all possible not to mention for all time.

Your inability to understand that ANY system will quickly become an authoritarian system when money and or power are in play is staggering. If you took all of your savings, invented a product, and set out to market that product, would you want every employee to have a vote as to how the company should be run? People with zero experience, no financial stake, and maybe crazy ideas, should have an equal say? You would lose everything very quickly. Human beings Mr. Wolff, not robots.

Authoritarianism isn't necessarily bad, just as democracy isn't necessarily good. Authoritarianism can be good if the person at the top is caring, conscientious, capable, intelligent, strong, and visionary. Democracy can be bad if the elected leader is incompetent, negligent, stupid, weak, and shortsighted. No system of governance is perfect nor ideal. Every country must choose the system that best fits its national circumstances and conditions. While authoritarianism or democracy can fail, just as much as it can succeed, we must respect it in every country.

Authoritarianism isn't a hustle. It's a vile thing. It's strongmen. It's Duterte, Xi, Kim and Putin and a host of other strongman leaders who won't be criticized and who on their own orders imprison those who oppose them. What does it mean? It means that a leader can decide to control information available to the people and the people are constantly propagandized. It's when you can't dissent from whatever stupid thing the leader says. Authoritarianism is when the leader controls the government so thoroughly that people who might be elected by the people can get fired by one man at his will. It when laws are twisted to please the will of the Dear Leader who must be idolized and always obeyed. Nobody says that the United States is above authoritarianism. We are now immersed in it. It seems to be the current fashion among world leaders. Now we can name our own Dear Leader among the rest who do not allow the people to express their desires and to conduct free elections. Does the United States have authoritarians? Did we always have elites who are treated like nobility? Do we have a privileged class that keeps politicians in line doing their bidding with their vast wealth? Certainly we do. The United States is authoritarian in that way and always has been, but we have had certain freedoms enumerated in the First Amendment of our Constitution and now our truely authoritarian Dear Leader is going to begin to undo freedom of speech, the ability to redress grievances. We are not going to be allowed to gather together and to make our politicians and President listen to us when they do things that hurt us. Authoritarianism is loss of freedom, loss of privacy, lost of the ability to form a dissenting opinion and express it publicly. It's ignoring the laws if you are an enabler of the Dear Leader who is excused from obeying the common laws of the land by a corrupted Supreme Court appointed by our very own Dear Leader. Professor Wolff, we who have known a little freedom and who have voted for flawed candidates presented to us by the powerful, we know what we are losing and we don't want to live in a Putinesque autocratic state. We want to improve upon what the elites have presented us with. We want to be able to change and to have hope for change. Here we, the people, might still actually organize for change. We want to try. Well, we could do that before now. Now? Now we have real total authoritarianism growing. We are losing not only the freedoms we have taken forgranted but the hope that together we can have any say at all about our lives. That's authiritarianism. Your whataboutism and excusing authoritarianism is nothing but a crock of...I don't want to be crude but it smells bad!

You come across as all knowing, but the use of authoritarian usually has to do with the guy at the top who is dictating to everybody else how it will be. Trump appears to be turning into that, even though he was elected via the Democratic process. There are countless levels of authority below the top of government in any system.
