It looks like every flight is returning to their last way point after attacking, so that's why they're flying back over the target once the attack is done (and drawing fire). Perhaps set their destination on the far side of the target before ordering the attack, so they continue on to that waypoint after they're done?

As seen in the first attack of this vid: Strike as simultaneously as possible with as many aircraft as possible and the flak will scatter and be nearly of no effect. Great series btw!

He would've been the most agressive Japanese admiral of the entire war. Contrary to most of them (Yamamoto included) who are famous or infamous because of their overcautiousness and inflexibility.

A bit of my experience fof submarine strikes: when you hold mouse over the torp launcher, it shows both the angle to the target (big red dot) and the angle for the torp to go (yellow sector). This may allow you to time your strikes more precisely, launching torps in such a way they do not need to turn when they leave the sub, and thus negating the turning radius error. This is especially valuable when you try to hit the bow of the ship charging at you (however stupid this idea may sound, sometimes it works): you turn until it shows 0 degrees, and then you launch straight at it. Or you just point your sub perpendicular to the convoy path and wait to launch for the near-perfect 90 degree angle between the ship and the torp.

My current favorite way to deal with the 2 destroyer and 6 merchant suicide fleet is to send Vals in one wave of 6 groups, 2 groups on each destroyer and then one each for any of merchants behind them. Then followed up with 6 groups of Kates with torpedoes. Send the Kates at max speed on a torpedo run to mop up the survivors, sometimes you need a third run but usually the first two does it. You get more consistent sinking with torpedoes and you don't loose very many Katies once the Destroyers are destroyed.

I really like your immersive little retelling of current events in the start of each episode. If a game maker could simulate something like that in the future it would really put you right back into the game when continuing your campaign.

To answer your question at 4:51, looking through the stock save files I can confirm that the AI does start with the same amount of troops, supplies, fuel, and engineering and they replenish these resources at the same rate as well however their costs to upgrade a base are about 25% cheaper (ex. 1250 for player to 1000 for AI) I believe this is dependent on difficulty) the AI should have unlimited command points as well as I couldn't seem to find theirs anywhere in the file. On a side note, should you ever decide to want to try a custom campaign (i.e. different spawn points, different campaign "win" objectives, no ship restrictions, more/less command points per unit destroyed, etc), let me know. I know how to modify the save files for just about all of it and would be happy to help you make a custom campaign

The active sonar only works at 110 decibels and at 1 nautical mile however, the passive works at 11 nautical miles

This is really a great series, never get tired of those aerial attacks keeping the enemy at bay until large ship engagements which are bound to happen so it's good you are saving ships ammo for those encounters to come.

More than a wider spread. Aim at the furthest destroyer 1st. Then aim for the closest destroyer second with the slightly wider spread.

Great Video! These Carrier-based attacks are brutal, rips through so many of their fleet. I would like to see the ships break formation more and make the attacks a little harder to hit.

First battle, could have concentrated 2 flights on each of the destroyers the rest on the merchant and after the destroyers were destroyed, use the sub with its deck gun to mop up what left of the merchants. Or maybe launch 12 Vals and 12 Kates. Split the Valsin to 2 flights of 6 to deal with the destroyers and assign 2 Kates to each cargo ship.

I hope they make a Battle of the Atlantic pack for this game. It would be awesome to command the Bismarck or Tirpitz (or maybe even a finished Graf Zeppelin) against the Royal Navy. Really enjoy this series and UBOAT, which I bought because of your videos even though I can barely run it.

Interesting... In my game I sunk one carrier w/ a wolfpack, and then ended up sinking all but one of the BBs at this point with a combination of wolfpacks and mass aircraft. (I've found Kates w/ 800kg bombs quite effective en masse. Speaking of Kates, you don't have any Jakes handy, try scouting with Kates w/o a payload. Range is very similar.) Only then did I manage to gain enough momentum to push my entire fleet out from Guadalcanal and track down the final carrier. The reason for sheltering the fleet in and around Guadalcanal was due to a devastating defeat in which Kongo herself was sunk and I was left with little else but my wolfpacks to stem the tide of Americans. This prompted a major reconsideration of my tactics until recently. It also lead to the invasion of the Florida Islands by the Americans. The battle of which is ongoing, but currently the Americans are roughly outnumbered 5:1. (Also had a DD beach itself and my first sub kill was by rising up underneath an enemy sub after surface dashing over it. Originally I tried to torpedo it twice before I realized that at PD, the torpedoes swim too shallow to hit.)

