We stress the third syllable so it sounds like DunneeGALL. It makes life for the visitor easier when you say the place names as we do. Finally, we speak English and Irish. We never call our native tongue Gaelic. Again the correct use of the term marks you out as someone who knows us well. I find that Europeans deeply misunderstand what most Americans mean when they say they're "Irish" or "German" or "English," etc. It seems to be falsely assumed as them claiming those cultures, or deserving citizenship or something ridiculous. What they're talking about is heritage; family. Every family in America has a story about how they got here. Whether it was from war, famine, slavery, religion, or just better opportunity. That story is important to being a proud American. Our people came to this land from their home countries. So when an American is claiming descent from your culture or country, they aren't trying to butt their way in to a modern society their ancestors never knew, they're instead trying to include you and your nation in the story of America. And your nations and cultures have had an undeniable effect on America, and American people are simply proud of that.

Of course not, they once ruled you but you threw them off and gained independence, so did Ireland, you had the American revolution when you defeated the British and gained independence, Ireland also had a revolution and defeated the British and gained independence. So ,Americans, please never call us British.

Equally I find it interesting that a country of fervent Patriots can suddenly emphasise their Irish credentials, call themselves Irish and think they are still Patriotic Americans. They really say I'm American of Irish decent. Odd when they could have closer links with descendants from another country but ignore it for a tenuous Irish relative some generations back! Particularly when the Irish on arrival in America were looked down upon. 1. Being Catholic. 2. Poor. 3. Ill educated at that time. Here's one I learned that's related to both The Troubles as well as pubs. There's a way to serve beer called black and tan. It's any combination of the two out of three of ale, porter, and stout. The darker beer settles at the bottom of the pint glass, and the lighter beer floats on top. Do not order it as a "black and tan". Order it as a "half and half". @peadarruane65822 жыл бұрын
Rounds are still quite common...and you should at least be seen to be making an effort. I remember once I was in a pub in Dublin with my dad, and I heard this lone american trying to strike up a conversation with a bartender. Too busy of a bar to be successful, I decided to do my bit for Bord Failte and sussed that this lad was travelling alone.. Well got chatting to him, nice lad from California. My dad and myself were just finishing our current pint and it was my shout, so I order two more for us and asked the American what he was drinking, so got him a Smithwicks as well. Well that pint was finishing and my dad shouted for three more, When our pints we coming to their ends, my dad purposely nipped out for a smoke, and the lad took out his wallet, took out a tenner, and then put it back in an reached for another note. I thought, Ah he sussed that 10 euro wouldn't cover 3 drinks. Instead he pulled out a fiver and ordered one for himself. Nothing was said, but as one guide book, quoting some comedian said, that if you skip your round, 'you, your children, and your children's children will forever be known as being a bit tight' lol. My advice to American tourists in terms of rounds, is say no when offered a drink, saying you want to take care of your own, and if after that the person still insists on buying you a drink, its a sign of generoisty without an expectation of a round being bought back.
