Must be. I'm living there for all of my life and everytime I'm flying back home from the US, I'm experiencing jet lag. There's no jet lag the other way. I remember flying to NYC once, after arriving there in the early afternoon, we drove (well, kinda drove, it was more like walking speed) to Coney Island spent the evening there, drove to a place outside of the city to our motel - it was already the next morning back home - and then we went to bed, got up at a nice time the next morning and went on, feeling great. ;-) Only valid conclusion: It's Frankfurt's fault. :-) BTW: 500,000 people living here was wrong when the video was uploaded and is even more wrong today. It was like 680,000 at that time, and is well beyond 700,000 now. Still nothing compared to NYC, but if you add the numbers for all the surrounding cities that are legally independet but still form something that looks like a single city, it's way more. From where I live, I just drive down the road for 5 minutes and suddenly, without a larger gap between the buildings, I am in Offenbach. A city with 124,000 people living there. Legally it's not frankfurt, but all you notice is a sign on the side of the road and a different color scheme of the busses there. You are totally right about what you see when leaving the train station - but officials are looking for ways to improve the situation. It's not that we like to have it that way. ;-)

My wife is from Frankfurt, my Inlaws live 20 minutes outside of the city in a town called Bad Soden, which does have a lot of old architecture that was not destroyed in WW2. Germany is a lovely place, well worth the money and time.

Mainnhattan, Frankfurt, Krankfurt, Bankfurt...There are far more obscene variations as the locals would say. This town holds a place in my heart. I was in The USAF stationed at Rhein Main AFB. This is where I learned it. This is where I lived it. Frankfurt is a wonderful blend of old and new Germany. Glass and Steel on one end. A beautiful old German village in the other. Probably Germany's busiest city and is often overlooked as a travelers destination. You summed up Frankfurt nicely. I would also say you can take the S bahn train from the central station and be in Weisbaden within a 1/2 hour. It is a nice diversion.

I visited here 14 years ago, I love Frankfurt! My friend and I found a mom and pop hostile style, but with private rooms. It was nice! They had continental breakfast, and now there is Airbnb and some really good deals. So, usually with cost I go with a place that has breakfast and keep travel simple and enjoy your visit. Another big factor when choosing a place to stay is security and access to a train stop in Frankfurt. I had a terrific time. Eltville, DE is very nice and part of the main Frankfurt suburbs.

Nope, Eltville (at the Rhine river) isn’t a suburb of Frankfurt as otherwise it would have been named correctly "Frankfurt-Eltville". But that isn’t the case. Frankfurt is a city of lot of contrasts. My first visit was in Nov-76 and thereafter, I visited this City multiple times.and my last visit was in 1999. It is a city with multiple Cultures,Languages,Commercial and truly Professional in all the fields. In 1976 the Main station was getting renovated, but the customers were not disturbed. Passengers were moving freely guided by the Station Staff. Indian food was easily available in Indian restaurant stalls within the Station.

Lived outside of Frankfurt from 81-98 in Landkreise Darmstadt, and worked in Frankfurt till 94, when the US Army left. I then worked in a German company in Darmstadt till I moved back to the USA. The Hauptbahnhof in Frankfurt is not much different from and other city in Germany. The area was also famous for the camera shops, as a photographer nerd it was the area to visit and buy photo gear. I worked at the I.G Farben complex, was one area that was not bombed flat in WWII. Did not find it more expensive than any other area while visiting. The last trips were through airline vacation packages, and the town was the stay point and travel spanned out via trains on day trips. Looking forward to the next trip to visit family and friends.

I went to the city centre during a 4 hour layover, loved the skyscrapers! Less than 15 minutes on the S-Bahn from the airport (S8 or S9) and Hauptwache is just brilliant, although the two old buildings that are still there look very out of place!

About jetlag, you experience this wherever you travel long distances and not only to Frankfurt, so I don‘t know if it should really be in the list specific to travelling to Frankfurt. Otherwise the points mentioned were valid. What I like about Frankfurt is really how international it is (you’ll hear many different languages spoken when going around Frankfurt especially when riding the S- and U-Bahns) and how the old and the new architecture mix. Plus Frankfurt has a lot of history.

