Battle of Wolin 2.8.2014 from my "first person" sight.
Members of our squad were from viking and slavic (and frankish :) ) reenactment czech groups Styrke, Gunnar, Jaga and Velkomoravané, leaded by jarl Kraken of Gunnar.

I was in the opposite line with the spear. Tell to your czech brother's to stop cheating and start to dying when somebody is stabbing them all the time. You don't know the rules or you don't want to respect them, please avoid Wolin next year.

why dont you use shield and spear? isnt this supposed to be reenactment? So why do you seperate spear and shield when evey one who doesnt use a dane axe should have aspear too?

bc thats how it often was in the viking age as well as in many other times in history: there were soldiers with just spears and then there were soldiers with shields and short melee weapons. this wasnt universal (think of the greek hoplites) but having shields and spears be separate is totally accurate@@giftzwerg7345

Safety reasons. Most of the people cannot wield spear in one hand confidently enough to slow down the thrust or avoid stabbing someone in face if the attack is deflected from intented direction.

Seems a lot of fun, but the rules are weird from what I see and know about these battles at Wolin. You are supposed to drop "dead" when someone hits you? From all those people someone is bound to not respect that rule anyway, either voluntarily or involuntarily. I believe best way for someone to be out of the fight is for them to fall down.

For all the people complaining about cheating czechs i made a short list of cheaters here: 2:03 - on the left side light trousers, guy gets blow in his thigh, above knee 5:21 - spear above shields? Idiotic and against rules 6:10 - on the right side guy with dane axe in light yellow leather gets blow in his thigh 6:24 - the beard guys with spear in leather lamellar gets spear blow in his side 7:52 - leather lamellar, gets couple of blows but makes "im still standin!" 8:01 - guys gets hit, but hes fighting longer and hits guys who's dead All of them are shot but still fighting.

i think its difficult to realise that you got hit, most of times its like a tickle and they all wear armor i think its hard to feel the hit under the armor except you got sriked hardly, doesnt matter its awesome that they react shieldbattles

if you asked me i didnt see enough spears but far too many swords. back then they equalled whats now a nice house with a garage and hot tub. spears were cheaper and have been found way more often. in short there werent hundreds of kings whod fight side by side in line formation.

Did "slavic warriors" or "slavic vikings" use sabres as the guy in first person veiw and is there any dokumentation on this? :D I think of purchase one sabre if that is so :) PLEASE HELP :)

Yes, Magyars and Slavs ( especially eastern) used sabres. And Varangians could use it too. This is a magyar sabre made by Viktor Berbekucz.

They stay just out of reach. When you stay just barely out of reach, you can look for weaknesses and exploit them. If you enter reach, you expose yourself and you usually die within seconds. You might be able to bring a few down with you, so maybe it does pay off to do this, I’m not sure. But this battle is interesting because they remain out of reach and form a line, which is what would usually happen. People are rarely so suicidal that they would jump in the enemy lines (might happen though, with particularly religious or reckless people).

+J.Strauch \Liandri/ Lower leg doesn't count in these battles. Hits from knee and elbow up count. Many festivals go away from that though lately, with full contact battles (without face of course). Fighting style is then totally different, you hide your hands and aim for legs. In real battles spearmen would mainly go for the face and feer ;)