Get Junyo, Hiyo, and Ryujo, and park them off Guadalcanal to chew up convoys. That frees up the big CVs for large operations.

On rare occasions, your sending flights of aircraft to target lone submarines. Perhaps try using a different aircraft. The Val can hold bombs. But another craft (the one that holds torpedoes), can exchange its armament for depth charges. also, you could consider launching 2 flights of 2 aircraft. Each a different configuration, to give you options. ie: 2x Val with bombs and 2x other plane with depth charges. Merge these flights and be assured of a submarine being destroyed. ps. I do realise you are limited on where these types of craft can launch from. But it may be something worth keeping in mind.

Love watching this series! Are there flying boats in the game, like Kawanishi H8K "Emily"? They could carry bombs or depth charges and when finding a sub attack it, no need to send Vals. When attacking 2 targets with a sub, shoot at the farthest first with reduced torpedo speed. Work on a solution for the closest and fire with max torpedo speed. Time it right and the hits are within seconds, no chance for evasion (used that in Silent hunter III)

Obviously backseating/hindsight but I would use 4 torpedoes on a wide-ish spread and fire sooner on that second destroyer. Lowering time to maneuver can be more valuable than accuracy.

I wish that there was a way where both factions could only bring in more ships after their historical commission date. For example, in the game it states that the Agano Class is available in late November 1942, when in reality only the Agano herself was ready for combat. They should do this with the Akizuki Class destroyers and most of the American destroyers. I also wish that they take into consideration some of the ships that had to miss the campaign due to refit and repair back in their respective ports. For example, the Mogami in-game is available for service when in reality she spent most of 1942 in the repair docks back in Japan after taking heavy damage during the Battle of Midway.

if the subs at periscope depth, you cant depth charge them in this game, but shooting with guns helps manually, you have to click cease fire

does not matter what the solution is on target number 2 DD. as soon as the first eats a torp the second will turn and react which makes the solution null and void. better to just do manual straight away afterwards so number 2 target has no time to react

I thought the '5' on the depth charge screen referring to the delay in the trigger detonating (thus setting the explosion depth) rather than the time interval between patterns?

Isn't it counterproductive to wait for a high solution for the second salvo of torpedoes? The other destroyer will immediately change course/speed when the first target has been hit, after all, unless you can set the torpedo speeds so that the impacts will happen at the same time between the two salvos. The high solution will basically become meaningless if the target has been alerted and is given enough time. A lower solution but more torpedoes with a wider spread, hitting very soon after the first target has been hit, wouldn't allow the second target to react appropriately in time.

The game needs an option to set an egress point after making an air attack. Hopefully that would allow you to keep your Vals from circling back over AA after a strike.

So a single depth charge detonation is enough to completely destroy a compartment of a sub - sinking it, while a destroyer can eat 2 torpedoes and maintain flank speed. I wonder if they are modelling just how much explosives are packed in these torpedoes, those should pop destroyers right open.

fun fact: the japanese dive bombers where only allowed to hit the front and back of a ship, they werent allowed to go on their sides, in my opinion that would be effective in this game.

Against DDs, I am only assuming, but build solutions for both DDs first. Target one DD, max solution, then target second DD, max solution then fire on that DD, then re-target first DD and fire torps. Solution should be max on the retargetted DD?

US has a plethora of battleships and heavy cruisers. Better commission a ample amount of submersibles. Japan's surface fleet (you, Wolfpack) alone, cannot cope with massive surface fleet of the US!

You might have a decent point, along with the fact that there are more Flecthers than IJN has Destroyers. But it really doesn't change to course of a war if the enemy can never use its advantage.

@@adamtruong1759 That is correct. But, submersibles Are inexpensive. Efficient to. On the other hand, capital ships (Cruisers, Battleships and Carriers) cost an arm and a leg. Plus, they cannot be replaced in a reasonable timeframe! 😥

I hope Washington will lose it’s cool and send in another 2 carriers to contest to Coral Sea, only this time they are competent enough to to launch scout planes and strike planes ahead of time. I’d love to see an actual carrier vs carrier.

They have the potential to, at this point in the war the Americans still have USS Wasp and USS Saratoga, not to mention the first of the Essex class ships should be nearing completion by now. I know USS Ranger was stationed mostly in the Atlantic, but I do wonder if they will give the Ai the opportunity to send her into the fray if there is a severe lack of carriers.
