Best fleet maneuver and use of torpedoes so far! 20:30 That immediate manual launch when the T was crossed by the Japanese flotilla forced the enemy to turn a sharp angel, and 21:35 the swing movement of your own fleet immediately crossed the T. Those two moves changed the entire setup of the surface battle.

I think having a light cruiser with sonar capabilities in amongst the heavies will help spot those torpedoes a lot earlier. At least that's what I've found to work the best. I try and turn on sonor when I think torps r in the water and it seems to help.

not sure if active sonar detects torpedoes, thats normally a passive sonar thing. Atlantas usually have sonar and depth charges, and I believe the Mahans have the best passive.

@@PerfectDeath4 IRL that is definitely true, whether that is part of the game I don't know for sure but it would make a lot of sense. In battle I always try and keep my heavies a but slower like around 15-20 knots so that could be part of it as well. I did get caught once and I had no warning hardly at all but in that instance I didn't have an Atlanta class in my lineup. So that is why I always just assumed that it's sonor whether passive or active helped but I honestly do not know.

Has Killerfish hinted at any improvement to ship damage models? Right now sections just get darker and turrets point the wrong way if they're knocked out. Seems to me like there's a huge opportunity to improve damage effects.

Bombs in general got nerfed. Dauntlesses can only carry 1000lb SAP and AP bombs, which do less damage than the GP 1000 lb they previously carried, but I think the GP bomb got nerfed, too.

IJN Val's are even worse, a wing of dauntless's will reliably sink a DD if you send the whole wing on one target... However an entire Wing of Val's needs 2-3 try's to sink one target and well your not going to be able to re arm and fly to target three times before it escapes lol..... IJN has to rely on the Kates and they are easy to shoot down.... However the American Avengers have the american dud torpedo problem and typically the Dauntless is the american crutch....

Ah, that's why I always prefer to bunch my aircraft up on a single target, rather than dispersing. The argument is statistical: assuming the same three sorties, you've sank one destroyer by dispersing and potentially sank three by Dauntlesses alone by focusing on a single target each time and just making sure it's dead. Plus, sinking reduces flak and less flak=fewer losses=more bombs thrown around=more kills=more points. I've learned this from you! Or am I missing something? Your seamanship in the surface battle was glorious. You've reformed your battle line to an advantageous position, moved your DDs forward, launched your torps in a cross pattern to ensure hits regardless of evasion, broke the enemy's line in the process and picked them off with guns, while they had to dodge (and eat!) fish. Also notice, that unlike your previous battles, you did not try to escape, but aggressively went forward with a full intent to kill- this has rendered you infinitely better results and fewer losses. Those are very complex, 4d chess-tier tactics right there- I need to use those in my own engagements!

great fight..... in my playthrough.... the Japanese tried to take Rennell Is but i beat them there..... over the last three weeks they have attempted repeated assaults.... i have to keep a SAG in the region to respond if needed... very fun indeed....

Line Ahead with Destroyers leading is better than a battle line formation. Use the last destroyer in line to fire starshells. Light Cruisers next, and heavys in the rear. This makes it easier to split off your Destroyers for torpedo attacks, while targeting enemy DDs with gunfire, and lets your Cruisers focus on theirs. Also, the bigger the gun, the longer the range! Another reason to put your heavy cruisers (CA) in the rear, and the Light Cruisers (CL) in front of them. And Lights can do better at detecting torpedoes!

Nice to see your finally allowing AP rounds to be used seeing most war ships had extra armor to protect them and the HE rounds were only good for setting fires and getting magazines to explode most times!

Wolfpack I would love to see you play a survival campaign in SH4 using a surface ship of your choice. There are many IJN, Kriegsmarine and Allied naval surface ships to choose from on SubSim. Example: i have played the KMS Admiral Ruko (a Deutschland class Cruiser like Admiral Scheer), for years and its pretty awesome to be the lone raider in the Indian.

Not sure if you know this you prolly do but the two buttons under your list of ships on the left, one selects air or sea units the other selects all of the units in that list, I usually click on the top unit then hit the plus symbol it selects them all easier.

Mos tof the US guns were dual purpose so could fire anti surface and also flak rounds but I recently learned that 8in and ever the main battleship 16in guns also had flak shells...I visited the USS Alabama a while back and the fire control computers were crazy advanced for the time and the 5 , 8 and even 16 inch main guns could accurately fire on squadrons of planes

Two Nisshins sunk, but only one was built. 13,000 tons, 6 5.5 inch guns, making her tougher in the main armament than a typical modern IJN destroyer, excepting torpedoes of course. Congrats on getting 13 points from an alternate history. Love this game, but it has its weirdities.

