Also on the subject of using the runway to land I think that's probably correct too from personal experience. Seeing CH-53s and MV-22 Ospreys land, both of which had retractable landing gear, they always took off and landed on the runway similar to a fixed wing aircraft unless they were being scrambled or landing on board a ship (for obvious reasons). Even the Hueys and Cobras which used skids would "land" on the runway and "taxi" to parking which really meant flying slowly just several feet off the ground. I imagine it's mostly due to the need to maintain orderly traffic control on the airfield.

Hind is a flying tank indeed… until the Stinger Missile was invented. Good solid chopper! It was originally an unarmed troop carrier, hence the armor. But crews started adding guns and rockets and it impressed the Soviet leaders, so a dedicated attack version was built, the Mi-24. It could also still carry 6 commandos in the version you used here, and you can see the doors on the sides as well. It’s no wonder the US military stole one out of the Libyan desert at the end of the Cold War.

I don't know much about the Hind, but I am trained in flying actual helicopters. You seem to be flying this thing like a fixed wing aircraft. You can just hover the thing a foot or two off the ground for taxi and takeoff. Landings you can slow to zero airspeed (or near zero) before touching down. You can try pitching up and reducing your collective to "hit the brakes" (pitching up past the horizon, lower collective to not gain altitude), and on your attack runs I think you will get better results if you come in low. Being a few hundred feet off the ground and taking AA fire from kilometres away doesn't make sense. You can come in 10 feet off the ground completely unseen then just pop up and take an attack run as you approach the targets... Thanks for the videos, they are always entertaining.

I logged a lot of hours in a heli-sim game called Coastal Heroes. The best advice I can give for someone starting out with helicopters is "the copter will move in the direction you move the stick" This can be forward, backward, side-to-side, or any direction. Your nose doesn't have to be pointed in the direction you are wanting to move. It's totally a totally different way of thinking than an airplane. You can do some really cool maneuvers when you learn the tricks.
@Cryshalo3 жыл бұрын
Well, crew chief, a couple small bits fell off, but she still flew, so nothing too important, surely?
@janest1002 жыл бұрын
The collective adjustment angle of the rotor blades should be 9° to 10°. Then the speed is around 240-250 km per hour. At that speed, the helicopter maneuvers better. The turning radius at a speed of 300 km is too large and it takes a very long time to turn. Also, the approach speed to the target is unnecessarily high. It lands on the undercarriage wheels at a speed of 80 km. You must not exceed the speed of 160 km with the chassis extended. Then it bends the plates of the chassis covers and in that case the chassis does not even have to lock even if it is inserted and the lights (red) indicating the correct locking of the suspensions do not light up. There is one special power mode indicator on the dashboard. It is to the left of the outlet gas temperature indicator. It has three triangles in the center that are set according to the current state of the atmosphere, and on the sides there are small yellow indicators of engine performance. This is the only indicator that interests you in a real fight. The middle red triangles indicate the three modes. The lowest is a travel ticket on which you can fly for any length of time. In the middle is the nominal mode, which is limited to one hour of operation and then cooling in travel mode for 30 min. The highest mode is take-off or maximum and there the time is limited to 15 minutes of use, in reality the engine lasts more than 15 minutes, but flying the entire mission at maximum power is nonsense and in reality you would probably screw it up. The Mi-24 responds well to the rudder, but below a speed of 200 km per hour. That way you can reduce the turning radius and shorten the turning time. And landing like an airplane ???? This is only done when one engine is out of service. Take off like an airplane OK - as long as it is fully loaded and there is a high altitude but normally it would only do that...
@mdsx013 жыл бұрын

Note the turn and slip indicator below the artificial horizon. If the ball is outside the turn, he needs to use *less*. The hind is not known for a short turn circle. It’s meant to be fast, come off the target before overflying it and getting the hell back to its IP and starting again. The Hind is a big, heavy bitch. It'd take quite a bit of time to kill off its momentum and turn straight back in on an almost 300 kph attack run, better to just keep the momentum and speed up. And he could attack while stationary or in a near hover but without any terrain to dip behind after the attack he'd be leaving himself dangerously open to AA fire. I think he handled that convoy attack pretty well.

Actually this is how you are supposed to employ the Hind. Fast and low. It doesn't like to hover and make quick direction changes when loaded with stores and fuel. @@Wolfpack345 it was hard to see as your perspective didn’t show the lower panels (understandable, you were flying and needed to see out the windows lol), but it looked by the takeoff that it was offline. This can happen if you make sudden collective changes as the sudden demand on the turbines when you increase the blade angle can momentarily slow the rotor speed while the turbines catch up. If rotor speed falls under 85%, it’ll trip the generators, momentarily losing the gyros. They’ll come back online and re-cage, but you’ll need to reset the four autopilots. You can alleviate this by not shoving the collective power up suddenly. Slow, careful movement works better (think like the Me 262 throttle in il2 but with a lot less exploding if you mess up). The hover mode kinda needs you to be in a hover already to help it out and to be honest, hovering in a fully fuelled and laden Hind is not going to go well for you. You are correct in a separate comment thread that the Hind needs speed for life, treat it more like a CAS aircraft than a helo. Also, Vne for this model is 350kph. Try to keep combat speeds around 250-300 for most effective turn radius and performance. It could easily have been the AAA. Either way, she’s a champ for taking a licking and going on ticking!

@@ghostdog688 Awesome! Thanks for all the tips, I appreciate it. I'll try to keep my eyes on the AP indicators a bit more haha. Like you said they are not in a spot you can easily see while flying about.

@@Wolfpack345 don’t worry if you do lose them, it’s good to be aware of them, and they’ll help, but it’s more for keeping you with a stable firing platform than for making flying easier. Better to aviate, navigate and communicate first. Tactics, weapons and warheads on foreheads second, points for style last ;)

Yes yes and yes! This is what I was expecting!

Have you tried taking down two F-16s in really bad weather in that? Like...uhh...a blizzard in Alaska? But i guess you must crazy to fly it that kind of weather. But I heard someone did it in a Hind D... ;)

Hey Wolfpack great video on the hind!! Do you have the f14 module?

Not sure how good an idea a rolling landing is when you're aerodynamically unstable and have lost a lot of weight lmao

What is your controller set up for flying choppers? Thanks for all the great sim content.

Do you constantly use the rudder so it doesnt spin? what if you want to spin to the opposite direction? And are you using a collective?