A bit of exageration here - the main station and the surounding area isn't half as bad as suggested, there's no voilence and security guards are always present - but one must watch out for pickpockets. Also, hotels are not generally expensive and there's a price category available for everyone (check Trip Advisor). Amusing is the photo of the "Römer" with its oldy-worldy medieval buildings (at 6 mins. 42). These are generally surrounded by large groups of Chinese, Japanese and other single tourists, everybody taking photos of course. Only thing is, is that these were all built about 1980, only 35 years ago and based on original plans, drawings and photos made before the originals were destroyed in WW2.

There are junkies, bums and beggars, and it smells of urine in many corners and yeah there is also the red light district. So it may shock some. I am from Frankfurt and I don't like it there too much.

The biggest complaint I have about Frankfurt is figuring out the train system from the airport to the main station into Frankfurt. The kiosks are not user friendly, and the signs are, naturally, in German, but the translations even in English are not user friendly, and when you're standing there trying to buy tickets with multiple bags and catching the train, it's very intimidating, and not at all pleasant. We took a cab back to the airport when we flew out to Greece, because it was just easier than trying to get through the train station back to the airport. There was also construction going on inside the station, and that, along with the crowds made it that much harder.

But most of the time you fly cheaper with other airlines than with ryan air, remember you have to pay an additional fee for you luggage AND Frankfurt-Hahn is almost 130 KM away fron Frankfurt (The only thing they have named it Frankfurt-Hahn is that it´s part of the same company.

Hate #4 - "Shadiest place in town" - as of the end of June 2022 remains true. Our hotel is swell, but in the middle of that area near the HBH. Have to walk fast, with purpose and with head on a swivel for a couple blocks before we can relax a little. Loves - Romerberg is great, but basically a Platze. Was thinking it would be a bit larger than it was. Did like the neighborhood across the river, ended up in one of the Apfelwein taverns, good hearty lunch and some apfelwein to cool down (was 87F out), hit the spot for two for only like 22E.

I agree about the skyscrapers. The very centre of the city is dominantly concrete, glass and steel. If I would visit Frankfurt as a tourist, I would gert out of the city centre as soon as possible. The best parts of the city are around the centre much like a donut. Nothing to see or feel in the centre. I disagree about the people near the main railway station. This phenomena is global. Every big city has their share of narcotics and whatnot. I have never had any problems with them. I have been working in Frankfurt for 3 years and during that time I learned a few things about this wonderful city. The prices of hotel night vary a lot. During the high season, when everything is booked, the prices are sky-high. This happens when there is some big exhibition going on. On other times the prices are much more affordable. The best day to visit Frankfurt is saturday. Then You have the flea market, producers market and other really interesting stuff going on. Normal weekdays are just normal weekdays and sunday is totally dead. Bicycle is the best method for transportation in Frankfurt. Next comes the communal traffic. Please, pay Your ticket, traveling without a ticket and getting controlled is not a joke. Just buy a day-ticket and enjoy. I would buy that already at the airport. I can tell that You made Your video near Zeil. That is one of the most expensive districts for a tourist. It is cheaper everywhere else, including the city centre. Places I would recommend: - Leipzigerstrasse - Konstablerwache Bauermarkt (saturdays) - Bockenheimer Warte Bauermarkt (wednesdays) - Lindleystrasse or Mainkai. The place of flea market alters weekly between these two - If You are fit enough, cycling to Bad Vilbel (and back) is worth the sweat - Senckenberg museum - Palmgarten ... and so on :)

you cant compare Frankfurts crime rate to other citys.. Frankfurt has only 723.000 citizen... all the crimes happen in Frankfurt are only splitt through the number of citizen... ignoring the fact that Frankfurt has the highest commuter rate in Germany... everyday 300.000people rush into the city for work, about 1.5 to 2million Tourist and visitor of the fair (Frankfurt has the secondlargest fairground in the world!!) and 60million passengers at the Frankfurt Main Airport doing criminal acts too and all is added to the crime rate which is at the end only splitt through 723.000 .. a other fact is because of the airport and transport there is a huge need for security so there are many controlls which means many criminal acts are deteced ... in the calssic criminal fields like murder, rape, assault, robbery Frankfurt is only in the middlefield of the statistics... because of this wrong statistic setup Frankfurt was many years on top of the crime rate in Germany for citys with more than 200.000 citizen ... ignoring the commuter factor, the biggest german airport factor, ignoring the huge transit hub factor, ignoring the tourist/ visitor of the fair factor ... in a realtivly small number of citizen city... Frankfurt is the only German city with Alpha Status

The part about the train is 100% correct. I just made a vlog on Frankfurt (🎥in my channel) and had to hide my camera once I exited the train. Suuuper sketch there. Also it is super small. I covered almost the whole city in a layover.