Why not attack from the stern to the bow? Wouldnt it presents fewer guns shooting anti-air? and higher percentage of hits.

Wolfpack has tested this a few times in his Japanese campaign, and attacking from stern to bow, at best, was about as effective as attacking from the side. But often times, it was actually worse than attacking from the side.

a torpedo hit on the bow of a ship is one of the worst places to get hit by a torpedo despite often being a vaguely empty space with no critical or fire-prone systems as it will have literal boatloads of water flowing inside due to the ship inertia pushing the hole into the water in addition to the static water pressure. additionally a dropped bow will limit the ship speed because of the added drag leading to lower maneuverability and ultimately to a sitting duck situation.

Use Avengers with rockets to get rid of the DD's. You can do a side on or rear approach to get the best bang for your buck. It's funny, I'm on my second playthrough and have never had anything attack Port Morsby. I have finally learned how to do the manual torpedoes and gunnery. Well it's still a bit shaky but it's mostly working. I have been enjoying your videos and it was the main reason I bought the game. Maybe you should get a commission from the game developer for your promotional videos. Oh BTW for anyone interested. Do Not Save The Game in the middle of an engagement. There is a bug that will reload the same ships. You will notice that you will suddenly have 2 of the same ships used in the engagement. The enemy will also have the same ships. You cannot sink the ghost ships. The only thing you can do is hope you have a good save to fall back on or start over. There is a discussion about this on the forum. I had this happen to me on the first playthrough and thankfully I had a good save from a few hours before.

Just an FYI.....for more hits and fewer misses when dropping bombs, drop parallel to the ships course as opposed to perpendicular. The only time you want to drop perpendicular is when dropping torpedoes.

I don't know if the WotS mod have model this but in Kancolle the "Seaplane Tender" can transport quite much troops and supplies. I guess maybe this is the group that just resupply Guadalcanal......

One way is to use spotting fire, so the ships will wait until the shells they fire land before firing again as that gives a short boost to solution. Smoke and bad weather will also mess with solution. I'm not sure if other ships/guns firing at same target reduce solution, it historically did and is simulated in some naval strategy games like Rule the Waves 2. Enemy ships moving sill also cause solution problems as will moving your own ships. Top speed and sea state will also effect it. I'd recommend practicing manual gun firing, its really accurate once you get the hang of it, almost cheating tbh and you can tunnel vision easy. =P

I am curious as to why you are not upgrading rennal Island. Seems likes you have to go to far to rearm and repair. Having a strong airfield there would be helpful in dealing with enemy surface groups

@@brokenwolf2568 neither one of those ships had 3 quintuple torpedo launchers that you saw on that ship. Also in this game clearly if he wanted he could build as many ships he wanted as long as he gets the Command points, I would think that applies to the AI as well.

In the recent TTE versions, the seaplane tenders works as light carriers, deploying Jake as dive bombers a squadrons and Rufe for CAP missions.

Posted this on 13 and 14 in hope to get my questions answered… Thanks and great videos. I have two tactical strategy questions, and one question about Mods. These questions are pretty basic so please bear with me. 1. I understand that the optimal torpedo attack is perpendicular to the target ship as this presents the largest target. But what about dive bombing? There seems to me to be two advantages to attacking aft to fore on the target rather than a beam attack, in that the target is “In sights” longer. Also, only aft anti a can defend. In a beam attack, both fore and aft AA can fire both on the way in and on the way out. Plus if the attack is in the direction of the center of formation, all of the other ships get to bang away as well. Am I missing something? 2, Does attacking “out of the sun” offer any advantage to the attacking aircraft in the game? And finally: 3. Where does one acquire the mods. I checked the steam website and there is no button to download any mods?

Use rockets on destroyers with avengers! 3 planes per ship knocks them out quick. Unless you are going for realism, then continue with what you’re doing.

TTE mod by default removes avenger rockets, because the USN didn't arm avengers with those at this point in the war. There is a sub mod on TTE that adds the rockets back in.

Attacking the rear of the convoy keeps most of the guns off you hit the last ship pull away from the fleet and not go through that gauntlet of AA
