I am wondering what it's like if you are someone who regularly gets household goods ordered and shipped to kind of remote regions in your state. Does this come out to be a hassle if you don't necessarily get goods at grocery stores either?

I lived in Sioux City, IA for many years….right on the border of SD and Nebraska on the Missouri River. As soon as you crossed the Big Sioux River at Sioux City, you were in South Dakota…..and there’s a “Wall Drug” sign right away. LOL Only 434 miles! South Dakota is a wonderful, free state, where people are genuinely friendly. My wife is from Aberdeen. While driving in the wintertime from her parents home to Sioux City, my car stopped unexpectedly in the middle of nowhere. Within ten minutes, no fewer than five cars stopped to offer assistance. The last vehicle was a pickup with log chain, who pulled my car three miles into the village of Bradley, SD ( birthplace of the late Senator Hubert Humphrey) where a mechanic at a local gas station repaired my clutch, and then REFUSED payment because it only took him about minute to diagnose and another five minutes to fix the problem. I love South Dakota.

There have been signs in India, Africa, Vietnam and even the South Pole. I’d say the most fun part of our state is the black hills, ( rapid city, sturgis, deadwood, wall drug, keystone. ) we have tons of small mining-now turned ghost towns. Of course there’s also Mount Rushmore and crazy bourse monuments as well. Tons of caves to explore. South Dakota is also home to the beautiful fairburn agates (our state gemstone) most people are friendly here, our state had very low crime rates, cost of living is rather reasonable. What’s not to love? And some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets you’ll ever see.

As a kid in Michigan, I was fascinated with the West, So was delighted when my folks decided to take us kids on a vacation road trip to Yellowstone in the summer of 1955! The very first time I saw the authentic 'West' was visiting South Dakota on the way. That was definitely a highlight of my youth, and I remember with pleasure seeing the beauty of the Badlands, the grandeur of Mount Rushmore, the impressive Corn Palace & Wall Drug Store, let alone the gorgeous landscape like I'd never seen before! Since then, I've visited a dozen countries, lived in Europe, been all over the 'Lower 48', lived in 5 states, and have been a California resident (mostly) since the '60's; yet SD remains special in my memories!

I currently live in South Dakota, west river. There is some wonderful history and geology out here. Wonderful landscapes, a lot of really great places for hiking and photography. There are also lots of little museums all over the place so be sure to check those out. Including fossil sites! South Dakota has some rich paleontological history including mammoths, T. rex(don't talk about SUE. Just trust me on this), Triceratops, and marine reptiles from the Western Interior Seaway that covered a fair amount of the state back at the end of the Mesozoic. And there is a lot of history in Deadwood especially and they really love their history. I haven't been up to Deadwood much personally but from when I have been, it is a beautiful town with a rich history. They love their historical outlaws. Also, support local businesses including native American businesses. They make some really great stuff and have a lot of really interesting history and culture as well.

Fun fact: Spearfish canyon holds a world record for fastest temperature change. In January 1943, the temperature went from -4 degrees F to 45 degrees F in two minutes. It had something to do with a strong wind I think.

I have lived in several states now and now I’m in a more remote part of South Dakota and it has to be one of my favorite states, I love the land, the people, and the history. The only down side is the unpredictable and severe weather we get, currently where I’m at the wind is gusting at 60 mph and it has been like that for a day now and will continue to blow for two more days. We also get a lot of hail and wild blizzards.

Thanks for mentioning the delineation of East River/West River. I'm about to tell you something you will never forget. The 100th meridian bisects the state of South Dakota as well as bisects the US. This roughly marks the boundary between the semi-arid climate with mountainous terrain in the west and the humid continental climate affected by the humid air from the Gulf of Mexico with the flat plains in the east. This is why you have agricultural lands in eastern South Dakota which make it much like other Midwestern states like Illinois, Iowa and Indiana as you mention in the video. West of that line you'll find more of a ranching economy. It can be quite a stark difference once you drive over the Missouri River. This dividing line of semi-arid/humid climates is not only true for South Dakota but also for the other states divided by this meridian.

I’m a South Dakota native. I’ve lived here all my life except for a 6 1/2 year stint in Texas (I’d live there again if I couldn’t live here...love that state!). Having said that, there’s sooo much stuff he missed...we have some pretty cool museums, Ellsworth Air Force Base ( right next to Rapid City) has a great museum, plus an air show every year...which is fabulous! Spearfish is a very pretty town and home to Black Hills State College. They also have Festival in the Park (Spearfish park is gorgeous!! Great play and picnic area, plus it’s right next to Spearfish Creek, which is a beautiful creek...it’s easily accessible for wading and fishing). Custer State Park has many lakes, lodges and campgrounds that are absolutely beautiful (located in the black hills). And great restaurants. Try the Alpine Inn in Hill City...it’s an interesting place to eat! There’s also the now defunct gold mines that’s worth checking out as far as historical interests go. We have ski slopes close to the Deadwood-Lead area. We have rodeos and tons of other stuff to do! Also lots of snowmobiling... I could go on and on...but I won’t! Give it some thought to vacation here. We love tourists and I think you’ll find a lot of unknown hidden treasures in this beautiful state!! If you decide to move here, welcome, put please leave your liberal voting at home! We’re a great free state because we value our freedoms and fiercely protect them !,

I have lived in the Black Hills my entire life and I'm tellin ya you don't want to miss Custer State Park or Wind Cave National Park. The scenery and wild life are beautiful however please remember that the Bison (you might know them as buffalo) are wild animals. They may look nice and docile but they are very large very fast and can be very dangerous. We want all of our visitors to have a great time here but getting gored or trampled by a 2000 pound animal isn't most people's idea of fun. Also please remember Bison can run about 35 mph so don't think you can approach them and just run away if they get mad, they will catch you. I wish I didn't have to say this stuff but people do get hurt or even killed far to often because they treat the wild life like animals at a petting zoo.

The weather in the Black Hills is very volatile. It can be in the 50s daytime high in July, or hot as hell. Storms are unpredictable, but July and August are usually more stable with drier weather. A few years ago, we encountered 2 inches of pea sized hail that completely covered the roads in areas in the middle of the summer. It looked like smoking snow from the sublimation. Another tip, get that LDW insurance from the car rental place. Whether it's the hail or the deer, chances are good something will get the car.
