The Don'ts of Ouro Preto, Brazil

I was in Ouro Preto recently (June, 2024). It's beautiful. Even though there were a lot of tourists, almost all of them were Brazilian. I felt like the only foreigner. One piece of advice. I stayed at an Airbnb that was outside the Centro (downtown area). That was a mistake. Ouro Preto doesn't have Uber but there is a local ride App. However, I almost always has long waits for a driver. Stay in the downtown area. It will save you a lot of hassle.

As a matter of curiosity: - More than half of the gold extracted in the world in the 18th century came from this region.. - The famous "pirate doubloons" are the 10,000 and 20,000 réis coins from the governments of D. João V and D. José I, and most of them were minted in this city. Others were minted in Lisbon, Braga, Recife, São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro (present-day Rio de Janeiro) and Salvador. But the largest number of them were minted in Ouro Preto.

Good to Know! My wife's best friend is from Minas Geras. My tiny village doesn't appear on maps, but we are 1,680 miles north if we use Jericoacoara (JJD) and fly to Bela Horizonte and then take the bus to Ouro Preto. When she comes to visit us from the USA, we may try it. 😏

Ouro Preto is beautiful! Just beware of the cobblestones on a rainy day. The restaurants are amazing too but very expensive

Minas Gerais has a lot of beautiful historic cities. I highly recommend Tiradentes, Mariana, São João Del Rei, Diamantina, Serro, Congonhas and much more. Have a good trip guys.

As a Brazilian, kidnapping is definitely not an issue here… We are not the best on safety, but kidnapping is not usual at all. Maybe there is too much American propaganda out there Mike.
