The emperor cares about the primarchs. The emperor cares about everything. Literally. Everything. But because if this, he is also 100% willing to sacrifice any or all of his sons without a second thought as long as it furthers his ultimate goals. But he held back on horus despite the massive betrayal. he intended to go easy on Magnus, despite Magnus unintentionally dooming the future of mankind. He went easy on lorgar, despite lorgars insistence on disobeying his most important command. These small moments of weakness are the proof that he really does see them as sons

I'd say he's not, as everyone sees something different in him, whatever they want to see based on how the power radiating from him effects them. Take the tech adept Arkhan Land in Master of Mankind when the Emperor is performing surgery on Angron's brain and assessing whether he can remove the butchers nails without killing him, and refers to him as XII instead of Angron. Land observes that the Emperor is every part the Omnissiah, cold, calculated, efficient. John Grammaticus the perpectual saw the Emperor at the beginning of the Great Crusade as a golden man, huge like a Primarch in his armour, but no golden light, no radiance or majesty, just a gilded king playing at Empire. Corax sees the man himself, normal man size and without fancy trappings except the eagle necklace.

According to the official order of the rediscovery of the Primarchs, Corax was found *before* the 11th Primarch, so how can the 2nd and 11th Primarchs be already ‘the forgotten and the purged’ if one of them hasn’t even been found yet? They should just switch Corax and the 11th Primarch around in the order of rediscovery and that would fix this.

IMO The Emperor does actually try to care, but after tens of millennia being a being of elevated mind and body, he simply has stunted emotions like compassion and empathy. So though he does try to be a good father/role model, he's simply just bad at it, combined with the pressure of duty and vision he has to humanity, he tends to forget he can put his long term goals on the back burner for a bit, to take time for the now. Hence every primarch having daddy issues.

I think Angron was a knee jerk reaction from the Emperor. I do believe he cared, but he arrived in the moment just before his son was going to die. He didn't think about the ramifications just that he had to save his son. So he chose the closest most assured way of getting him to safety. Lorgar ... well I think in a way the emperor just didn't understand Lorgar. He tried to be patient with him and tried to give him time to grow out of his beliefs, but ultimately had no answer for a son who needed to believe in something high than humanity. A son who needed faith in a god. Sad, because both Angron and Lorgar were sons who could have had a genuine expiriance with the emperor if their situations had been only a little different. If Lorgar had spent decades with the emperor, learning from him as horus did, or if Angron had seen the emperor come like an angel from the sky and join him and his warriors in battle with their oppressors. They would be the most loyal of his sons.

I'm still up in the air. It could be a manipulation. A means to an end. When he fought Horus, he may have thought as a Perpetual, he would be fine. Until he saw Horus strike down a Perpetual (I know, this is as a result of a ret con..) which may actually make it more pertinent. Guilliman said, "we are tools for the Emperor" (paraphrasing) Is it because the emperor is so shattered from his time on the throne that he sees his sons that way? Or has he always?
@londonworkman76175 жыл бұрын
Adrien Watson He had the full power to instantly destroy Horus. This is why even in his completely broken body and on the floor, he was able to unleash his pshykic power and completely erase Horus’ physical and soul form. In his full might before the fight, why hold back against something that threatened his entire plan? Horus was truly a son when even in the books, the emperor was described having to hold back compassion in order to fully destroy Horus. After seeing half his sons remain traitors, his imperium dwindle in power and majesty every year, and the possibility that he fights chaos every day and is near death, for 10000 years, he likely would have lost most of his humanity, but not to say that he never had it. For he is still only a man, and any man can expect to turn cold after so long.

@@londonworkman7617 I have a tendancy to agree with you. However, being the devils advocate.... The Emperor is a perpetual. The Emperor can see the future. (In an inaccurate way) I know the current lore is a ret con. Yet the story and actions of the God Emperor make more sense if his mind was changed by Horus' killing of the Imperial Gaurdsman/golden one/Astartes (who can keep track these days 😉) Brilliant Primarchs have even said, we are nothing more than his tools... even before they were corrupted. Once again. I have a tendancy to agree with you. The Siege of Terra should clear it up.. I have yet to read Solar War, we will see what happens with the next book.
@londonworkman76175 жыл бұрын
Adrien Watson Fair argument. But I feel as many keep forgetting just how long the Emperor has lived. Remember, he’s lived through countless wars, atrocities, and has seen great empires fall and crumble. He was there at mankind’s peak, and he was there to witness its downfall and lowest points. With all the bloodshed, corruption, and evil he’s seen, it would only be reasonable to assume he’d go cold to a certain point. Hence, why many of his sons state they feel as if they’re tools. Then again, it differs from author to author, and I’d much prefer that Black library would follow the more fatherly emperor in the near future. I also haven’t read about the golden one or retconned perpetual that I’ve been told Horus killed. What book was that in?

