Love your content Mark. Spot on with the observations as always too. A tip for our much cherished US visitors would also be to try to pronounce place names correctly. Donegal is a good one. We stress the third syllable so it sounds like DunneeGALL. It makes life for the visitor easier when you say the place names as we do. Finally, we speak English and Irish. We never call our native tongue Gaelic. Again the correct use of the term marks you out as someone who knows us well. And we DO love and respect our American friends so stop apologizing to us for the words or actions of your president, no matter who, he (or she) may be.

I find that Europeans deeply misunderstand what most Americans mean when they say they're "Irish" or "German" or "English," etc. It seems to be falsely assumed as them claiming those cultures, or deserving citizenship or something ridiculous. What they're talking about is heritage; family. Every family in America has a story about how they got here. Whether it was from war, famine, slavery, religion, or just better opportunity. That story is important to being a proud American. Our people came to this land from their home countries. So when an American is claiming descent from your culture or country, they aren't trying to butt their way in to a modern society their ancestors never knew, they're instead trying to include you and your nation in the story of America. And your nations and cultures have had an undeniable effect on America, and American people are simply proud of that.

@wolter as an Irish man I'm a big fan of your videos on Ireland and you're advice to Americans on what not to say is appreciated, while it's mildly irritating to hear Americans saying theyre Irish, the big one is Never call us English or British so thank you for that, just for any Americans who Don't understand why, well do you want to be called British or English? Of course not, they once ruled you but you threw them off and gained independence, so did Ireland, you had the American revolution when you defeated the British and gained independence, Ireland also had a revolution and defeated the British and gained independence. So ,Americans, please never call us British.

@@shaunsteele8244 Why do Americans all want to be Irish somehow not have the same if Italian, French or Dutch etc. What is it with the Americans and Ireland? I find it difficult to understand Americans are so Patriotic and proud of being American but can easily flip and tell anyone who will listen they are Irish because they find out a Great, Great, Grate ancestor or have 20% DNA is Irish! Some have never visited, don't know the geography or speak with an Irish accent but suddenly their Irish. @@shaunsteele8244 But that doesn't answer my questions. I know the influx of Irish and many have DNA or relatives of Irish descent but they seem fixated on Irish heritage and no other unless its Native American. Even when the connection is so thin because so far back. Equally I find it interesting that a country of fervent Patriots can suddenly emphasise their Irish credentials, call themselves Irish and think they are still Patriotic Americans. They really say I'm American of Irish decent. Odd when they could have closer links with descendants from another country but ignore it for a tenuous Irish relative some generations back! Particularly when the Irish on arrival in America were looked down upon. 1. Being Catholic. 2. Poor. 3. Ill educated at that time. That's why when Kennedys got elected it was such a big deal, a bit like Obama but, Kennedys were Catholic and of Irish heritage, it had never happened before . Statistically more Germans and the Nordic countries populated America than any other nation.

@@alandillon968 when you're talking about less than 200 years ago, that isn't very far back genetically. My great grandfather was born in Ireland in 1884. America is a unique country because most of us are from "somewhere else". Our nationality is American, but we know our roots are not in America. I don't know too many Americans who are of German or Nordic descent, except maybe in the northern midwest states (Minnesota for example). Most of us are primarily Irish... Here's one I learned that's related to both The Troubles as well as pubs. There's a way to serve beer called black and tan. It's any combination of the two out of three of ale, porter, and stout. The darker beer settles at the bottom of the pint glass, and the lighter beer floats on top. Do not order it as a "black and tan". Order it as a "half and half". The two colors refer to the colors of the uniforms of the police that beat up people during The Troubles.

As an Irish person, I can confirm this is all true. As a side note, I’d like to add that you shouldn’t assume you’ve seen Ireland from just going to one county. Every single county in Ireland has its own culture, it’s own history and in some cases it’s own dialects of Irish. Every single place in Ireland is different. It’s like 32 countries. I live in Longford, and to me Dublin is a weird, alien place with a completely different culture to what I’m used to. You can’t see Ireland in one trip, don’t think that you can.

Rounds are still quite common...and you should at least be seen to be making an effort. I remember once I was in a pub in Dublin with my dad, and I heard this lone american trying to strike up a conversation with a bartender. Too busy of a bar to be successful, I decided to do my bit for Bord Failte and sussed that this lad was travelling alone.. Well got chatting to him, nice lad from California. My dad and myself were just finishing our current pint and it was my shout, so I order two more for us and asked the American what he was drinking, so got him a Smithwicks as well. Well that pint was finishing and my dad shouted for three more, When our pints we coming to their ends, my dad purposely nipped out for a smoke, and the lad took out his wallet, took out a tenner, and then put it back in an reached for another note. I thought, Ah he sussed that 10 euro wouldn't cover 3 drinks. Instead he pulled out a fiver and ordered one for himself. Nothing was said, but as one guide book, quoting some comedian said, that if you skip your round, 'you, your children, and your children's children will forever be known as being a bit tight' lol. My advice to American tourists in terms of rounds, is say no when offered a drink, saying you want to take care of your own, and if after that the person still insists on buying you a drink, its a sign of generoisty without an expectation of a round being bought back.