I know I'm late to this but I currently live in Frankfurt and lived here many years before. Frankfurt is the leading Global city in Germany as the 5th largest city (approx 750,000) and 2nd largest metro in Germany behind the Rhein-Rhur area (Cologne, Dusseldorf, Dortmund, Essen area), which makes it very unique. The red light district is right outside the main train station but if you go north of the train station and not across the street, then you will find one of the largest trade fairs in the world.

One job offered to fly my family over and put us in a furnished apartment for 3 months while I looked for a place. I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not taking that one but my kids come first and I have to make sure they can get into an international school for English.

You can’t expect Frankfurt is like Bavaria. These are 2 whole different parts of Germany. (I’m from Frankfurt.) These Beers and Dirndls are only in Bavaria and BAVARIA IS JUST 1 OF 16 PARTS IN GERMANY ! There are 16 Parts called “Bundesländer” and the other 15 parts are “normal” . I don’t understand why everyone expects Bavaria in Frankfurt ???

It's sorta sad that you've maligned the 'Bahnhofsviertel' so much. Yes, there are places near the main train station that are seedy, but there's such an eclectic mix of restaurants and unusual shops that you'd be missing out if you didn't take a closer look. And you left out Bornheim, which is the largest alternative shopping area in Frankfurt apart from the Zeil.

Half timbered houses? - > Roemerberg and the old centres of the villages that now together form the city of Frankfurt. :-) But I wouldn't call Bavaria fairytale land... it may be just as much or as little fairytale land as other places. As in all other destinations, tourists mainly stay on the typical tourist trails and see all those touristy places that they know from Germany clichés. LOL. My advice anywhere...break off the tourist trail and go to discover beyond. And as for fairytales: the Grimm brothers who wrote many fairytales actually come from the nearby city of Hanau. People always imagine Bavarian lederhosen and Oktoberfest when they think of Germany. But that's only the southern part of Bavaria. :-) And yes so called "Frankfurt"-Hahn is far out, it is nowhere close to Frankfurt. The name is exaggerated to get a slice of prestige from the city. Only cheap airlines go there. Frankfurt Intl. is better and has great transport connections (motorway, trains and flights of course.)

the actual city is pretty big. but because you have only been in the part with high buildings, big houses and culture you think the city is really small. for example: the industrial part of the city is as big as my city

You talk like Frankfurt is the only European city with skyscrapers ... quite the contrary - you also get a great skyline of skyscrapers in London, Paris, Milan, Rotterdam, Warsaw, Madrid, etc. and in Germany, you'll also get a couple of skyscrapers here and there in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Essen, etc. but not as prominent

Hey, Im Tao and I live in the near by Frankfurt. But if u mean that Frankfurt is a small city u dont see the whole city.If u want to go shopping u can go to MyZeil or Nordwestzentrum. This r large shopping centre where u can spendt much time. Sry for my gramma :)

Sick of urban Frankfurt? Take the S-Bahn to Bad Homburg (www.rmv.de/auskunft/bin/jp/query.exe/en). Then, at the station, take a bus to the Saalburg(look up station "Bad Homburg v.d.H. Saalburg" as "To:"). You've got a genuine Roman fort (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saalburg) - the restaurant serves roman meals. Take a hike througn the forests, about 45 minutes, and you're at Hessenpark (www.hessenpark.de/en/). Check out the buses back to Frankfurt early, because after 7 p.m. you could be stranded I think. Boom. Your romantic, rural, half timbered german delight (and no Lederhosen). Welcome to Hessen.

The city has been doing lots of mistakes and are still: 1. They should have fused into a big metropolis like Koln, Berlin, Munchen 2. They should shut down Hahn airport to make F/M airport bigger 3. They should extend the U-bahn and automate the lines

+rohit tambday German universities in general are pretty cheap compared to the US or the UK. I would look for cities you might be interested in living and see what is available

Hi Mark, We will be visiting Europe for the very first time via a Viking River cruise that starts in Frankfurt. Well, he isn’t really pointing out that he arrives from the wrong direction (means far west from Frankfurt) and therefore his stupid body isn’t able to handle the existing time zone system. Would love to hear if he blames Paris and London for exactly the same reason?!