TBH it's not just Primarchs who can see through the golden facade of the Emperor. The Blood Angel released from prison in The Master of Mankind, (one of the Crusader Host), is led towards the Golden Throne along with multiple skitarii and guard regiments, and as they enter the main room of the Imperial Dungeon are commanded not to turn around, just keep marching towards the portal gate. Many still look round and are frozen to the spot, their minds unravelling with the rapture and despair. The Blood Angel can't help glancing behind and gasps as he sees the Emperor behind the doors they entered, far above upon a humming throne of cables, while the ordinary guardsmen obviously see a figure of light, the Blood Angel sees an ordinary man, no taller than average and of no distinguishing features, in abject agony, his eyes tightly shut with the pain, hands firmly gripping the arms of the throne and nails dug into the surface. Fortunately he's then pushed on by his Custodes handler into the portal and on into the webway, and the story continues, otherwise he'd have lost his mind looking upon the Master of Mankind. Obviously this might be the author's writing at fault, but it could just as easily be that the pressure and mental strength it takes to power the golden throne is sapping the Emperor's energy to such a degree that the mask is slipping, and perhaps even the ordinary men and women of the guard and skitarii saw him too.

I think the Emperor was very intrigued by Corax because his liberation of Deliverance is a micro form of the Emperors dream for the Imperium. Corax didn't seek power, he used the power he was gifted for the freedom for his people....LITERALLY what the Emperor is and wants too. Perhaps Corax became exactly the man Emps wanted, even when torn from his father's upbringing, he became the warrior that was intended for #19

Sounds like Corax was another of the Emperor's favorites and trusted Corax would know him for who is and there would be no problems or complications with his meeting. Another point to is that this is another reference to the Emperor watching his children in their incubation pods. Something that wasn't necessary or of benefit to him or the Imperium. It just shows he had feelings and interest in each of them for them not what they were or could be. Most new fathers do watch their children sleeping in the nursery. I personally found watching my son sleeping through the glass of the nursery after he was born to be very relaxing and happy experience. Given the Impression Guilliman had upon his return and meeting with the Emperor, and then taking the 30K-view into account, the question whether he played the affection part or lost it after the millennia is propably an intended design, maybe even as his disguise of the Emperors personality ; after all, he did his best to give Chaos as little intel on him as possible.

I think every primarch represents a side of the Emperor, and how the Emperor reacts to them is a reflection of how he perceives himself. Perturabo is the cold and calculating, ruthless side of the Emperor; the Emperor sees it as necessary, but can't bring himself to love it. In Corax, he sees his hope for peace, in Vulcan he sees his humanity, and in Magnus he sees his ambition for humanity. In Sanguinius he sees his striving to take the wretch that humanity has become and making it something better. So, in a sense, all the primarchs are truly his sons. One exception would be Angron. Angron would be a part of the Emperor that could empathize with humans, but he was corrupted beyond saving, which explains why Angron was spared, but also why the Emperor essentially gave up on him after understanding the butcher's nails couldn't be removed without killing him.

With the description of landing the craft via psychic powers I can't help but get this mental image of Big E in his gold power armor, leaning back in a giant recliner with a purple medieval style coronation cloak with white ermine, with a giant martini in one hand and a gold cane in the other. with a pistol grip pump in his lap, suitably sized and gold plated of course. and when the door opens he's blastin "California Love". that or Keep Their Heads Ringin.

I dig many of your contemporaries on the “tube”.., most of em’ are GREAT; honestly.Though your emotion is evocative, and expresses how the emperor truly feels about the primarchs...his sons. Having a son of my own, it’s evident. Your enthusiasm is contagious (that’s good😇). I’ve listened to many of your episodes, all wonderfully done .. Please Sir.., keep up the great job you do. I’m not really sure how to interpret how the emperor sees his sons. In some books he seems to genuinely care about them, but in others like Master of Mankind, when he shows a custodian a vision of the past he says the primarchs are “godlings that insist they are my children”. (Paraphrasing there)
@wolflordrho5 жыл бұрын
Yeah master of mankind gave us a very different emperor. I always found adb is much more suited to writing chaos storylines. Still had some great moments though! The great thing about the lore is we can all have our own likes and dislikes yet still enjoy it!
@Matt-oj2kl5 жыл бұрын
I just choose to ignore adb’s version of the emperor. Making the emperor non caring for his sons makes him a boring character. On top of that, if the emperor didn’t care for his sons he wouldn’t have held back on horus.
@fedupN5 жыл бұрын
ADB is the exception to how the Emperor is portrayed. Even from the beginning of the lore, the Emperor loved his sons. The final battle with Horus is a great example of this. Horus recollections are written that way, which syncs up with Corax, Magnus, Gulliman, and Sanguinius recollections. Even Malcador's notes indicates the Big E cared. ADB is a great writer, but should stick to Chaos. And leave his daddy issues out of things, tah much.
@Jagonath5 жыл бұрын
@@wolflordrho Yes! ADB is my favorite writer, but he's RED TEAM no matter what he says. Clearly the Emperor loved his "sons" even if he didn't see them as literal sons. He murdered every single priest in the GALAXY... but refuses to kill Lorgar at Monarchia?
@theannouncer55385 жыл бұрын
Jago Sevetar true. I think the emperor loved them back when he was still flesh and blood, but I think when you’ve lived for as long as he has, love can be a little difficult to outwardly express. In 40k though, I think the emperor is way too detached from humanity for the word love to hold real meaning for him, he might just feel like staying on the throne is something he is fated to do.

