Earl was indeed, the greatest of all time. He set the standard that all others strived for, and as I'm a lefty, I used to watch his style for ideas to improve my own game. My dad and I would watch the PBA matches on Saturdays, after I came home from my junior bowling league games. Dad was an avid bowler, and left this world with an average in the high 160's.

Earl was the greatest. I love how he always talked to himself, telling himself what he had to do before every shot. Maybe I should have tried that a little more often lol.

It's fun and painful both to watch these vintage matches. I had 8 uncles who were bowlers. Nine including my dad. Two of them were pinsetter Mechanic's. I was a pinchaser my first job at 15 years old. Bowled my first 300 at 16. My parents just didn't care about my future. I see clearly what happened now that I'm 65. I was a talented young man. I have kids now. Not going to do what was done to me to them. I would rather die and rot an old man and have my kids make it in life.

earl was the greatest,,he use to win when other lefties on tour didn't cash..remember, I believe he made the tv finals in almost 30% of the tournaments he bowled..thanks for posting

I think the converse of your statement is more true: when the breaks go your way, people perceive you as great. Earl could have easily had different, much worse, results in frames 1, 7, and 8, being that the ball went through the face. However, he never left a split, and even struck once to capture a double. Not one of Earl's better matches, but at least he kept himself in it until the end with spares.

In the 8th frame, Earl did pull up and made somewhat of an errant shot, but turned it into a strike. It's because someone called out before he released the ball and that can disturb the bowler.

Watching the Trophy Moment - you're reminded again what a total class act Dick Weber was. Always wondered why Junior grew up to be such a twaat, with his dad as an example like that...

But as someone who taught kids for several years, think the young people who "pick it up" because they think Belmo made it cool... they're out of their minds, but it is their choice to make... Yeah, crybaby Pete. He always looks like he bit into a lemon. He is diseased with Little Man's Syndrome. In the past, I've had the displeasure of working alongside people like that...

Earl's great forward roll as the ball hits the pins carried that strike in the 8th, a lot of other lefthanders balls would have hooked through the pins and left a split.

That gold Mark X ball was a honey. Too bad they would wrinkle up after a while and chip out at the drills. Always looked like a carmel white dot drilled sideways, sorta. Thanks for the clip.

For some weird reason, I thought it was a cool habit when I watched him do it years ago, but now it's kind of annoying. He stopped doing it for the most part years later, and I wonder if his game improved as a result.
