Still one of the best versions, musically. And this concertante performance is just marvelous. The voices, their acting, and the absence of spectacle bring out the pure and great musical performance.

Words fail me. Musically, vocally, emotionally, philosophically, it's all spot on. Pilobolus makes a fascinating addition. As if Finley's lush baritone weren't enough, it seems as though he's actually whistling and playing the glockenspiel! (If not, he sure can fake it!) All in all, one can imagine Wolferl grinning from ear to ear. Kudos and thanks to all for a truly enjoyable and uplifting performance.

This video is my wet dream come true. I can't decide what's better; having sex or watching this video over and over again. This is perfection!!!! I always say that everything John Elliot Gardiner puts his hands on turns to gold. The man is a god among men. His attention to detail is unsurpassed. Everything is meticulously done; from picking the right singers (all of whom are ridiculously talented), to the quality of the orchestra, which is just divine. When I think of dying and going to heaven, I picture it exactly like this. I walk into a concert hall where John Elliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir are performing, and I ask myself why did I wait so long!

I agree,probably one of the best performances of that peace. Unfortunately it was never released on a DVD. Surprisingly it was released on a LaserDisc. I still own it, but it has some scratches on it, so it is not so usable.

I'm really confused why they decided to change so many things about this production. I don't like the trend in modern theater of turning everything into a minimalist trapeze performance. Not using props and scenery in your Opera doesn't make it "fresh" or appealing at all, it almost feels pretentious to me. ALSO, I noticed a few vocal parts were changed, or harmonies entirely removed, like in "Zum Ziele führt dich diese Bahn," one of the Three Boys' harmonies was entirely removed. I mean, the orchestra and performers sound great, I'm pretty sure these are period instruments and they sound great, but to quote the movie Amadeus. "Displace one note and there would be diminishment."

I was there in 1995. It is performerd in a building with probalbly the best acoustics of the world. Mostly if there is Opera the performers are very static, because it is not a theatre. This was then truly refreshing in reference to the usual static performances