I feel the same as you Wolf Lord,my favourite moments are when The Emperor is displaying his humanity.in devestation of baal dante notes that the biggest surprise about Bobby G is how human he is 'like humanity distilled 100 times' so i have to believe that The Emperor is even more so,its just that most dont get to see it because they are so completely overwhelmed by his power and majesty.I dont subscribe at all to The Emperor being this distant detatched godlike almost alien being,its just that he is so ancient and his responsibility as the master of a whole species requires him to be above baseline humanity and the concerns of each individual amongst the countless trillions of people because he has to do whats best for every human in the galaxy not just at the time of the heresy/crusade but to ensure peace and safety for the human race in the millenia to come.it ultimately didnt work out the way He wanted but that does not mean his intentions werent pure,they absolutely were in my opinion...also thanks once again for another amazing video 👏👏👏

Corax and his relationship with the emperor is an interesting one. He did get a lot of the Emp’s trust but I truly think that was down to the humanity shown in the first meeting. With the likes of Curze and Angron, you can see why he took the stance he did but the sincerity and open honesty put Corax meant otherwise. First video from you I’ve checked out and I really liked it. Gonna end up binging primarch lore no doubt. Whilst the 40k universe is amazing, there’s just something about the heresy that pulls me in. It’s mainly down to the human stories of brother vs brother that sets the stage for the most horrific of conflicts. Keep up the good work.

I think that the emperor truly gives a damn. He was the peak of humanity. He was a good and humble man. He had rid himself of humanity in the fight with horus. Yes he razed monarchia. But i like to speculate he had a bigger purpose in mind to do so. But in the end. He likely just sees the primarchs as tools now. Though the star child is wandering around.

WLR- Yeah, the Emp lovesd Vulkan and Corax, but he also felt that way about Sanguinius and Magnus, wh had blatant non-human traits. At the same time, personality-wise, Magnus and Sanguinius had very human ways about them. A "base". As powerful and advanced as he designed them to b, it seems that human humility, compassion, curiosity and, basically "good", were highly valued and embraced by the Emporer. It the novels, even Horus was written as very "down to earth" and connected to humans and his men.. The truth is, the Emp admired the same human qualities, that most humans admire. Which brings even more, well, humanity to his character. We can see more evidence of this in his relationship with Malcador, whom, although powerful, is very "Gandalf-Like", in his human attributes.
@TDBoedy5 жыл бұрын
I think that Corax given what we know now and what we see here in this meeting was certainly very strong in his potential as a psyker - strong enough that with untrained will power alone he could pierce the emperor's glamour. It would not surprise me if he was meant to be able to use the Eternity Gate. Whenever he returns he would be my bet for facing down Magnus.
@Kristian.B.Kristiansen5 жыл бұрын
And that is the great question! Did the Emperor love his "sons? Or where they just his weapon systems. And we will only have the final answer, when we see The Emperor fight the warmaster. Did he hold back out of love, as the old lore stats, or was he not strong enough to just kill the champion of chaos? Only when it comes down to that, will we know for sure. Was the love for his son stronger than his dream, or did he never love them at all?

@@wolflordrho Yeah man. You make very good points about how different writers have clearly taken different stances on the subject. Since the lore obviously shows both versions of this neither is right or wrong. Which version we want probably says more about us than it does the lore = ) It's also possible that both are true enough in different contexts. The line where Guilliman says "it was like conversing with a star" (roughly) has always struck me; so much efficient imagery in that statement.

yes it's from Vengeful Spirit. It's a great little conversation! I'll do an upload on it one day. But it's a bit over blown about Guilliman in my opinion. The Emperor doesn't seem too concerned. And the Lion is going to Ultramar of his own accord. Not because the Emperor has asked him too.

Really happy to have found your channel, as I have loved the lore from the Horus heresy. Just my two cents worth on the Emperor, he seems the ultimate contradiction: everything to everyone, being able to project himself however he wants to each individual. I'm sure there is some depth of humanity still there, but I would never fully trust him. As I would never be certain what I was feeling was genuine, or instilled by the Emperor. The impression of John Gramattica from the novel Legion resonated the most true for me.
@korgull84485 жыл бұрын
My personal theory is the Emperor in his human form did love his sons, but the entity that exists now entombed on the golden throne doesn't have that capacity. I think that is what Roboute Guilliman picked up on. He can only perceive the part of the Emperor that's left. The cold logical part that built them as weapons. The rest is scattered in the warp I feel. That is what I like to think at least. Love this channel.
